The beleaguered and scandal-plagued Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards on Monday, with Netflix\u2019s \u201cPower of the Dog\u201d and Focus Features\u2019 \u201cBelfast\u201d landing a leading seven nominations. HBO\u2019s \u201cSuccession,\u201d a dynastic drama about a cutthroat media mogul and his family, topped all television shows with five nods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the past, the honors would have been greeted with a stream of statements from filmmakers and stars expressing shock and delight about being recognized by the group. But the HFPA is mired in a controversy over its lack of diversity and shoddy ethical practices that led NBC to cancel the telecast in 2022 and had top studios and stars pledging not to work with the group until it instituted reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier this year, the HFPA came under fire for not having any Black members in its roughly 100-person organization, accepting expensive gifts to sway their votes and other unethical behavior.\u00a0Since then, the HFPA has diversified its ranks, revamped its bylaws, banned gifts, restricted paid travel and started undergoing significant foundational change. In a\u00a0letter obtained by\u00a0Variety\u00a0<\/em>last week<\/a>, the group\u2019s president Helen Hoehne revealed that the 2022 ceremony will be focused on the HFPA\u2019s philanthropic efforts, and she invited celebrities to participate in announcing the nominations, like typical years. However, the 2022\u00a0Golden Globes<\/a>\u00a0will look different than usual years as a cloud still hangs over the HFPA. Hoehne reveals the nominations during a live stream that also featured Snoop Dogg reading out the group\u2019s selections for the best in television and film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In her remarks, Hoehne called 2021 \u201ca year of change and reflection\u201d for the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cFor the past eight months, we have worked tirelessly as an organization to be better,\u201d she added, noting the group has changed its bylaws and added new codes of conduct. \u201cWe also have 21 new members,\u201d Hoehne said. \u201cThe largest and most diverse in our 79-year-old history. Not only have they brought in a fresh perspective, but ideas that will help us continue to evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Globes were once seen as an important bellwether for the Oscars, but it\u2019s unclear how influential they will prove this year. In a sign of their diminished relevance, the Critics Choice Association will announce its nominations just a few hours after the HFPA unveiled its own selections. That kind of pileup would have been unthinkable a few months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Apple\u2019s \u201cTed Lasso\u201d and \u201cThe Morning Show\u201d also fared well at the Globes, earning four nominations apiece. On the film front, \u201cThe Power of the Dog\u201d and \u201cBelfast\u201d will vie for best drama alongside \u201cDune,\u201d \u201cKing Richard\u201d and CODA.\u201d The best comedy or musical race is between \u201cWest Side Story,\u201d \u201cLicorice Pizza,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Look Up,\u201d \u201cCyrano\u201d and \u201cTick, Tick \u2026 Boom!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Netflix had the most film nominations with 17 nods for the likes of \u201cThe Power of the Dog,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Look Up\u201d and \u201cTick, Tick \u2026 Boom!\u201d On the small screening and streaming realm, HBO led
