Paramount is launching its NFT marketplace \/ metaverse \/ annoying marketing stunt that\u00a0fans are already angry about<\/a>\u00a0with Star Trek non-fungible tokens (or NFTs.) The company partnered with Recur to create a platform called Paramount.xyz, which it says will \u201cbring Paramount\u2019s beloved entertainment entities, brands and characters to the metaverse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paramount is aping what\u2019s worked for big NFT projects in the past; the Star Trek NFTs will depict \u201calgorithmically-generated starships\u201d and can be purchased at the low, low price of $250 per pack. Packs, by the way, contain a single ship \u2014 which only has around an 11 percent chance of looking like the Enterprise. You can (but absolutely should not) guarantee that you\u2019ll get a cool ship by buying the \u201cAdmiral pack\u201d instead of the \u201cCaptain pack,\u201d but you can only get those if you\u2019ve shelled out for a Recur pass \u2014 another NFT that costs at least $290.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ships are stored in what Paramount is calling \u201cStar Trek Continuum,\u201d which is what the company describes as \u201can experiential hub that will house this first and all future seasons of Star Trek NFTs.\u201d Those \u201cfuture seasons\u201d will involve collecting crewmates and doing vague, unspecified missions according to Paramount\u2019s roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of what that \u201cmetaverse\u201d or those experiences will actually look like, Paramount\u2019s press release has a lot of words that basically add up to a hand wave: \u201cRecur and Paramount are building a roadmap of in-real-life utility over the course of this multi-year partnership and Continuum holders will get access to exclusive perks, events and content expanding on the utility of the NFTs digitally and in-real-life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t the first time we\u2019ve seen Star Trek NFTs. The brand has been put on the blockchain in the form of\u00a0digital Funko Pops\u00a0and\u00a0licensed offerings on other platforms. And, as my colleagues, Chaim Gartenberg and Adi Robertson pointed out, each time it happens it feels like a bit of a slap in the face to everything that\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0is\u00a0actually<\/em>\u00a0about. (I\u2019m sure it\u2019s just a coincidence that every video essayist describing post-scarcity \u201cluxury automated space communism\u201d uses\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0imagery to describe it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time around, though, Paramount is going all in. It\u2019s pitching Star Trek Continuum as just the beginning of Paramount.xyz, and it threatens… er, promises that it\u2019ll add franchises from Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures next. Yes, that does mean that we could see SpongeBob NFTs next. And yes, I guess that does mean I\u2019ve gotten to the point in adulthood where I get to see my childhood pillaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
