BH Tilt\u2019s low-budget horror-thriller \u201cThe Darkness,\u201d starring Kevin Bacon and Radha Mitchell, scared up $5.2 million at 1,754 sites in a Friday the 13th launch aimed at horror fans.<\/p>\n
\u201cCivil War\u201d showed impressive staying power after it launched with $179.1 million last weekend, the fifth-highest of all time. The 59% decrease is in the same range as two other Marvel-Disney tentpoles: last year\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron\u201d and 2013\u2019s \u201cIron Man 3.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCivil War\u201d has taken in $295.9 million at the domestic box office in its first ten days. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with ComScore, said \u201cCivil War\u201d is keeping the box office momentum going for a strong summer season.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018Captain America: Civil War\u2019 continues to benefit from good old-fashioned word-of-mouth, an irresistible concept and its delivery of a flat-out perfect summer popcorn movie experience\u00a0and that has powered the film to close to $300 million after just ten days in North American theaters,\u201d he added. \u201cThe newcomers did as expected considering the overwhelming strength of the latest Marvel extravaganza and both \u2018Money Monster\u2019 and \u2018The Darkness\u2019 performed perfectly in line with expectations and offered something new and different for audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCaptain America: Civil War\u201d will become the 11th title to have exceeded $70 million in its second weekend. That list is headed by \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d with $149 million, \u201cJurassic World\u201d with $106.6 million, \u201cMarvel\u2019s The Avengers\u201d with $103.1 million, \u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron\u201d with $77.7 million, \u201cAvatar\u201d with $75.6 million, \u201cThe Dark Knight\u201d with $75.2 million and \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire\u201d at $74.2 million.<\/p>\n
Sony\u2019s \u201cMoney Monster\u201d was able to provide viable counter-programming aimed at adults, finishing well above recent forecasts. Directed by Jodie Foster, \u201cMonster\u201d generated solid buzz from its world premiere on Thursday night at the Cannes Film Festival and saw a 22% gain in business from Friday to Saturday.<\/p>\n
Rory Bruer, Sony\u2019s worldwide head of distribution, said the launch number was particularly strong in light of the dominance of \u201cCivil War\u201d and noted that there\u2019s currently little competition for the adult audience. \u201cIt bodes very well for us in the coming weeks,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Disney\u2019s fifth weekend of \u201cThe Jungle Book\u201d continued to show remarkable staying power with $17.8 million at 3,970 locations for a second place finish. The comedy-adventure declined a mere 27% from the previous frame and will wind up the weekend with more than $311 million domestically.<\/p>\n
Blumhouse\u2019s \u201cThe Darkness\u201d finished in fourth place and represented an attempt to exploit the horror niche with a modest spend via the High Top Releasing banner. Blumhouse\u2019s BH Tilt\u00a0 indicated that an opening in the $4 million range would make it a successful venture. It used the same strategy last year on \u201cThe Green Inferno,\u201d which wound up grossing $7 million.<\/p>\n
Open Road\u2019s third weekend comedy \u201cMother\u2019s Day\u201d finished fifth as it slid 71% to $3.3 million following the Mother\u2019s Day weekend, lifting the U.S. total to $28.8 million. Disney\u2019s 11th weekend of its sturdy animated comedy \u201cZootopia\u201d followed in sixth with $2.8 million, declining only 12%, to pull the domestic total to $331.8 million.<\/p>\n
Universal\u2019s fourth weekend of \u201cThe Huntsman: Winter\u2019s War\u201d finished seventh as the fantasy actioner decreased by 35% to $2.6 million at 2,518 locations, pushing its U.S. total past $44 million. New Line\u2019s third weekend of \u201cKeanu\u201d followed in eighth with $1.9 million at 2,120 locations for a domestic cume of $18.6 million.<\/p>\n
A24\u2019s quirky comedy \u201cThe Lobster,\u201d starring Colin Farrell, opened impressively with $188,195 on four screens in Los Angeles and New York for a per-theater average of $47,049, which was the highest of the year. \u201cThe Lobster,\u201d which was originally acquired by Alchemy, won the Jury Prize at last year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n
Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions also generated a strong launch for Whit Stillman\u2019s \u201cLove & Friendship,\u201d a Jane Austen adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny, with $132,750 at four sites. Fox Searchlight\u2019s second weekend of \u201cA Bigger Splash\u201d expanded from five to 26 sites and generated a decent $185,000, lifting the total to\u00a0 $367,429.<\/p>\n
