Fans of the ancient Chinese board game cheered when AlphaGo quit after five hours and Lee was greeted by applause from journalists at the post-match news conference at a Seoul hotel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one win is so valuable and I will not trade this for anything in the world,\u201d said Lee, one of the best Go players in the world.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-2 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/61fbcefd19f7b46a81950b78d164299741082d89\/844_1528_3013_1808\/3013.jpg?w=460&amp;q=55&amp;auto=format&amp;usm=12&amp;fit=max&amp;s=7687723ecc98b921df5d2acc7cc53454\" alt=\"\" width=\"621\" height=\"373\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\">\n<h1 class=\"rich-link__title\"><a class=\"rich-link__link\">AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol in third consecutive Go game<\/a><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__arrow\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more-text\">The 33-year-old South Korean Go grandmaster said he believed he had found two weaknesses in the artificial intelligence (AI) program. AlphaGo seemed to have a problem with unexpected moves, indicating the machine lacked the ability to deal with surprises, and appeared to have more problems playing with a black stone, Lee said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>In Go, a game for two, players take turns putting black or white stones on a 19-by-19 grid. The winner is the player who surrounds more territory than his or her opponent. Despite its seeming simplicity, the permutations of Go vastly exceed those in chess.<\/p>\n<p>The first move of a game of chess offers 28 possibilities; the first move of a game of Go can involve placing the stone in one of 361 positions. A game of chess lasts around 80 turns while Go games can last 150.<\/p>\n<p>Lee played with a white stone on Sunday. For the final match of the series, scheduled for Tuesday, Lee has offered to play with black, saying it would make a victory more meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>The DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis said the loss was a valuable learning tool and would help identify weaknesses in the program that needed to be fixed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/3486.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-43770\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43770\" src=\"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/3486.jpg\" alt=\"3486\" width=\"620\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/3486.jpg 620w, https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/3486-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a real testament to Mr Lee\u2019s incredible fighting spirit and he was able to play so brilliantly today after three defeats,\u201d said Hassabis, a 39-year-old Briton who started the AI research firm and who plays master-level chess.<\/p>\n<p>Before the five-game series,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" draggable=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/feb\/22\/google-deepmind-go-alphago\" target=\"_blank\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">Lee exuded confidence<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t think it will be a very close match,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe it will be 5\u20130, or maybe 4\u20131. So the critical point for me will be to not lose one match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Experts did not expect an AI program to beat a human professional for at least a decade, until AlphaGo beat a European champion player last year. Lee, however, was considered a much more formidable opponent.<\/p>\n<p>Google executives say Go offers too many possible moves for a machine to win simply through brute-force calculations, unlike chess, in which IBM\u2019s Deep Blue famously beat former world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997. Instead, they said, AlphaGo was designed to approximate human intuition by studying old matches and using simulated games to hone itself independently.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, Hassabis described Go as \u201ca bit of a holy grail for AI research\u201d, though he <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2016\/mar\/13\/alphago-google-lee-se-dol\" target=\"_blank\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">stressed on Saturday that Lee\u2019s defeat should not be seen as a loss for humanity<\/a>. \u201cOur hope is that in the long run we will be able to use these techniques for many other problems,\u201d Hassabis said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The rise of the machines came to a halt, temporarily at least, when the champion Go player Lee Sedol beat a computer program on Sunday to prevent a whitewash after losing the first three games.
