W<\/a>illem Dafoe\u00a0refused to open up\u00a0during an interview\u00a0with IndieWire in May about his experience working on \u201cAquaman\u201d (IndieWire\u2019s Eric Kohn wrote that Dafoe\u2019s eyes \u201ccurled into slits and darkened\u201d when asked about the superhero film), but he got a bit more honest on the topic at a\u00a0recent 92Y interview\u00a0while promoting \u201cThe Lighthouse.\u201d Dafoe became an especially recognizable face in Hollywood after starring as Green Goblin in Sam Raimi\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man,\u201d but the actor says making that film was more similar to indies than what has become the norm of giant comic book productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Spider-Man\u2019 was great fun because Sam Raimi made that like it was a little independent film,\u201d Dafoe said. \u201cAnd also that was before a lot of the technology was in place, and comic book movies were fairly new, so it was exciting. There was nothing by the numbers, they didn\u2019t roll in the experts. Now it\u2019s become, the industry outgrew itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time Dafoe was starring in \u201cAquaman,\u201d the business of filming comic book movies had changed largely for the worse. \u201cYou have fun with some of the things that you get to do, because there\u2019s lots of hardware and there\u2019s lots of crazy crane shots and those kind of things. That\u2019s fun. But stuff is overshot,\u201d the actor said. \u201cThey spend a lot of money on big set pieces, because that\u2019s what delivers the action, and I find them too long and too noisy. But let\u2019s not get into this. I don\u2019t want to bite the hand that feeds me. But, no, seriously, folks. Look, those aren\u2019t the movies I run to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dafoe continued by suggesting his larger issue with comic book movies is that they are content with staying the same. The financial success of superhero films makes it rare for one to shake things up creatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I worry about is, those big movies, they need something to feed them,\u201d Dafoe said. \u201cThey need a surge, and they need people pushing the boundaries so they can go forward. Because they\u2019re not in the business of going forward, really. They\u2019re in the business of business, and you can make beautiful things because they have a lot of resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cAquaman\u201d sequel already has a\u00a0December 16, 2022 theatrical release set from Warner Bros. Dafoe is likely to return as mentor figure Vulko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
