Perhaps, but it won\u2019t be Mutt Williams \u2014 a.k.a. Indy\u2019s son, Henry Jones III \u2014 the character Shia LaBeouf played in 2008\u2019s\u00a0<em>Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say,\u201d screenwriter David Koepp, who has penned a script for the fifth film in the storied\u00a0<em>Indiana Jones<\/em>\u00a0franchise, tells EW. \u201cAnd the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"universal-ad-1\" class=\"univ-ad ad-universal__content ad-lazy-load-on-viewable people--ad-center_horizontal ad-processed\" data-ad-pos=\"1\">\u00a0Koepp\u2019s confirmation follows wide speculation that Ford, who originated the role of the globetrotting adventurer in 1981\u2019s\u00a0<em>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em>, would eventually abdicate his throne to a younger actor as the series progressed under Steven Spielberg\u2019s direction.\u00a0<em>Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/em>\u2018s ending even teased LaBeouf\u2019s character\u2019s potential future in the series, with a closing scene that saw the iconic headpiece ride a breeze and land at the\u00a0<em>Even Stevens<\/em>\u00a0actor\u2019s feet, before Ford swooped in to grab it out of his hands and place it back on his own head.<\/div>\n<div class=\"univ-ad ad-universal__content ad-lazy-load-on-viewable people--ad-center_horizontal ad-processed\" data-ad-pos=\"1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"univ-ad ad-universal__content ad-lazy-load-on-viewable people--ad-center_horizontal ad-processed\" data-ad-pos=\"1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ewedit.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/09\/shia-labeouf-indiana-jones.jpg?w=2700\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"univ-ad ad-universal__content ad-lazy-load-on-viewable people--ad-center_horizontal ad-processed\" data-ad-pos=\"1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"univ-ad ad-universal__content ad-lazy-load-on-viewable people--ad-center_horizontal ad-processed\" data-ad-pos=\"1\">\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-body__inner\">\n<p>While Mutt won\u2019t be embarking on any perilous journeys alongside his father any time soon, Koepp says he and Spielberg are largely satisfied with the current version of the screenplay, and production could begin in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re plugging away at it. In terms of when we would start, I think that\u2019s up to Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Ford,\u201d he continues, playfully teasing that the plot will involve \u201csome precious artifact that they\u2019re all looking for\u201d throughout the film. \u201cI know we\u2019ve got a script we\u2019re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting\u00a0<em>The Post<\/em>\u00a0\u2026. If the stars align, hopefully it\u2019ll be his next film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After appearing in\u00a0<em>Crystal Skull<\/em>, LaBeouf, whose representatives did not return EW\u2019s request for comment, criticized the production in a\u00a02010 interview with the<em>\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/em>. He told the paper he felt as if he \u201cdropped the ball on the legacy\u00a0that people loved and cherished,\u201d and that Ford wasn\u2019t happy with the film either.
