In March, Sherlock co-creator Stephen Moffat announced that a festive special episode, to air later this year, would be set more than a century ago.

Now another official image of Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock, and his sidekick Watson, played by Martin Freeman, in Victorian costume has been released by the BBC.

The photograph, which doesn’t give away any information about setting or background, arrives ahead of today’s Sherlock panel at Comic-Con in San Diego, when Moffat and producer Sue Vertue will be joined by Rupert Graves, who plays Sherlock’s colleague DI Lestrade to discuss the show.

So far, little information about the one-off episode has been given, aside from Moffat hinting that the Victorian setting was a result of it being a “separate entity on its own”.

He told Entertainment Weekly, “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. We could hardly conceal it’s Victorian. Mark Gatiss [co-creator] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”
