With a new movie (<em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em>) hitting theaters in July 2016, many fans are wondering exactly how the upcoming series will fit into the framework of the\u00a0Star Trek universe as it exists now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything\u00a0we know about the\u00a0<em>Star Trek<\/em> series so far.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Set phasers to \u2018binge\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>According to series showrunner and co-creator Bryan Fuller (via <a class=\"text-link\" href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/new-star-trek-series-details\/\">Collider<\/a>), the first season of the new\u00a0<em>Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0series will unfold over 13 episodes, telling one complete story over the course of the season instead of a new, self-contained story each episode. The structure lends itself to the increasingly popular\u00a0binge-watching habits of the modern television audience, which makes sense given that the series will air on Netflix and the network\u2019s own streaming, on-demand video service.<\/p>\n<p>One of the only elements confirmed at this point is the show\u2019s ties to Netflix and the CBS All Access streaming service.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-July 2016, it was announced that the series will premiere on the standard CBS television network in January 2017, but subsequent episodes will be available exclusively on CBS All Access (which requires a monthly subscription) for audiences in Canada and the U.S. In addition, the series will be available on\u00a0Netflix for international audiences in 188 other countries. Netflix will reportedly get each episode within 24 hours of its premiere on CBS All Access.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, fans don\u2019t have to wait until January for more Star Trek, as <em>Star Trek Beyond<\/em> hits theaters\u00a0July 22, 2016.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Boldly going \u2026 where, exactly?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At this point, CBS is keeping story details about the new series under wraps, and there\u2019s precious little that\u2019s certain about the franchise\u2019s\u00a0return to the small screen. However, the teaser does promise \u201cnew crews,\u201d \u201cnew villains,\u201d \u201cnew heroes,\u201d and \u201cnew worlds\u201d \u2014 suggesting that we\u2019ll see something that unfolds within the canon of the established Star Trek universe, but not directly tied to the events in the movies.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing has been confirmed at this point about the chronological setting for the series, but rumors have suggested that the series will be an anthology project of some sort, akin to\u00a0<em>American Horror Story<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Fargo<\/em>, with each season set in a different point in the Star Trek timeline and featuring different characters\u00a0and cast members.
