In the premiere episode of Ryan Murphy\u2019s\u00a0\u201cHollywood,\u201d\u00a0an aspiring actor named Roy Fitzgerald\u00a0(played by Jake Picking)\u00a0visits a gas station-turned-brothel called the Golden Tip in search of male companionship. Attempting to meet other gay men elsewhere, he explains to viewers, is to risk being outed and thus blacklisted by the studio system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of the next six episodes,\u00a0Fitzgerald changes his name to Rock Hudson<\/a> and lands a debut part in a movie \u2015 all while being verbally and sexually abused by a Svengali-like manager, Henry Willson (Jim Parsons<\/a>). By the season finale, Hudson finds the courage to denounce Willson\u2019s exploits,\u00a0go public about his sexuality and attend the 1947 Academy Awards on the arm of a screenwriter boyfriend, Archie Coleman (Jeremy Pope<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHollywood,\u201d which debuted on Netflix last week,\u00a0presents an alternate history of cinema\u2019s golden age. The limited series follows an ensemble of artists and industry moguls, including a director (Darren Criss) and the wife of a studio executive\u00a0(Patti LuPone), pushing for on-screen diversity. Along the way, the film also reimagines the career trajectories of several legendary stars, including Hudson, Anna May Wong<\/a> and Hattie McDaniel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe show really comments on the abuse of power,\u201d Picking told HuffPost.\u00a0\u201cI think that\u2019s always going to be relevant, not just within the entertainment industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real-life Hudson, Wong and McDaniel experienced homophobia, racism and sexism as they fought to make a name for themselves in the arts. \u201cHollywood\u201d suggests their authentic lives might have been received differently if such barriers, which are still facing marginalized groups today, had been shattered some 70-plus years ago through cultural milestones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in reality, Hudson\u2019s talents were, at first, dubious at best<\/a> \u2015 which \u201cHollywood\u201d alludes to by showing him fumble his way through a screen test. The \u201ccasting couch<\/a>\u201d misconduct he endured from Willson, who would remain his agent until 1966, is also well-documented<\/a>. By the late 1950s, however, Hudson was one of Hollywood\u2019s most bankable leading men, starring in films such as \u201cMagnificent Obsession\u201d and \u201cGiant,\u201d for which he scored an Oscar nomination<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Illinois native\u2019s sexuality was said to be an open secret \u2015 so much so that Willson hastily arranged<\/a> for him to marry a talent agency secretary, Phyllis Gates<\/a>, in 1955 to ward off media speculation about his private life. The couple divorced three years later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hudson continued to act regularly through the 1970s and \u201980s, and he never actually addressed his sexuality publicly \u2014 unlike in the show. He died<\/a> in 1985 at age 59 of an AIDS-related illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His wrists were slapped, his hips were straightened, his teeth were fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo judge anyone in that way is just toxic and close-minded,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An admirer of Hollywood greats like James Dean and Marlon Brando, Picking prepared to play Hudson by reading Mark Griffin\u2019s biography of the actor, \u201cAll That Heaven Allows<\/a>,\u201d as well as \u201cThe Man Who Invented Rock Hudson: The Pretty Boys and Dirty Deals of Henry Willson<\/a>,\u201d to get a better grasp of the role the real-life Willson played. He also watched many of Hudson\u2019s films on silent to be able to effectively mimic the actor\u2019s body language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picking, who relocated to Los Angeles from the East Coast before his first on-screen role in 2013\u2019s \u201cThe Way, Way Back<\/a>,\u201d said he related to \u201cthe feeling of loneliness\u201d Hudson experienced during his early years in Hollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was an airplane mechanic in World War II and came here and was driving a packing truck of frozen peas and carrots and, you know, hoping to bump into someone influential,\u201d Picking said. \u201cI definitely could relate to that, coming from the East Coast. I usually associate seasonal changes with what\u2019s going on. So when I moved here, I had existential angst because every day felt the same.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHollywood\u201d looks poised to be a breakout moment for Picking, who previously had supporting roles in \u201cDirty Grandpa<\/a>\u201d and \u201cBlockers<\/a>.\u201d He\u2019ll hit the big screen later this year in\u00a0\u201cTop Gun: Maverick,\u201d alongside Tom Cruise<\/a>.

The intentional revisionism presented in \u201cHollywood\u201d has, thus far, largely<\/a> divided<\/a> critics<\/a>. For his part, Picking said the show\u2019s melding of fact and fiction conveys a hopeful message of \u201ctriumph\u201d and \u201cempathy,\u201d which he\u2019d like to carry forth into a second season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe thing to take away is that you can be who you are and be proud of that,\u201d he said. \u201cMy hope is that Rock would root for that sentiment.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
