Music is supposed to soothe the savage beast, but it can also get some people riled up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially, when it comes to copyright cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the history of the music industry, there have been incidents of artists accused of ripping off the works of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taylor Swift<\/strong> had been embroiled in such a case since 2017, when songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler sued her over her massive single, \u201cShake It Off.\u201d The duo alleged that Swift\u2019s hit contains similarities to their 2001 song, \u201cPlayas Gon\u2019 Play,\u201d which they wrote wrote for the girl group 3LW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suit was reportedly dismissed on December 12 at the request of attorneys for both sides, though no details of a settlement, if there is one, have been released publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are five other famous copyright cases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led Zeppelin\u2019s \u2018Stairway to Heaven\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2014, a lawsuit was filed by the estate of the late musician Randy California<\/a> against the surviving members of Led Zeppelin and their record label regarding the iconic \u2018Stairway to Heaven\u201d song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The copyright infringement case alleged that the Zeppelin song was taken from the single, \u201cTaurus,\u201d by the 1960s band Spirit, for whom California had served as lead guitarist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the band denied the allegation. The case wove it\u2019s way through the legal system for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld<\/a> a jury verdict that found that \u201cStairway to Heaven\u201d had not been lifted from \u201cTaurus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This legal dispute hung on allegations that \u201cBlurred Lines\u201d was evocative of the late Marvin Gaye\u2019s 1977 single \u201cGot to Give It Up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gaye\u2019s estate accused Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams of copying the \u201cfeel\u201d of the song for their 2013 hit and were initially awarded more than $7 million,<\/a> but that judgment was later reduced to $5.3 million and the pair appealed the verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, Gaye\u2019s family was awarded a final judgment of nearly $5 million<\/a> against Thicke and Williams. Rapper T.I., who also appeared on the song, was found not liable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legendary soul singer had died in 1984 after being shot by his father, Marvin Gay Sr. (the \u201ce\u201d was added to the family last name to create Gaye\u2019s stage name).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanilla Ice\u2019s \u2018Ice Ice Baby\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rapper Vanilla Ice insisted that the intro to his 1989 hit, \u201cIce Ice Baby,\u201d was different enough from David Bowie and Queen\u2019s 1981 song, \u201cUnder Pressure,\u201d as to not have been copied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI sampled it from them, but it\u2019s not the same bass line,\u201d the rapper\u00a0said during an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n
