The live-action adaptation of \u201cGhost in the Shell\u201d starring\u00a0Scarlett Johansson<\/a> as the cyberpunk-fighting cyborg just dropped its first bit of\u00a0footage. No doubt manga, anime and\u00a0genre fans everywhere will have something to say about this brief glimpse of the new dystopia.<\/p>\n

The first\u00a0footage from the feature film dropped\u00a0during the finale of\u00a0\u201cMr. Robot,\u201d because if a show about hackers taking down evil corporations entertains you, wait until you breathe in the cyberpunk horror\u00a0that is \u201cGhost in the Shell.\u201d<\/p>\n

The movie takes\u00a0place\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0fictional,\u00a0futuristic\u00a0Japanese city and follows\u00a0\u201cThe Major\u201d (Johansson)\u00a0and the members of a covert task force within the Japanese National Public Safety Commission made up of former detectives and military operatives.\u00a0The task\u00a0force fights cybercriminals in a dark, biotech future where the line between computers and humans is marred (usually with a lot of elaborate and dramatic wires and cybernetic plugs). Major is a member of this crime-fighting brigade but is also a symbol of the future\u2019s blurred lines of biotechnology as the character has gone through various mechanical upgrades to her person which endow her with many special abilities.<\/p>\n

Adapted from\u00a0Masamune Shirow\u2019s manga series, the\u00a0classic work of manga previously\u00a0inspired\u00a0the\u00a0animated film by\u00a0Mamoru Oshii\u00a0in\u00a01995 which helped solidify\u00a0\u201cGhost in the\u00a0Shell\u2019s\u201d place as a\u00a0cornerstone in cyberpunk literature and entertainment.<\/p>\n

The 2017-planned\u00a0movie\u00a0has already kicked up quite a bit of commotion.\u00a0When the\u00a0news dropped that main character, named Maj.\u00a0 Motoko Kusanagi in the series and animated feature,\u00a0would be played by Johansson, fan outrage over the alleged \u00a0\u201cwhitewashing\u201d was\u00a0loud.<\/a><\/p>\n

Thus far director\u00a0Rupert Sanders (\u201cSnow White and the Huntsman\u201d) has yet to comment on the situation but there\u2019s already a plethora of commentary surrounding the decision<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for the first look, the newly released clips show only nuggets from the feature film, which filmed\u00a0in New Zealand, and it may be some time before we get anything more, so what do you think? Is this the\u00a0Public Security Section 9 you envisioned?<\/p>\n
