Enrique Iglesias tops Billboard’s greatest of all time latin artists chart

Enrique Iglesias crowns Billboard‘s first-ever Greatest of All Time Latin Artists chart. The Latin pop superstar will officially be honored for the achievement at the 2020 Billboard Latin Music Awards on Wednesday night, Oct. 21.

Billboard‘s Greatest of All Time Latin Artists chart is based on a formula blending all titles tallied on both the weekly Hot Latin Songs chart (from its inception on Oct. 4, 1986) and the Top Latin Albums tally (from its start on July 10, 1993) through the charts dated Oct. 10, 2020. (Due to changes in chart methodology and title turnover rates, certain periods for each chart recap were weighted differently to ensure as equal a representation as possible among all eras.)

Iglesias has forged a record-breaking career on the Billboard charts since his first entry, “Si Tú Te Vas,” entered Hot Latin Songs just over 25 years ago, on the chart dated Oct. 14, 1995. The single went on to top Hot Latin Songs for eight weeks, becoming his first of a record 27 No. 1s. He has spent a chart-record 189 total weeks at the Hot Latin Songs summit, among his 27 leaders.

Iglesias has charted 43 total entries on Hot Latin Songs, 39 of which have hit the top 10, placing him in a tie with Luis Miguel for the most top 10s. Iglesias has spent 620 collective weeks in the top 10, the most of any act.

Reflecting his longevity, Iglesias’ biggest Hot Latin Songs hit arrived in 2014, when “Bailando,” featuring Descemer Bueno and Gente de Zona, began a then-record 41-week reign. Iglesias followed that smash with two more long-running No. 1s: “El Perdon,” with Nicky Jam (30 weeks, 2015), and “Duele El Corazon,” featuring Wisin (14 weeks, 2016).

As four other of his Hot Latin Songs No. 1s have reigned for double-digit weeks, Iglesias is the only artist with as many as seven songs that have ruled the chart for at least 10 weeks each.

On the Top Latin Albums chart, Iglesias has planted eight flags at No. 1, from his eponymous 1995 debut through 2014’s Sex and Love. The latter became his longest-leading No. 1 (16 weeks) and his longest-charting title overall, spending over 200 weeks on the ranking.

Joining Iglesias in the top five spots on Billboard‘s Greatest of All Time Latin Artists chart are acts ranging from Latin pop to regional Mexican stars. Luis Miguel ranks at No. 2, fueled by 16 Hot Latin Songs No. 1s and nine Top Latin Albums leaders, followed by late legend Selena (No. 3); Marco Antonio Solís (No. 4), who boasts a record 12 Top Latin Albums No. 1s; and iconic genre veteran Vicente Fernández (No. 5).

The 2020 Billboard Latin Music Awards will broadcast live on Telemundo on Wednesday night, Oct. 21, from the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla.
