Interactive and its new brand, the aptly named Portkey Games. Niantic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nianticlabs.com\/blog\/wizardsunite\/\">confirmed the news<\/a>, stating, \u201cWith\u00a0<em>Harry Potter: Wizards Unite<\/em>, players that have been dreaming of becoming real life Wizards will finally get the chance to experience J.K. Rowling\u2019s Wizarding World.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"V1PvwO\">Rumors of a\u00a0<em>Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0AR game developed by Niantic had swirled last year, but were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/pokemon-go-developer-niantic-to-develop-harry-potter-go\/\">ruled a hoax by Snopes<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/8\/29\/16184500\/the-walking-dead-our-world-augmented-reality-game-iphone-android\">Many had initially predicted<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<em>Pok\u00e9mon Go\u00a0<\/em>would spawn a series of copycat AR games, and now that prediction finally seems to be coming true.<\/p>\n<p id=\"POy3vb\">According to Niantic,\u00a0<em>Harry Potter: Wizards Unite<\/em>\u00a0will be influenced by Niantic\u2019s cult classic game\u00a0<em>Ingress<\/em>, which allows people to collect boosts, defend locations, and explore their environment, mixing the real world and the digital. In\u00a0<em>Wizards Unite<\/em>, players will fight \u201clegendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies,\u201d which we can assume to be Death Eaters and Lord Voldemort.\u00a0<em>Harry Potter<\/em>\u2019s magical elements mixing in with the Muggle world is already a theme in the books and movies, so we can expect to see that reappear now in AR form.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/thumbor\/DCVUm7kxucDESmOqP3DXi0FOBZc=\/1200x0\/filters:no_upscale()\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/9638395\/2953x1659_blue.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A similar AR-based magical game, called\u00a0<em>Maguss<\/em>, has already been made, and is currently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maguss.org\/learnmore\/\">in early alpha<\/a>. (It doesn\u2019t own any rights to openly incorporating\u00a0<em>Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0elements into the game.) In\u00a0<em>Maguss<\/em>, you can fight in raids and against magical creatures. You can also choose to buy a Maguss wand to use alongside the mobile app, which is available on iOS and Android.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Jo6iN5\">Niantic has had scaling problems when making games for a beloved franchise that millions are clamoring for before. The company hasn\u2019t had the greatest relationship with its\u00a0<em>P<\/em><em>ok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>\u00a0player base, as it rolled out updates and bug fixes months after players complained about them and as some initial users dropped the game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h8J3Qg\">Niantic has apologized in the past for the many technical errors, and has tried to continue making quality of life improvements. &#8220;With our previous game\u00a0<em>Ingress<\/em>\u00a0we were very communicative with players, and very open. And we weren\u2019t as communicative and open in the beginning [of\u00a0<em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>] because that was sort of a new process for our partners,\u201d Niantic CEO John Hanke acknowledged to\u00a0<em>The Verge<\/em>\u00a0in July. \u201cI think we\u2019ve become much more open over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"IXbA6Z\">Despite all of the setbacks,\u00a0<em>Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/em>\u00a0was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/6\/19\/15828802\/pokemon-go-update-raids-new-gyms\">still seeing 65 million monthly users<\/a>\u00a0in June, according to Niantic. This time around, any additional infrastructure problems from taking on a large franchise like<em>\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em>\u00a0could also be eased by the Warner Bros\u2019 San Francisco development team.
