After 17 years of playing Marvel\u2019s most popular mutant, Hugh Jackman has revealed an embarrassing secret. When he was cast, Jackman had no idea what a wolverine was.<\/p>\n
In fact, Jackman had no idea wolverines were even a real animal. For all that he knew he may as well have been playing a character named\u00a0the Unicorn or the Hippogriff.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t even know there was a wolverine. I literally, embarrassingly did about two weeks of research on wolves. I was rehearsing for three weeks and I was shooting, so I was kind of on my own. I remember going past an IMAX in Toronto, and there was an IMAX documentary about wolves, and so I thought, \u2018I\u2019ll go and see that\u2019,\u201d Jackman tells the Associated Press.<\/p>\n
It didn\u2019t take X-Men<\/i> director Bryan Singer long to realize that something was off about Jackman\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said, \u2018Are you sort of walking funny, what\u2019s going on?\u2019 And I said, \u2018I\u2019ve been doing this thing with wolves,\u2019 and he goes, \u2018You know you\u2019re not a wolf, right?\u2019\u201d Jackman remembered. Singer tried to clarify.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said, \u2018Well, there\u2019s no such thing as a wolverine,\u2019\u201d Jackman said, to which the actor recalls Singer responding, \u201d\u2018Go to the zoo, dude.\u2019 I literally didn\u2019t know it existed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jackman\u2019s confusion over the difference between a wolf and wolverine would be revisited in X-Men Origins: Wolverine<\/i>. That film includes a mythological story explaining why wolverines howl at the moon. Except that wolverines don\u2019t<\/i> howl at the moon. Wolves do.<\/p>\n
