The world of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d is returning to\u00a0HBO\u00a0in the new year with the prequel series \u201cHouse of the Dragon,\u201d and that\u2019s not at all. Just this week,\u00a0news broke<\/a>\u00a0that Steve Conrad has been hired as the writer and executive producer of a second spinoff series titled \u201cDunk & Egg.\u201d There\u2019s also reports that HBO is\u00a0developing<\/a>\u00a0two animated series set in the \u201cThrones\u201d universe. One spinoff that isn\u2019t seeing the light of day is the the first one that HBO announced, the pilot for which was shot and then scrapped. According to former WarnerMedia entertainment chairman\u00a0Bob Greenblatt<\/a>, that single episode cost the network over $30 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey had spent over $30 million on a \u2018Game of Thrones\u2019 prequel pilot that was in production when I got there,\u201d Greenblatt said in the new HBO book \u201cTinderbox\u201d (via\u00a0Insider<\/a>). \u201cAnd when I saw a cut of it in a few months after I arrived, I said to [HBO boss Casey Bloys], \u2018This just doesn\u2019t work and I don\u2019t think it delivers on the promise of the original series.\u2019 And he didn\u2019t disagree, which actually was a relief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo we unfortunately decided to pull the plug on it,\u201d Greenblatt continued. \u201cThere was enormous pressure to get it right and I don\u2019t think that would have worked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The axed \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d spinoff came from writer Jane Goldman (\u201cKingsman: The Secret Service,\u201d \u201cX-Men: First Class\u201d) and director S.J. Clarkson. The cast included Oscar nominee Naomi Watts in a lead role. Specific plot details were never confirmed for the project, but HBO teased the spinoff chronicled \u201cthe world\u2019s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour,\u201d adding, \u201cOnly one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros\u2019 history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend..it\u2019s not the story we think we know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before HBO canceled the project, Watts expressed excitement about stepping into the \u201cThrones\u201d universe. Watts told the Associated Press<\/a>, \u201cIt makes me very excited, yeah, goosebumps all over. It is intimidating. It\u2019s very exciting. And yes, having just come off the last series, where the world was blowing up over it. Everything was \u2018Game of Thrones\u2019 related. All the advertising on TV, every article \u2014 everyone\u2019s jumping on that bandwagon. So, it is scary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watts added at the time, \u201cHopefully those fans come along and get to find something new and interesting in this world as well. I think they won\u2019t be let down. It\u2019s a great team of people they\u2019ve put together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alas, the spinoff was not meant to be. The same is not true for \u201cHouse of the Dragon,\u201d which is created by \u201cColony\u201d showrunner Ryan Condal and Emmy-winning \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d director Miguel Sapochnik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m the one who encouraged Casey to greenlight it to series,\u201d Greenblatt said in the book about the \u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d spinoff. \u201cI said, \u2018Let\u2019s not risk $30 million on a pilot.\u2019 You can\u2019t spend $30 million on a pilot and then not pick it up. So I said, \u2018Let\u2019s not make a pilot. Let\u2019s get a great series that we feel good about, and just make it. Or not.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d will debut on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
