When news broke that Bob Dylan had been awarded the Nobel Prize<\/a> in literature, thousands of enthusiasts lined up to pay kudos\u00a0and to thank the\u00a0Swedish Academy for acknowledging his genius.<\/p>\n

So far, Dylan himself isn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n

Nearly a week after\u00a0the announcement, the artist, who just finished two consecutive weekends performing as part of the Desert Trip music festival, has yet to acknowledge the honor, Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy that awards the prize, is reported as saying.<\/p>\n

In fact, the mercurial artist\u00a0hasn\u2019t even indicated whether he will attend the award ceremony, although, according to Danius, no one has talked directly to Dylan. Rather, an unnamed Dylan affiliate\u00a0acknowledged the award.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have called and emailed to this associate\u00a0and received a very friendly response,\u201d she said in a statement to Swedish Radio. \u201cRight now, it is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

That shouldn\u2019t surprise anyone who has followed the artist\u2019s career. Reliably unpredictable, the artist has appeared in Victoria\u2019s Secret commercials while skipping state dinners. He refuses to allow news photographers to shoot his concerts, and rarely, if ever, sits for interviews.<\/p>\n

Onstage at Desert Trip the day after his award was announced, Dylan didn\u2019t say anything about the newly minted honor \u2014\u00a0but he did play \u201cLike a Rolling Stone\u201d for the first time in a few years.<\/p>\n

If Dylan never picks up the phone, he won\u2019t be the first. The philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre famously declined the honor in 1964.<\/p>\n
