Much to his embarrassment,\u00a0Bruce Springsteen<\/a>\u2019s first visit to Europe was\u00a0hyped to the heavens<\/a>\u00a0by Columbia Records. The label were keen to capitalise on the mounting excitement surrounding Springsteen\u2019s third album,\u00a0Born To Run<\/em>, which, by mid-October \u201975, had reached number 3 on the Billboard 200. On October 27, 1975, both Time and Newsweek put the New Jersey-born singer-songwriter on the cover, buying into the idea of Springsteen as \u2018The New Dylan\u2019.<\/p>\n

When the 26-year-old musician arrived in west London for his debut bow at the storied Hammersmith Odeon, he was mortified to see the words \u2018FINALLY LONDON IS READY FOR BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND\u2019 in lights above the entrance to the venue, and set about tearing down posters in the lobby bearing the same words.<\/p>\n

Given the pressure heaped upon his shoulders for his very first show in Europe, it\u2019s unsurprising that Springsteen found his debut London gig something of a slog. Subsequent reviews of the performance suggested that reviewers felt the same. Creem\u2019s Simon Frith dripped sarcasm when he wrote, \u2018This is the future of rock\u2019n\u2019roll??\u2019, while \u00a0NME writer Tony Tyler was similarly unimpressed, writing \u201cLet me state that on Tuesday I didn\u2019t see the Future Of Rock \u2018N\u2019 Roll, or The New Bob Dylan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m told by Springsteen\u2019s own standards, Tuesday\u2019s was a bad gig,\u201d Tyler noted. \u201cBy the standards of the audience it appeared to be a highly \u2013 but not wildly \u2013 successful gig. By my standards it was a so-so gig, rich with unfulfilled potential but in no way a classic.\u201d And Tyler\u2019s verdict on the title track of the young American\u2019s breakthrough album? \u201cNot much cop.\u201d<\/p>\n
