It\u2019s actually part of a new trial by the music streaming giant aimed at giving music labels the chance to highlight particular songs by select artists \u2014 for a fee.<\/p>\n<p>Spotify confirmed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/06\/19\/spotify-sponsored-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechCrunch<\/a>\u00a0on Monday that it\u2019s started testing sponsored songs, explaining that it\u2019s showing them only to users of its free tier. However, it seems that some of Spotify\u2019s paying subscribers are also seeing tracks chosen and paid for by music labels at the top of their display.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently disgruntled at having sponsored content pushed his way, Spotify subscriber\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/liamtmaloney\/status\/876756391138127872?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=about%3Asrcdoc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Liam Maloney<\/a>\u00a0dived into his Settings to discover that he had to toggle a new \u201csponsored song\u201d button to get rid of the unwanted content, indicating it\u2019s opt-out rather than opt-in. We\u2019ve reached out to Spotify for clarification on whether paying subscribers are supposed to be seeing sponsored songs and will update when we hear back.<\/p>\n<p>Below you can see an example of a sponsored song, with\u00a0<em>Call Me<\/em>\u00a0by Neiked positioned at the top of a playlist along with a \u201csave song\u201d button.<\/p>\n<div class=\"m-credited-image aligncenter\"><a class=\"wp-image-1201353 is-zoomable\" href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/digitaltrends-uploads-prod\/2017\/06\/sponsored-songs-spotify.jpg\" data-dt-zoomable=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1201353 dt-lazy-loaded alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/icdn1.digitaltrends.com\/image\/sponsored-songs-spotify-720x720.jpg\" alt=\"spotify sponsored songs\" data-dt-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/icdn1.digitaltrends.com\/image\/sponsored-songs-spotify-720x720.jpg\" data-image-id=\"1201353\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"m-image-credit\" data-image-id=\"1201353\">Liam Maloney<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, there\u2019s no visual note informing users that the song is sponsored, though a verbal announcement is made just before the track starts playing.<\/p>\n<h3>Revenue stream<\/h3>\n<p>If Spotify decides to make sponsored songs a permanent part of its service, it\u2019ll give music labels another way to push their artists, which could ultimately lead to an increase in sales of concert tickets and artist merchandise. For Spotify, sponsored songs offers another revenue stream via its free tier as the company continues with preparations to go public, possibly later this year.<\/p>\n<p>While Spotify\u2019s money-making efforts have long included banner ads as part of its free service, last year it also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/digital\/spotify-will-now-let-brands-sponsor-most-popular-playlists-171706\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">started letting brands<\/a>\u00a0sponsor its more popular playlists by allowing them to include logos and videos. Sponsored playlists try to blend content and context, so, for example, Spotify\u2019s \u201cCardio\u201d playlist that offers \u201cupbeat songs to keep you motivated while doing your cardio\u201d could be \u201cperfect for a footwear brand expanding from lifestyle shoes to workout sneakers,\u201d the company suggested.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re seeing sponsored songs but would rather not, you can disable the function on desktop by hitting Settings and scrolling down to Display Options and toggling the Show Sponsored Songs button.
