Tim Burton\u2019s \u201cMiss Peregrine\u2019s Home for Peculiar Children\u201d topped a feeble crop of new releases to pick up first place at the weekend box office<\/a>, opening to $28.5 million.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a mediocre start given the fantasy film\u2019s $110 million budget. However, the adaptation of Ransom Riggs\u2019 best-selling young adult novel is doing well overseas where it made $36.5 million from 59 territories, so its global grosses could push it into the black. Burton is responsible for blockbusters such as \u201cBatman\u201d and \u201cPlanet of the Apes,\u201d but his commercial touch has been spotty of late. He hasn\u2019t had a major hit since 2010\u2019s \u201cAlice in Wonderland,\u201d with audiences rejecting the likes of \u201cDark Shadows,\u201d \u201cFrankenweenie,\u201d and \u201cBig Eyes.\u201d Fox and Chernin Entertainment backed \u201cMiss Peregrine\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson said he was pleased with the results, but maintains that it is too early to say whether or not a new franchise has been created.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a promising start, but it\u2019s too early to tell,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are multiple books and they are best-sellers, so the door is open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sequels or not, \u201cMiss Peregrine\u2019s\u201d is in a much better position than \u201cDeepwater Horizon<\/a>,\u201d after the expensive adventure drama from the \u201cLone Star\u201d team of Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg collapsed with a $20.6 million opening. The look at the men and women who were forced to grapple with one of the worst oil spills in history cost roughly $120 million to produce after incentives are taken into account. The hope is that strong word-of-mouth will bolster sales in the coming weeks and that the film will follow the blueprint of other adult dramas such as \u201cFury\u201d and \u201cThe Town\u201d by showing some endurance. But analysts are skeptical.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t spend that much money on this kind of film,\u201d said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. \u201cIt\u2019s a tough sell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics liked \u201cDeepwater Horizon,\u201d handing it an 82% \u201cfresh\u201d rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the strong reviews didn\u2019t translate into ticket sales. Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, has had a rough period at the box office. It is struggling to find a replacement<\/a> for \u201cThe Hunger Games,\u201d the hugely successful young adult series that concluded last year, and has seen the likes of \u201cGods of Egypt,\u201d \u201cBlair Witch,\u201d and \u201cThe Divergent Series: Allegiant\u201d falter at the multiplexes. At the same time, the company\u2019s share price has dropped more than 50% since last fall. Lionsgate\u2019s movie arm hopes to regain its stride with the upcoming release of \u201cLa La Land,\u201d an acclaimed musical with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and \u201cHacksaw Ridge,\u201d a war drama from Mel Gibson.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s \u201cMasterminds<\/a>.\u201d The heist-comedy about a hapless band of robbers was originally scheduled to be released last year, but found itself entangled in Relativity Media\u2019s bankruptcy proceedings. Freshly emerged from Chapter 11, Relativity had hoped that its release would signal to Hollywood<\/a> that the studio has put its financial troubles behind it. Yet, \u201cMasterminds\u201d eked out a feeble $6.6 million, a disastrous result for the mid-budget comedy. At one point during its bankruptcy proceedings, Relativity predicted that \u201cMasterminds\u201d would generate $125.4 million in revenues for the studio over its lifetime and $47.1 million in profit. Those projections now look very rosy.<\/p>\n

Disney\u2019s \u201cQueen of Katwe\u201d also bombed in its expansion. The drama about a chess prodigy from Uganda only managed to generate roughly $2.6 million after moving from 52 to 1,242 screens. It has made a disappointing $3 million since it opened. Disney is primarily in the blockbuster business, offering up Marvel adventures, \u201cStar Wars\u201d sequels and spinoffs, and the latest Pixar fantasies. It has, however, tried to do a series of uplifting, lower-budgeted dramas such as \u201cMillion Dollar Arm\u201d and \u201cMcFarland, USA,\u201d with middling results.<\/p>\n

Last weekend\u2019s champion, \u201cThe Magnificent Seven,\u201d slid to third place, earning $15.7 million. The Western remake with Denzel Washington has racked up $61.6 million in its first two weeks of release.<\/p>\n

The animated comedy \u201cStorks\u201d and Clint Eastwood\u2019s \u201cSully\u201d took fourth and fifth place on the chart, earning $13.8 million and $8.4 million, respectively. \u201cStorks\u201d has made $38.8 million in its first two weeks in theaters, while \u201cSully\u201d has racked up an impressive $105.4 million over its first month of release.<\/p>\n

In limited release, Bleecker Street\u2019s \u201cDenial,\u201d a drama about a libel trial initiated by a Holocaust denier, debuted to $102,101 on five theaters for a $20,420 per-screen average. The indie studio will continue to expand the film\u2019s release in the coming weeks, pushing it into ten new markets and more than 25 theaters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s accessible, it\u2019s intelligent, and it\u2019s riveting,\u201d said Jack Foley, Bleecker Street\u2019s distribution chief. \u201cPeople come away having had an outstanding time at the movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

A24 also bowed \u201cAmerican Honey,\u201d a buzzy look at a teenage mag crew that took Cannes by storm last May. The Shia LaBeouf drama kicked off in four theaters where it made $75,370 for a per-screen average of $18,843.<\/p>\n

Overall ticket sales fell short of the year-ago period when \u201cThe Martian\u201d opened to a massive $54.3 million. Revenues were down nearly 25% at roughly $114 million, the third straight weekend of declines.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so much competition for the movies,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. \u201cYou\u2019ve got the fall television season kicking into high gear and people are so distracted with the presidential election. The films out there are not resonating on their own or there are too many distractions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next weekend brings the debuts of \u201cThe Girl on the Train,\u201d an adaptation of a best-selling mystery novel, and \u201cThe Birth of a Nation,\u201d a slave revolt drama.<\/p>\n
