Sure, new names pop up from year to year, but when it comes time to handing out the trophies, a good many old habits are hard to break.<\/p>\n<p>So if you want a preview of this year\u2019s ceremony, look up the 2015 show online. Because as you can see from the following final predictions, I\u2019m guessing the makers of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d and \u201cVeep,\u201d along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jeffrey Tambor and Allison Janney, will need to find new ways to say \u201cthank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/tv\/la-et-st-emmys-2016-nominees-winners-list-20160714-snap-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">The complete list of 2016 Emmy nominees \u00bb<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DRAMA SERIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Americans\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter Call Saul\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDownton Abbey\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHomeland\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHouse of Cards\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Robot\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis: <\/strong>With 23 nominations, including key mentions for acting, directing and writing, \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d is the clear favorite. Two of its main competitors \u2014 \u201cSaul\u201d and \u201cHouse of Cards\u201d \u2014 didn\u2019t earn nominations for writing or directing, categories a series usually needs to win. (The last exception: \u201cThe Practice\u201d in 1999, which somehow beat the first season of \u201cThe Sopranos.\u201d Not one of the Emmys\u2019 prouder moments.) Those polishing the silver and putting out the fine linen for one last \u201cDownton\u201d party should pay heed to the paucity of acting nominations \u2014 just one, for Maggie Smith. So unless there\u2019s going to be a<em>domo arigato, \u201cMr. Robot(o)\u201d<\/em> groundswell, \u201cThrones\u201d will remain in the seat of power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kyle Chandler, \u201cBloodline\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rami Malek, \u201cMr. Robot\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bob Odenkirk, \u201cBetter Call Saul\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Rhys, \u201cThe Americans\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liev Schreiber, \u201cRay Donovan\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Spacey, \u201cHouse of Cards\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Malek<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trbimg.com\/img-57a2a974\/turbine\/la-1470278036-snap-photo\/750\/750x422\" alt=\"Rami Malek as &quot;Mr. Robot.&quot;\" \/><\/p>\n<aside class=\"trb_embed\" data-content-id=\"88028748\" data-content-size=\"large\" data-content-type=\"image\" data-content-slug=\"la-1470278036-snap-photo\" data-content-subtype=\"photo\" data-role=\"socialshare_item imgsize_ratiosizecontainer lightbox_container \" data-state=\"\" data-embed-id=\"88028748\">\n<div class=\"trb_embed_modalBox\">\u00a0<strong>Analysis: <\/strong>The last three winners of this Emmy \u2014 Jeff Daniels, Bryan Cranston and Jon Hamm \u2014 are out of the picture, leaving the category open. Spacey is the safest choice, a brand name with two Oscars, along with a Golden Globe for \u201cCards.\u201d But he might be the new Hamm, a perennial nominee destined to go home empty-handed until the season where Frank Underwood is assassinated or leaves Washington to open his own barbecue joint. Maybe Odenkirk wins and \u201cSaul\u201d inherits \u201cBreaking Bad\u2019s\u201d Emmy mojo. Or maybe it\u2019s first-time nominee Malek, arguably scoring the most degree-of-difficulty points for the many guises he puts forward as the lonely, delusional antihero in \u201cMr. Robot.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><strong>LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Claire Danes, \u201cHomeland\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viola Davis, \u201cHow to Get Away with Murder\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taraji P. Henson, \u201cEmpire\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tatiana Maslany, \u201cOrphan Black\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keri Russell, \u201cThe Americans\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robin Wright, \u201cHouse of Cards\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner:<\/strong> Wright<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis:<\/strong> \u201cEmpire\u201d has fallen. Danes has received her due. Russell just made the club. And I\u2019m not convinced that many voters actually watch \u201cOrphan Black,\u201d as they\u2019ve only rewarded Maslany over the years. So it\u2019s likely between Wright, superb in this fourth season of \u201cHouse of Cards,\u201d and last year\u2019s winner, Davis. We know by the nominations which series Emmy voters prefer. \u201cCards\u201d earned 13; \u201cMurder\u201d just this one. With Davis already having an Emmy, look for Wright to finally win on her fourth try.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Banks, \u201cBetter Call Saul\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter Dinklage, \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kit Harington, \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Kelly, \u201cHouse of Cards\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben Mendelsohn, \u201cBloodline\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jon Voight, \u201cRay Donovan\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Harington<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis: <\/strong>This is Harington\u2019s first nomination, mostly because, let\u2019s face it, playing Jon Snow doesn\u2019t require that much range. But the stoic character dominated \u201cThrones\u2019\u201d sixth season and all those \u201cJon Snow Returns from the Dead\u201d headlines \u2014 along with Harington\u2019s improvement as an actor over the course of the series \u2014 could be enough to earn him the Emmy. That rules out \u201cblack-ish,\u201d \u201cModern Family\u201d and \u201cUnbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.\u201d \u201cTransparent\u201d received one less nomination for its second season, which corresponded to a slight downtick in its critical reception. \u201cVeep,\u201d meanwhile, nearly doubled its nomination count, going from nine\u00a0to 17. That also feels right, rewarding a show that didn\u2019t miss a beat as David Mandel replaced Armando Iannucci as showrunner. With 11 nominations, \u201cSilicon Valley\u201d is also on the upswing with voters and newcomer \u201cMaster of None\u201d just might be the best of the lot. But Emmy voters do repeat themselves (Jim Parsons, Tony Shalhoub, Alec Baldwin in this category), making it likely Tambor will be rewarded again for his revelatory\u00a0 work in \u201cTransparent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ellie Kemper, \u201cUnbreakable Kimmy Schmidt\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia Louis-Dreyfus, \u201cVeep\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laurie Metcalf, \u201cGetting On\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tracee Ellis Ross, \u201cblack-ish\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amy Schumer, \u201cInside Amy Schumer\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily Tomlin, \u201cGrace and Frankie\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Dreyfus<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis: <\/strong>Yes, that will be five in a row for the \u201cVeep\u201d lead. So what? Playing Selina Meyer, Dreyfus has always relished the character\u2019s self-absorption and self-loathing but this season\u2019s rather extreme (even for \u201cVeep\u201d) circumstances gave her occasion to reflect and even (just a bit) regret choices made. Dreyfus has never been better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Louie Anderson, \u201cBaskets\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andre Braugher, \u201cBrooklyn Nine-Nine\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tituss Burgess, \u201cUnbreakable Kimmy Schmidt\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ty Burrell, \u201cModern Family\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tony Hale, \u201cVeep\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keegan-Michael Key, \u201cKey &amp; Peele\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt Walsh, \u201cVeep\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Anderson<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis: <\/strong>Twenty-five years ago, beloved comedian Jonathan Winters won this Emmy for the short-lived series \u201cDavis Rules.\u201d (The show earned one other nod \u2014 for lighting.) I mention this because Anderson, another well-liked stand-up guy, received \u201cBaskets\u2019\u201d sole Emmy nomination. And that scarcity rarely results in a win. But Anderson\u2019s turn as Zach Galifianakis\u2019 mom is a special, vulnerable piece of work and deserves the award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anna Chlumsky, \u201cVeep\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaby Hoffman, \u201cTransparent\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allison Janney, \u201cMom\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judith Light, \u201cTransparent\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kate McKinnon, \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Niecy Nash, \u201cGetting On\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Janney<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analysis: <\/strong>Because you never pick against Janney, a seven-time winner, at the Emmys.
