The reviews of\u00a0<em>Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0are in, and everyone seems to be agreed: Taika Waititi&#8217;s first Marvel movie is the most enjoyable\u00a0<em>Thor<\/em>\u00a0movie to date \u2014 but that might not be quite the blessing it might be assumed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The relatively laidback angle on all the murderous spree-ing gives Chris Hemsworth a chance to find the comic groove beneath the title character&#8217;s beefcake godliness. He does it expertly, and the self-mocking humor is all the more welcome given Thor&#8217;s essential blandness,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/review\/thor-ragnarok-1049952\">wrote\u00a0<em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>&#8216;s Sheri Linden<\/a>. &#8220;Waititi&#8217;s interest in intimate stories was evident in\u00a0<em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/em>, but it&#8217;s the knack for dry comedy that he brought to the mockumentary\u00a0<em>What We Do in the Shadows<\/em>\u00a0that shapes the new\u00a0<em>Thor<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2017\/10\/19\/16499348\/thor-ragnarok-review-avengers-marvel-2017\"><em>Polygon<\/em>&#8216;s Brock Wilbur was equally won over<\/a>. &#8220;<em>Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0is the child of confident filmmaking and understanding of what the Thor franchise could have always been,&#8221; he wrote, adding that the movie &#8220;sets the new standard by which the entire MCU will have to adhere to, including the upcoming\u00a0<em>Avengers: Infinity War.\u00a0Rangarok<\/em>\u00a0is an intense space opera that genuinely cares about every character having a journey and doesn\u2019t waste a second of screen time on anything artificial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly impressed was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/thor-ragnarok\/review\/\">James Dyer of\u00a0<em>Empire<\/em><\/a>, who wrote, &#8220;Like a cosmic fever dream,\u00a0<em>Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0is a disorientating cocktail of riotous color and batty antics that seem almost unreal after the fact. Try to fit it into an established mould at your peril, but roll with this and you\u2019ll discover not only a top-tier addition to the MCU, but one of the most flat-out enjoyable comedies of the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If anything, the movie might be\u00a0<em>too<\/em>\u00a0enjoyable, with a number of critics noting that the fun undercuts the dramatic tension that the movie \u2014 about a threat to destroy Thor&#8217;s home of Asgard \u2014 requires. &#8220;Comic-book movies have spent a long time striving to be taken as serious, grownup entertainment but\u00a0<em>Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0is almost an admission that you can\u2019t play this material straight,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2017\/oct\/19\/thor-ragnarok-review-chris-hemsworth-cate-blanchett-taika-waititi\">wrote\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>&#8216;s Steve Rose<\/a>. &#8220;The price of this irreverence is the possibility of taking anything that happens all that seriously \u2013 even the potential destruction of the Norse gods\u2019 home (that\u2019s not a spoiler either: it\u2019s the title of the movie).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/movies\/2017\/10\/19\/review-thor-ragnarok-fun-marvel-romp-doesnt-take-itself-seriously-enough\/776461001\/\"><em>USA Today<\/em>&#8216;s Brian Truitt agreed<\/a>. &#8220;The adventure leans hard into the campy\u00a0<em>Flash Gordon<\/em>\u00a0vibe and slapstick humor, so much so that when the third act save-the-world stuff comes, it doesn\u2019t feel completely earned,&#8221; he noted, comparing it to other Marvel features. &#8220;The\u00a0<em>Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em>\u00a0movies,\u00a0<em>Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/em>\u00a0and even\u00a0<em>Ant-Man<\/em>\u00a0struck an enjoyable balance between the absurd and the serious that\u00a0<em>Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0just doesn\u2019t quite nail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/story\/20171019-film-review-thor-ragnarok-is-marvels-best-yet\">the BBC&#8217;s Nicholas Barber<\/a>, the problem with the movie is that &#8220;it\u2019s all so bubbly and inconsequential that it can feel as if you\u2019re watching a hugely expensive sitcom episode. For much of the running time, the heroes are bantering and squabbling on the Grandmaster\u2019s glittery planet, and they seem to be light years away \u2014 emotionally as well as geographically \u2014 from anything that\u2019s happening on Asgard, let alone on Earth. In theory, the fate of the universe is at stake. In practice, you\u2019ll care more about Thor\u2019s new haircut than Hela\u2019s reign of terror.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(But it&#8217;s such a good haircut!)<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone thinks that the movie lacks depth, however.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemablend.com\/reviews\/1714619\/thor-ragnarok-review\"><em>Cinema Blend<\/em>&#8216;s Eric Eisenberg argues<\/a>\u00a0that the movie manages to develop characters more than might be expected. &#8220;More than just having a spike in witty lines, Thor is free of the weight of whether or not to take Odin&#8217;s crown, as well as his obligations to Earth, and instead gets to use this sequel to stand up as the proud defender of Asgard in time of crisis,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Hulk has literally evolved, going from mindless beast to a syntax-challenged meathead who can finally start to articulate his side of his inner-conflict with Bruce Banner. And then there&#8217;s Loki, who actually proves everyone wrong by being a somewhat effective leader of his realm \u2014 even if it means letting everywhere else descend into chaos. As much as we&#8217;ve seen a lot of these heroes and villains over the last decade, this story successfully never feels stale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Leave it to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/screencrush.com\/thor-ragnarok-review\/\"><span data-scayt_word=\"ScreenCrush's\" data-scaytid=\"17\"><em>ScreenCrush<\/em>&#8216;s<\/span>\u00a0Matt Singer<\/a>\u00a0to put it in perspective. Writing that &#8220;the movie is sometimes as sloppy as an Asgardian thunder god after too many pints of mead,&#8221; he suggested that the movie is exactly as fun (and funny) as everyone says, but ultimately emotionally empty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The reality is this movie is so colorful and zippy and\u00a0packed with outlandish supporting characters, that Hemsworth\u2019s job is relatively easy.\u00a0He just needs to look great, kick ass, nail the one-liners, and ride off into the sunset (or\u00a0<em>Avengers: Infinity War<\/em>, whichever comes first),&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;<em>Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>\u00a0is sort of like a giant flatscreen TV hanging on a wall with an enormous hole in the middle of it. The TV is beautiful, but it doesn\u2019t fix the hole.
