For nearly 40 years, the \u201cStar Wars\u201d franchise has been targeted at all ages, from the youngest padawans to the most grizzled Jedi masters. Speaking to The Times in 1977, shortly before the release of\u00a0\u201cA New Hope,\u201d George Lucas <\/a>said he thought of the film \u2014 which was initially rated\u00a0G\u00a0until its studio backers asked for a less kiddie-sounding\u00a0PG \u2014 as \u201ca movie Disney would have made when Walt Disney was alive,\u201d sagely\u00a0predicting, \u201cIf I make money, it will be from the toys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The latest installment in the franchise, \u201cRogue One: A Star Wars Story,\u201d which hits theaters Dec. 16,\u00a0is something a bit different. As the title suggests,\u00a0it\u2019s gone slightly rogue.<\/p>\n

The story of a secret Rebel mission to steal the plans to the Empire\u2019s Death Star, \u201cRogue One\u201d is the first film in the franchise that truly leans into the \u201cwars\u201d in \u201cStar Wars,\u201d featuring a kind of visceral violence, un-glossy\u00a0naturalism and\u00a0moral complexity unlike anything ever seen before in Lucas\u2019 space opera. The film carries the same PG-13 rating as last year\u2019s \u201cThe Force Awakens,\u201d but you\u2019d have to reach back to 1980\u2019s\u00a0\u201cThe Empire Strikes Back\u201d to find a \u201cStar Wars\u201d movie this darkly hued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pushed it,\u201d director Gareth Edwards said of the film\u2019s grittiness and intensity. \u201cWe pushed it all the way to the edge, probably went off the edge a little bit and then came back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Make no mistake \u2014 an army of Stormtroopers couldn\u2019t keep kids away from \u201cRogue One.\u201d\u00a0And odds are most will love it and drag their parents directly\u00a0to the nearest toy store\u00a0to stock up on action figures and miniature space ships.<\/p>\n

Still, those behind the film caution that it may be a bit much for the kinds of preschool-aged tots for whom the sight in \u201cReturn of the Jedi\u201d\u00a0of a teddy bear-like Ewok being killed by the blast of an Imperial walker\u00a0may have been horrifying enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think \u2018Rogue One\u2019 might be a little hardcore for really young kids,\u201d said cast member Riz Ahmed, who plays a cargo pilot named Bodhi Rook. He laughed.\u00a0\u201cHaving said that, I saw \u2018Nightmare on Elm Street\u2019 when I was 6, so what am I talking about? Take your babies!\u201d<\/p>\n

Industrial Light and Magic Chief Creative Officer John Knoll,\u00a0who served as the film\u2019s visual effects supervisor,\u00a0said a great deal of thought went into how far to push the edginess of \u201cRogue One.\u201d\u00a0And, as the one who initially conceived the idea for the story in the first place more than a decade ago,\u00a0he would know as well as anyone.<\/p>\n
