While Sean Penn’s “green card” comment during the final moments of the Oscars was widely viewed as insensitive and “xenophobic,” Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu thought it was merely a funny joke between long-time friends.<\/p>\n

Right before announcing “Birdman” as the Best Picture winner on Sunday night, the actor brought up the Mexican director’s immigration status.<\/p>\n

“Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?” Penn asked.<\/p>\n

As many prominent voices denounced the remark on Twitter, reporters backstage at the Oscars asked the “Birdman” director what he thought of the comment. Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, who has known Penn for over a decade, backed the actor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found it hilarious,” Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said, according to Variety. \u201cSean and I had that kind of brutal relationship where only true friendship can survive. When I was directing him in ’21 Grams,\u2019 he was always making jokes \u2026 I made a lot of very tough jokes (to him) that I will not tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu’s win, Penn joined the director backstage to pose for pictures.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t find it offensive, I thought it was very funny,\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu added.<\/p>\n

Before beginning his acceptance speech, Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu had referenced the actor’s remark with a joke of his own.<\/p>\n

“Maybe next year, the government will inflict some immigration rules (on) the academy — two Mexicans in a row, that’s suspicious, I guess,” Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1arritu said, in a likely reference to Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n’s win for Best Director last year for “Gravity.”<\/p>\n

The director ended his speech with an inspiring call to action for Mexicans abroad and his hopes for those who live in the United States.<\/p>\n

“I want to dedicate this award for my fellow Mexicans, the ones who live in Mexico,” Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu said. “I pray that we can find and build the government that we deserve. And the ones that live in this country, who are part of the latest generation of immigrants in this country, I just pray that they can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones who came before and built this incredible immigrant nation.”<\/p>\n

Twitter users, however, didn’t seem to share Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu’s understanding of Penn’s joke. Outrage over the comment reached new heights when #Penndejo — a combination of “Penn” and the Spanish word “pendejo,” which means stupid — began trending.<\/p>\n

Some who knew of the actor and director’s friendship were quick to identify the comment as a joke, but many others felt that the remark was ill-timed and without context did nothing more than highlight Hollywood’s lack of diversity at the whitest Oscars since 1998.<\/p>\n

Axel Caballero, Executive Director of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, expressed a similar sentiment on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, it was a big night for I\u00f1\u00e1rritu. The \u201cBirdman\u201d director, not only beat out favorite \u201cBoyhood\u201d for Best Picture but became the second consecutive Latin American to win Best Director.<\/p>\n
