Real artworks (or, at least, copies of them) have lined the sets since day one, filling both the sleek headquarters of Axe Capital to the billionaire\u2019s chilly downtown loft.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the first half of the new season puts art at the very center of the turbulent plot and brings a number of different artists to the screen. (The show paused filming midseason because of the public-health situation.) We spoke to&nbsp;<em>Billions<\/em>\u2018s production designer and art director&nbsp;James Gloster about enlisting some very famous figures, making his own onscreen artistic debut, and that whole freeport subplot.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Celebrity-Artist Cameos\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-07-at-5.58.34-PM.png\" alt=\"Painting by filmmaker David Lynch fill Axe Capital headquarters in Season Five of Billions.\" class=\"wp-image-1895926\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paintings by filmmaker David Lynch fill Axe Capital headquarters in Season Five of Billions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the show\u2019s first four seasons, set designers worked at a fast clip to bring together reproductions of real works fit for a billionaire\u2019s art-collecting mood board: examples by\u00a0Jean-Michel Basquiat, Pat Steir, Frank Stella, Yves Klein, Robert Motherwell, and Huma Bhabha.\u00a0\u201cWe were looking for artists with name recognition whose works would be in the<em>\u00a0Billions<\/em>\u00a0world,\u201d Gloster said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">All of the paintings and mixed media works at Axe Capital this season are created by David Lynch. It turned over its two recurring locations, the Axe Capital headquarters and Axe\u2019s apartment, to artists up to the task of capturing the relentlessly capitalistic and paranoid mind of Bobby Axelrod: Bob Dylan and David Lynch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe showrunners\u2026 thought it would be a cool idea if Axe had a lot of work by one artist,\u201d Gloster said. It just so happened that the two who fit the bill are also world-renowned creatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-17-at-1.11.56-PM-1024x582.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1895931\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Those looking closely will be able to spot works by Bob Dylan in Axe\u2019s always sort of dark downtown apartment. Courtesy of Showtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Careful viewers can catch glimpses of music legend-turned-painter Dylan\u2019s creations&nbsp;in Axe\u2019s for-whatever-reason-always-dimly-lit penthouse\u2014including what appears&nbsp;<em>Two Sisters<\/em>, a painting named, we assume, after the Dylan song. At the office, David Lynch\u2019s paintings play a more creepy and conspicuous role, filling corridors with the filmmaker\u2019s characteristically unnerving visions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gloster said Lynch was \u201cmore than gracious\u201d about allowing the show to include recreations of the works, which the production team retrofitted with three-dimensional components including light bulbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2020\/07\/Bob_Dylan_Two_Sisters_75657_900.jpg\" alt=\"Bob Dylan, Two Sisters. Courtesy of Halcyon Gallery. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year, the goal was really to get into Axe\u2019s mind,\u201d Gloster said. \u201cHis world is more and more chaotic and his outlook is not as healthy as it might be, so we were looking for art that emphasizes that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&nbsp;An Artist On the Edge of Selling Out<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-20-at-1.52.02-PM-1024x620.png\" alt=\"Nico Tanner at work. Courtesy of Showtime. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This season also cast its very own tortured artist: the tattooed, paint-splattered Nico Tanner (Frank Grillo). Though Tanner\u2019s \u201cImplosion\u201d series was scooped up by competing billionaire Michael Prince in episode three, Axe is animated by the spirit of competition and eventually cajoles Tanner to create a new series for him on commission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it came to set design, Nico Tanner proved troublesome.&nbsp;\u201cWhen you approach an artist and say we want to use your artwork, but we don\u2019t want your name on it, we want a character\u2019s name on it\u2014then it gets a lot trickier,\u201d Gloster explained. (It probably didn\u2019t help that the whole arc was about Tanner selling out.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-17-at-12.52.05-PM-1024x952.png\" alt=\"Courtesy of Showtime.\" class=\"wp-image-1895938\"\/><figcaption> Courtesy of Showtime. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Realizing the traditional approach wouldn\u2019t work, Gloster took matters into his own hands.&nbsp;\u201cI just started creating a bunch of art in Photoshop and presented it to the showrunners without telling them I\u2019d made it. When they asked who the artist was, I jokingly said \u2018Moi Gloster,\u2019 meaning myself. And, lo and behold, they went for it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To create Tanner\u2019s sought-after style, Gloster spent weekends walking around Brooklyn taking pictures of street art and graffiti\u2014which he believed would have inspired the character\u2014and blending those influences into something new. Then the works were fabricated on set.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe got the files printed out in the largest sizes and then I\u2019d again take them to the scenic shop and say, \u2018Okay, I want you guys to do your magic on these!\u2019\u201d Gloster said. \u201cAnd then our artists would go in with paint and add texture\u2026 to make it feel like a real piece of art.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A&nbsp;Freeport Frenzy<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2020\/07\/im-195105.jpg\" alt=\"Will Mishandling of His Art Collection Finally Take Down Bobby Axelrod? This season, Axe has been making use of a freeport\u2014those tax-free havens that house art behind locked doors\u2014to store his trove of masterpieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in a twisty-turny plot that doesn\u2019t quite add up to real-life sense, Axe&nbsp;<em>actually&nbsp;<\/em>filled the storage crates with fakes so that he could enjoy living with the real works while also enjoying a hefty tax break. Chuck Rhoades catches wind of the plan in episode six and orchestrates a US Customs raid on the freeport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to a tip, Axe acts fast to get the fake art out and the real art in (listen, none of this totally makes sense) and the agents (none of whom are art experts) just up and leave.
