Tolkien&#8217;s The Lord of the Rings is currently in the works, with Amazon Studios reportedly the frontrunner to bring the classic fantasy novel to the small screen.<\/p>\n<p><i>Variety<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/tv\/news\/lord-of-the-rings-amazon-1202606519\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that the Tolkien estate has been shopping a new series about the 1954 novel to networks with help from Warner Bros. Television; the production company is also the home of New Line Cinema, which distributed director Peter Jackson&#8217;s big-screen\u00a0<i>Lord of the Rings<\/i>\u00a0trilogy in the early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is also reportedly involved in attempting to acquire the TV rights to\u00a0<i>The Lord of the Rings<\/i>. As\u00a0<i><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/lord-rings-tv-series-works-1054978\"><i>The Hollywood Reporter\u00a0<\/i>notes<\/a>, the Warner Bros. and Tolkien estate partnership comes four months after the two sides resolved a five-year, $80 million lawsuit regarding profit participation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/news\/tolkien-estate-sues-warner-bros-over-lord-of-the-rings-slot-machines-20121121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and slot machines<\/a>) over the studio&#8217;s Tolkien films.<\/p>\n<p>Both\u00a0<i>The Hollywood Reporter<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Variety<\/i>\u00a0add that the project, which would likely take a\u00a0<i>Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/i>approach to the subject matter, is a long way from being officially announced, with no writer or director yet on board to reinterpret Tolkien&#8217;s epic.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Lord of the Rings<\/i>\u00a0trilogy combined for nearly $3 billion at the box office when it was released in three installments \u2013\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/reviews\/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-fellowship-of-the-ring-20011220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Fellowship of the Ring<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/reviews\/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-two-towers-20021218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Two Towers<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/reviews\/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-return-of-the-king-20031217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Return of the King<\/a><\/i>\u00a0\u2013 between 2001 and 2003.
