She was 86.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-1\">\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"325\" data-total-count=\"595\">Classically trained, Ms. Nixon was throughout the 1950s and \u201960s the unseen \u2014 and usually uncredited \u2014 singing voice of the stars in a spate of celebrated Hollywood films. She dubbed Deborah Kerr in \u201cThe King and I,\u201d Natalie Wood in \u201cWest Side Story\u201d and Audrey Hepburn in \u201cMy Fair Lady,\u201d among many others.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"260\" data-total-count=\"855\">Her other covert outings included singing for Jeanne Crain in \u201cCheaper by the Dozen,\u201d Janet Leigh in \u201cPepe\u201d and Ida Lupino in \u201cJennifer.\u201d \u201cThe ghostess with the mostest,\u201d the newspapers called her, a description that eventually began to rankle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"338\" data-total-count=\"1193\">Before her Hollywood days and long afterward, Ms. Nixon was an acclaimed concert singer, a specialist in contemporary music who appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic; a recitalist at Carnegie, Alice Tully and Town Halls in New York; and a featured singer on one of Leonard Bernstein\u2019s <a title=\"televised young people\u2019s concerts\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TgK7H2AuDB0\" target=\"_blank\">televised young people\u2019s concerts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"349\" data-total-count=\"1542\">Her concerts and her many recordings \u2014 including works by Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Webern, Ives, Copland, Gershwin and Kern \u2014 drew wide critical praise. Yet as late as 1990, decades after Ms. Nixon had made good on her vow to perform only as herself, she remained, in the words of The Los Angeles Times, \u201cthe best known of the ghost singers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"408\" data-total-count=\"1950\">At midcentury, Hollywood was more inclined to cast bankable stars than trained singers in films that called for singing. As a result, generations of Americans have grown accustomed to Ms. Nixon\u2019s voice, if not her face, in standards like \u201c<a title=\"Getting to Know You\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vlx6gQWfjp0\" target=\"_blank\">Getting to Know You<\/a>,\u201d from \u201cThe King and I\u201d; \u201c<a title=\"I Feel Pretty\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RgHtBxOs4qw\" target=\"_blank\">I Feel Pretty<\/a>,\u201d from \u201cWest Side Story\u201d; and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6Ve1FrNqvlk\" target=\"_blank\">I Could Have Danced All Night<\/a>,\u201d from \u201cMy Fair Lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\">Deborah Kerr was nominated for an Academy Award in 1956 for her role as Anna in \u201cThe King and I\u201d; the film\u2019s soundtrack album sold hundreds of thousands of copies. For singing Anna\u2019s part on that album, Ms. Nixon recalled, she received a total of $420.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-interrupter\">\u00a0\u201cYou always had to sign a contract that nothing would be revealed,\u201d Ms. Nixon told the ABC News program \u201cNightline\u201d in 2007. \u201cTwentieth Century Fox, when I did \u2018The King and I,\u2019 threatened me.\u201d She continued, \u201cThey said, if anybody ever knows that you did any part of the dubbing for Deborah Kerr, we\u2019ll see to it that you don\u2019t work in town again.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"307\" data-total-count=\"2890\">Though Ms. Nixon honored the bargain, her work soon became one of Hollywood\u2019s worst-kept secrets. She became something of a cult figure, appearing as a guest on \u201c<a title=\"To Tell the Truth\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VvzccDam2Kg\" target=\"_blank\">To Tell the Truth<\/a>\u201d and as an answer to clues featured by \u201cJeopardy!,\u201d Trivial Pursuit and at least one New York Times crossword puzzle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"384\" data-total-count=\"3274\">Her increasing renown helped bring her spectral trade into the light and encouraged her to push for official recognition. \u201cThe anonymity didn\u2019t bother me until I sang <a title=\"Natalie Wood\u2019s songs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vij9bXUoE3A\" target=\"_blank\">Natalie Wood\u2019s songs<\/a> in \u2018West Side Story,\u2019 \u201d Ms. Nixon told The Times in 1967. \u201cThen I saw how important my singing was to the picture. It was Ms. Nixon\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"102\" data-total-count=\"3891\">The <a title=\"songs of the nightclub singer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_8p524uTVZU\" target=\"_blank\">songs of the nightclub singer<\/a>, played by Ms. Kerr, in \u201cAn Affair to Remember\u201d? Also Ms. Nixon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"315\" data-total-count=\"4206\">The second line of the couplet \u201cBut square-cut or pear-shape\/These rocks don\u2019t lose their shape,\u201d with its pinpoint high note on \u201ctheir,\u201d from \u201cGentlemen Prefer Blondes\u201d? That was Ms. Nixon too. (The film\u2019s star Marilyn Monroe sang the rest of the number, \u201c<a title=\"Diamonds Are a Girl\u2019s Best Friend\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eL7ETLLkQTY&amp;list=RDeL7ETLLkQTY\" target=\"_blank\">Diamonds Are a Girl\u2019s Best Friend<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"149\" data-total-count=\"4355\">It was a decidedly peculiar calling \u2014 and not one on which Ms. Nixon had ever planned \u2014 entailing not so much imitating actors as embodying them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"327\" data-total-count=\"4682\">\u201cIt\u2019s fascinating, getting inside the actresses you\u2019re singing for,\u201d she told The New York Journal-American in 1964. \u201cIt\u2019s like cutting off the top of their heads and seeing what\u2019s underneath. You have to know how they feel, as well as how they talk, in order <a title=\"to sing as they would sing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RbebD653agE\" target=\"_blank\">to sing as they would sing<\/a> \u2014 if they could sing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"241\" data-total-count=\"4923\">Over time, however, Ms. Nixon came to regard her spectacular mimetic gift as more curse than blessing. For despite her myriad accomplishments as a singer of art songs, she was obliged to spend years exorcising her ghostly cinematic presence.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"169\" data-total-count=\"5092\">\u201cIt got so I\u2019d lent my voice to so many others that I felt it no longer belonged to me,\u201d she told The Times in 1981. \u201cIt was eerie; I had lost part of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"156\" data-total-count=\"5248\">A petite, fine-boned woman who resembled Julie Andrews, Ms. Nixon was born Margaret Nixon McEathron on Feb. 22, 1930, in Altadena, Calif., near Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"431\" data-total-count=\"5679\">She began studying the violin at 4 and throughout her childhood played bit parts \u2014 \u201cthe freckle-faced brat,\u201d she called her typical role \u2014 in a string of Hollywood movies. At 11, already possessed of a fine singing voice, she won a vocal competition at the Los Angeles County Fair and found her true calling. She became a private pupil of Vera Schwarz, a distinguished Austrian soprano who had settled in the United States.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"224\" data-total-count=\"5903\">At 17, Ms. Nixon appeared as a vocal soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Leopold Stokowski, singing in Orff\u2019s \u201cCarmina Burana.\u201d She later studied opera at Tanglewood with Sarah Caldwell and Boris Goldovsky.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-5\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"312\" data-total-count=\"6215\">During her teenage years, Ms. Nixon worked as a messenger at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Knowing of her musical ability \u2014 she had perfect pitch and was an impeccable sight reader \u2014 the studio began recruiting her to furnish the singing voices of young actresses. The work helped pay for Ms. Nixon\u2019s voice lessons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"312\" data-total-count=\"6215\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2016\/07\/26\/arts\/26nixon-sub\/26nixon-sub-blog427.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"312\" data-total-count=\"6215\"><span class=\"caption-text\">Marni Nixon as Eliza Doolittle in \u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d onstage in 1964.<\/span><span class=\"credit\"><span class=\"visually-hidden\">Credit<\/span>Alix Jeffry<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"130\" data-total-count=\"6345\">Her first significant dubbing job was singing a Hindu lullaby for Margaret O\u2019Brien in \u201cThe Secret Garden,\u201d released in 1949.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\">\u00a0Ms. Nixon did occasionally take center stage, as when she played Eliza Doolittle in a 1964 revival of \u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d at City Center in New York. (Ms. Andrews had played the part in the original Broadway production, which opened in 1956.) In 1965, Ms. Nixon was seen on camera in a small role as a singing nun in \u201cThe Sound of Music,\u201d starring Ms. Andrews.<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"278\" data-total-count=\"6986\">On Broadway, Ms. Nixon appeared in the Sigmund Romberg musical \u201cThe Girl in Pink Tights\u201d in 1954 and, more recently, in the musical drama \u201cJames Joyce\u2019s \u2018The Dead\u2019 \u201d (2000), the 2001 revival of Stephen Sondheim\u2019s \u201cFollies\u201d and the 2003 revival of \u201cNine.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"222\" data-total-count=\"7208\">Ms. Nixon\u2019s first marriage, to Ernest Gold, a film composer who won an Oscar for the 1960 film \u201cExodus,\u201d ended in divorce, as did her second, to Lajos Frederick Fenster. Her third husband, Albert Block, died in 2015.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"411\" data-total-count=\"7619\">Survivors include her daughters from her first marriage, Martha Carr and Melani Gold Friedman; her sisters Donyl Mern Aleman, Adair McEathron Jenkins and Ariel Lea Witbeck; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A son from her first marriage, Andrew Gold, a popular songwriter whose hit \u201cThank You for Being a Friend\u201d became the theme of the NBC sitcom \u201cThe Golden Girls,\u201d <a title=\"His obituary.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/07\/arts\/music\/andrew-gold-singer-and-songwriter-dies-at-59.html\" target=\"_blank\">died in 2011 at 59<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"269\" data-total-count=\"7888\">Ms. Nixon\u2019s other onscreen credits include \u201cLaw &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit.\u201d In the 1970s and \u201980s, she was the host of \u201cBoomerang,\u201d a popular children\u2019s television show in Seattle, where she had made her home for some years before moving to Manhattan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"326\" data-total-count=\"8214\">She also supplied the singing voice of Grandmother Fa in Disney\u2019s animated film \u201cMulan,\u201d released in 1998. (The character\u2019s spoken dialogue was voiced by the actress June Foray.) She taught for many years at <a title=\"the California Institute of the Arts\" href=\"https:\/\/calarts.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">the California Institute of the Arts<\/a> in Valencia, where she was the founding director of the vocal department.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-6\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"219\" data-total-count=\"8433\">But it was her work as a ghost that is enshrined forever in the cinematic canon: \u201cWest Side Story\u201d won the Oscar for best picture of 1961; \u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d won for 1964. Both films remain perennials on television.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"256\" data-total-count=\"8689\">Ms. Nixon, who continued singing until she was in her 80s, eventually came to regard her heard-but-not-seen life with affection. She paid it homage in a one-woman show, \u201cMarni Nixon: The Voice of Hollywood,\u201d with which she toured the country for years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"205\" data-total-count=\"8894\">She did likewise in a memoir, \u201cI Could Have Sung All Night,\u201d published in 2006. (The memoir was written with a ghost, Stephen Cole, whom Ms. Nixon credited prominently on the cover and the title page.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"283\" data-total-count=\"9177\">In the few movie musicals made today, directors tend to cast actors who are trained singers (like Meryl Streep in \u201cInto the Woods\u201d) or those whose star power mitigates the fact that they are not (like Helena Bonham Carter in \u201cSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street\u201d).<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-candidate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"131\" data-total-count=\"9308\" data-node-uid=\"1\">What this means is that the ghost singers who were once a Hollywood mainstay have now, for the most part, become ghosts themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"131\" data-total-count=\"9308\" data-node-uid=\"1\">Source:\u00a0nytimes.com<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marni Nixon, the American cinema\u2019s most unsung singer, died on Sunday in Manhattan.
