Martin\u2019s books<\/a> are now firmly in the rearview, but there are still plenty of in-show clues about the clashes to come in Season 7. Look into the flames and be warned, spoilers and speculation lie ahead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$1\">\n<p><b>The Mad Queen vs. The Kingslayer<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$2\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/1uGlgof22QVxu\" width=\"480\" height=\"192\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$2\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$2\">\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$3\">\n<p>Newly crowned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/06\/27\/game-of-thrones-season-6-finale-all-hail-cersei-the-baddest-bitch-in-westeros.html\" target=\"_blank\">Queen Cersei<\/a>\u2019s ascendance to the throne is unprecedented in Westeros history: she\u2019s an unmarried woman ruling the Seven Kingdoms, something no Great Council would ever have allowed. The aristocratic bigwigs who would have been on that council are now dead, but that doesn\u2019t mean Cersei will reign unopposed for long.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"tealiumFeatureFlag\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$5\">\n<p>Daenerys is now on her way to Westeros to seize the throne with the full power of an army and three dragons. She\u2019ll likely land first in Dorne, where Olenna Tyrell and the Snakes are also plotting Cersei\u2019s demise. But more tragically, there is one figure in the capital now poised to forcibly end what will likely be the most unhinged period of short-sighted ruthlessness anyone has seen since the Mad King Aerys Targaryen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$6\">\n<p>That\u2019s Jaime, Cersei\u2019s twin and lover, who stabbed the Mad King to death for even<i>planning <\/i>to do what Cersei already did in his absence: detonating the explosive wildfire hidden under the Sept of Baelor. Over the years, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/06\/14\/game-of-thrones-star-nikolaj-coster-waldau-on-jaime-s-purest-love-for-brienne-and-male-nudity.html\" target=\"_blank\">especially through his relationship with Brienne<\/a>, the show has taken care to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/06\/14\/game-of-thrones-star-nikolaj-coster-waldau-on-jaime-s-purest-love-for-brienne-and-male-nudity.html\" target=\"_blank\">establish Jaime<\/a> as a more nuanced character than his Kingslayer nickname let on. He killed Aerys to save the lives of thousands. He owns his Kingslayer nickname with a mixture of self-loathing and regret.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$7\">\n<p>And he\u2019s going to be the one who kills Cersei.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$8\">\n<p>Maggy the witch foretold the major events of Cersei\u2019s life in a prophecy we saw in Season 5\u2019s \u201cThe Wars to Come.\u201d She accurately predicted Cersei\u2019s marriage to a philandering king, the deaths of all her children, and her rise to the throne as queen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$9\">\n<p>She also predicted Cersei\u2019s downfall. \u201cQueen you shall be, until there comes another, younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that you hold dear.\u201d Cersei seemed to think this referred to Margaery, though it may actually be Daenerys. Another line of the prophecy foretold Cersei\u2019s death, though the line was omitted from the show: \u201cAnd when your tears have drowned you, the <i>valonquar <\/i>shall wrap his hands around your pale white throat and choke the life from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$10\">\n<p>\u201cValonquar\u201d means \u201clittle brother\u201d in Valyrian, a word Cersei assumes refers to Tyrion. But Jaime is younger too, if only by minutes. Season 6 took care to remind us that there is \u201cstill honor in\u201d Jaime, as Brienne said. Judging by the disturbed look on his face at the sight of his sister crowned queen, that sense of honor and morality\u2014traits he does not share with his twin\u2014could be Cersei\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teads-wrapper\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$11\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$12\">\n<p><b>Clash of the Puppetmasters<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$13\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/l46CB1XFKhV2nGHIc\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$14\">\n<p>In all the chaos over six years, it\u2019s easy to forget that Petyr Baelish, aka Littlefinger, is the architect of the entire game of thrones. He started the War of the Five Kings by convincing Lysa Arryn to kill her husband Jon, then-Hand of the King, thus sparking the deadly rivalry between the Lannisters and Starks. He arranged for Margaery\u2019s marriage to Joffrey, then planned and executed the Lannister king\u2019s death, Sansa\u2019s escape, and her subsequent marriage to Ramsay. He even orchestrated Cersei\u2019s arrest by the Faith Militant by giving Olenna the information she needed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$15\">\n<p>\u201cThe Winds of Winter\u201d finally told us his endgame: he wants the Iron Throne for himself with Sansa Stark by his side. (Ew.) His newest tactic? Driving a wedge between Sansa and Jon Snow in the North by convincing her that she deserves to rule instead of him. There have already been hints of sibling animosity there: Sansa didn\u2019t trust Jon enough to tell him about the Knights of the Vale in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/06\/20\/game-of-thrones-battle-of-the-bastards-jon-snow-seeks-revenge-on-his-sister-s-rapist.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Battle of the Bastards<\/a>, and she resented being excluded from the war council beforehand.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$16\">\n<p>Happily, Littlefinger isn\u2019t the only one pulling strings and exerting world-changing influence behind the scenes. Varys is just as busy these days, seemingly teleporting between Dorne, where he\u2019s planning a coup against the Lannisters with Olenna and the Snakes, and Meereen, where he\u2019s been helping Daenerys mount the Targaryen restoration<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2015\/04\/varys-targaryen-supporter.html\" target=\"_blank\">he\u2019s been planning all along<\/a>. If Littlefinger\u2019s long con only serves his own ends, Varys\u2019s, at least in his mind, is in service of the kingdom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$17\">\n<p>Their rivalry has been on the back burner for the better part of two seasons but their machinations will rise to the forefront again, especially as their interests physically clash in King\u2019s Landing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$18\">\n<p><b>The Red Witch vs. The Many-Faced Assassin<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$19\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/xT8qBm7bEjQGfBXRS0\" width=\"480\" height=\"233\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$20\">\n<p>With Melisandre banished from the North and Arya hot off her pie-baking debut at the Twins, these two will cross paths again as well. It is known: the last time Melisandre saw Arya, she looked into her face, saw her future as a Many-Faced assassin, and predicted their next meeting: \u201cI see a darkness in you,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. We will meet again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$21\">\n<p>Their reunion will, of course, turn violent. Melisandre is still on Arya\u2019s kill list for wanting to hurt Gendry. Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr from the Brotherhood Without Banners are still on her kill list too, for handing Gendry over to the Red Witch. Maybe Melisandre will join up with the Brotherhood again and that\u2019s where Arya will find her\u2014it\u2019d certainly be a poignant, eventful meeting: Arya\u2019s ex-travel buddy The Hound (also on her kill list) is now traveling with the Brotherhood as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$22\">\n<p><b>Bran Ruins Everything (Again)<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$23\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/3oD3YwXJVuNv6pjXna\" width=\"480\" height=\"269\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$24\">\n<p>Bran didn\u2019t exactly endear himself to us this season, what with him shattering Hodor\u2019s mind, letting the Night King touch him, and thus breaking the seal that protected the Three-Eyed Raven\u2019s tree. With him and that nasty blue mark on his arm heading south to the Wall though, Bran\u2019s biggest fuck-up may still be to come.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$25\">\n<p>As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/05\/30\/game-of-thrones-will-bran-stark-s-new-ally-spill-jon-snow-s-secret.html\" target=\"_blank\">undead Benjen Stark<\/a> reminded us in \u201cWinds of Winter,\u201d the Wall is also protected by ancient spells meant to keep White Walkers out. Bran has no choice but to turn south from the Lands of Always Winter at this point\u2014there\u2019s no safe place left there. If he makes it past the Wall, will the Night King\u2019s touch also break those spells, finally unleashing the horde of White Walkers on Westeros? The sight of thousands of them crawling over the Wall would make a pretty impressive last shot of the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$26\">\n<p><b>Samwell Tarly Helps Save the World<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$27\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/26BRPNXS76ISu21kk\" width=\"480\" height=\"268\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$28\">\n<p>Apart from a few sweet makeover scenes and a nightmare family reunion, Sam\u2019s season six quest south of the Wall to his hometown of Horn Hill then to Oldtown could feel a little inconsequential. But that\u2019s only because the payoff is yet to come: Sam\u2019s <i>Beauty and the Beast <\/i>moment in the Citadel\u2019s staggeringly expansive (and beautiful) library is the first in a series of moments that will be crucial for the survival of mankind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$29\">\n<p>The Citadel is a bastion of ancient knowledge and Sam knows better than most how urgent the threat of White Walkers is. Maybe he\u2019ll discover some ancient spell (like the one on the Wall) that can keep the monsters away. Or maybe he\u2019ll dig out clues to the creation of Valyrian steel, one of only two known substances capable of killing White Walkers. (The other is dragonglass.) He does have his father\u2019s prized Valyrian sword handy\u2014it could be what makes the difference in the experiments to recreate it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$30\">\n<p><b>Jon Snowgaryen Deals With a Prophecy<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper snippet\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$31\"><iframe class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"http:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/l41YpcK5MkNy44BOM\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrapper text\" data-reactid=\".0.2.1.0.$0.4.3.$32\">\n<p>\u201cThe Winds of Winter\u201d finally confirmed the theory that\u2019s been all but canon at this point: R+L=J. Former Crown Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Ned\u2019s sister Lyanna Stark are Snow\u2019s real parents, a fact hidden from him to keep him safe from Targaryen-killing King Robert.
