Singer-songwriter awarded for \u2018having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition\u2019<\/p>\n

Bob Dylan<\/a> was named the surprise winner of the Nobel prize for literature in Stockholm today \u201cfor having created new poetic expressions with the great American song tradition\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters after the announcement, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Sara Danius said she \u201choped\u201d the Academy would not be criticised for its choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe times they are a\u2019changing, perhaps\u201d, she said, comparing the songs of the American songwriter, who had yet to be informed of his win, to the works of Homer and Sappho.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course he deserves it \u2013 he\u2019s got it,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s a great poet \u2013 a great poet in the English speaking tradition. For 54 years he\u2019s been at it, reinventing himself constantly, creating a new identity.\u201d<\/p>\n
