The concert, part of an annual charity series produced by Michael Dorf, was<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2016\/01\/11\/david-bowie-tribute-concert-carnegie-hall\">in the works<\/a> well before Bowie\u2019s January death, but gained additional notoriety when the <em>New York Times<\/em>coincidentally <a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/10\/david-bowie-to-be-honored-at-carnegie-hall\/\">announced<\/a> its lineup the morning that news of the rock icon\u2019s passing broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to get permission from David Bowie\u2019s camp for many years,\u201d Dorf told the crowd. (Previous honorees include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2015\/03\/24\/david-byrne-receives-stacked-carnegie-hall-tribute\">David Byrne<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2013\/01\/03\/prince-tribute-carnegie-hall\">Prince<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2007\/11\/08\/on-the-scene-bo\">Bob Dylan<\/a>.) And while fans audibly groaned when Dorf confirmed that the Roots <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2016\/03\/31\/roots-kimbra-bowie-tribute-concert\">wouldn\u2019t make an appearance<\/a> \u2014 and that Patti Smith was a late scratch due to sickness \u2014 excitement was palpable when he ceded the stage to Cyndi Lauper for the evening\u2019s first performance.<\/p>\n<p>EW was on the scene: Read on for the gig\u2019s standout moments and a complete setlist below.<\/p>\n<h2>Most Experimental: Gogol Bordello, \u201cBreaking Glass\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>The show began with staid renditions of <em>Ziggy Stardust<\/em>-era tunes, with Lauper delivering \u201cSuffragette City\u201d and British singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock giving a standard \u2014 though still enjoyable \u2014 treatment to \u201cSoul Love.\u201d So it was refreshing when Laurie Anderson brought her electric violin to <em>Low<\/em>\u2019s \u201cAlways Crashing in the Same Car\u201d \u2014 and downright exhilarating when Eugene H\u00fctz and Sergey Ryabtsev of the gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello followed her with a wild version of \u201cBreaking Glass.\u201d Cacophony reigned as H\u00fctz shrieked, \u201cYou\u2019re such a wonderful person \/ But you got problems,\u201d and Ryabtsev shredded an electric violin of his own. They channeled Bowie\u2019s manic late-\u201970s persona so heavily that house band leader and longtime Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti remarked, \u201cThat was crazy \u2014 crazy good.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Most Controversial: Joseph Arthur, \u201cThe Man Who Sold the World\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>The 44-year-old singer-songwriter gave the evening\u2019s first solo performance when he emerged armed with only a loop pedal and his orange Fender Stratocaster, to share a lengthy, distortion-drenched version of 1970\u2019s \u201cThe Man Who Sold the World.\u201d His mysterious take on the song was likely was a curveball for anyone who had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2016\/03\/30\/michael-stipe-bowie-man-who-sold-world\">watched Tuesday\u2019s <em>Tonight Show<\/em><\/a>and expected former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe to sing the tune \u2014 and Arthur\u2019s farewell to the crowd proved more memorable than his performance itself. After playing the final notes, Arthur unveiled an American flag with massive letters scrawled across it spelling \u201cF\u2013K TRUMP,\u201d to massive applause from the audience.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"youtube\" title=\"YouTube\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dI8SpGy-P44\" width=\"612\" height=\"345\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Most Poignant: Michael Stipe &amp; Karen Elson, \u201cAshes to Ashes\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Stipe appeared two songs after Arthur, telling the crowd, \u201cDavid was a hippie before he was a spaceman,\u201d before singing 1980\u2019s Major Tom eulogy \u201cAshes to Ashes.\u201d Joined by surprise guest vocalist Karen Elson and a piano accompanist, Stipe\u2019s aching version of the song accentuated its dark character, while Elson\u2019s impressive pipes added color to a sparse piano arrangement. Given how much \u201cAshes to Ashes\u201d resembles a proto-R.E.M. song \u2014 the seminal group would make their debut three years later \u2014 Stipe\u2019s interpretation was unexpected. It also proved to be the evening\u2019s most hypnotic.<\/p>\n<h2>Most Understated: J Mascis &amp; Sean Lennon, \u201cQuicksand\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Lennon and Dinosaur Jr.\u2019s Mascis brought the unassuming humility of Bowie\u2019s first classic album, 1971\u2019s <em>Hunky Dory<\/em>, to their performance of \u201cQuicksand.\u201d Armed with acoustic guitars \u2014 and with Mascis on the 12-string \u2014 the duo began by riffing on the spooky \u201cAndy Warhol\u201d lick, before jamming into the pensive song about how \u201cknowledge comes with death\u2019s release.\u201d Bowie became known as a consummate showman, but in his trucker hat and jean jacket, Mascis gave a glimpse into an alternate reality where the rocker had stuck to his folk-rock roots.<\/p>\n<h2>Most Confusing: Pixies, \u201cCactus\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Bowie had a lengthy history supporting artists from Iggy Pop to Arcade Fire. In 2002, he covered the Pixies\u2019 1988 tune \u201cCactus\u201d for his album <em>Heathen<\/em>, so, naturally, the iconic alt-rock group made an appearance Thursday. But, given how closely Bowie\u2019s version resembles the original, it was confounding that the band chose to cover Bowie\u2019s cover of them. The result was essentially a one-song Pixies concert at Carnegie Hall: Not a bad thing in its own right, but incongruous with the rest of the evening\u2019s program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BDo-NGRORRK\/embed\/?v=6\" width=\"300\" height=\"568\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Most Spectacular: The Flaming Lips, \u201cLife on Mars?\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>That the Flaming Lips would do something wild at the denouement for the foundational figure of glam-rock was a foregone conclusion. But few could\u2019ve guessed that that would entail frontman Wayne Coyne mounting someone in full Chewbacca garb for a cosmic version of<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ew.com\/article\/2016\/03\/24\/bowie-life-mars-covers\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLife on Mars?\u201d<\/a> Coyne wore a silver wreath around his neck with light-up tendrils that draped to the ground and flashed in unison with the song\u2019s peaks and swells. Sure, the Lips\u2019 cover ruled, but the image of Coyne wailing from atop the famous <em>Star Wars<\/em> character is all many will remember.<\/p>\n<h2>Most Camaraderie: Choir! Choir! Choir! with the New York City Children\u2019s Chorus, \u201cSpace Oddity\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Performers got the Carnegie Hall audience involved throughout Thursday\u2019s program. Heart\u2019s Ann Wilson encouraged fans to dance during \u201cLet\u2019s Dance!\u201d and Rickie Lee Jones cultivated significant participation during her stripped rendition of \u201cAll the Young Dudes.\u201d But every member was standing \u2014 and belting \u2014 when the leaders of Toronto\u2019s drop-in singing group Choir! Choir! Choir! led the New York City Children\u2019s Chorus and performers from the night in a show-closing \u201cSpace Oddity\u201d sing-along. \u201cAre you guys ready to take the leap?\u201d the ensemble\u2019s Nobu Adilman asked. Judging by the response, the crowd was.<\/p>\n<h2>Most Valuable Player: Mick Woodmansey and Tony Visconti (tie)<\/h2>\n<p>The tribute show featured a rotating cast of performers new and old. But two of Bowie\u2019s famed musical allies gave nearly every song a boost as members of the house band: Visconti and original Spiders from Mars drummer Mick Woodmansey.
