If you\u2019ve ever heard someone yell \u201cKhan!\u201d without context, then you are, at least in some way, familiar with\u00a0\u201cStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides that quote\u2019s continued popularity in the American lexicon, the 1982 movie is notable for earning both box-office success and critical praise upon its release.\u00a0The New York Times<\/a> began their review of the second installment in the \u201cStar Trek\u201d movie series with the words, \u201cNow this is more like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since it became such an established classic, you may be surprised to learn of one,\u00a0then untested, but now famous director who almost helmed the movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the directors I know that I was keen on was a young man who actually came in at Paramount\u2019s suggestion,\u201d \u201cWrath of Khan\u201d producer Robert S. Sallin says in a new video Paramount provided exclusively to HuffPost.<\/p>\n

That \u201cyoung man\u201d was Ron Howard, who went on to become one of Hollywood\u2019s most popular directors, helming movies such as \u201cApollo 13,\u201d \u201cA Beautiful Mind\u201d and \u201cThe Da Vinci Code.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At the time, according to Sallin, many directors passed on the project because they didn\u2019t want to do a \u201cStar Trek\u201d movie or a sequel. But Howard was excited about the prospect of taking on the project.\u00a0\u201cHe loved \u2018Star Trek by the way,\u201d says Sallin. \u201cAnd that counts for a lot.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In addition to Howard\u2019s fandom for the movie, his younger brother, Clint Howard, made acting appearances in the \u201cStar Trek\u201d television series dating back to the \u201860s. This could have been a match made in the starry heavens.<\/p>\n

Sallin even decided Howard was his top choice, but as the producer says in the video, bringing Howard on board didn\u2019t work out. The studio tapped another untested director at the time, Nicholas Meyer, who would end up directing later \u201cStar Trek\u201d projects, as well.<\/p>\n

From the clip, it is unclear who was responsible. \u201cKhan?!\u201d Probably not, but a suspect for sure.<\/p>\n

The exclusive clip is from a new series of interviews available with the Blu-ray debut of the director\u2019s cut for \u201cWrath of Khan.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
