If you’re looking for something specifically more relevant to the events of\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>, we’ve got you covered there too. We’re going to list five classic Star Trek episodes that are worth revisiting if you’ve been enjoying\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>, and since CBS All Access has every episode of Star Trek ever among its digital library, anyone who has been watching\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0should have no problem streaming these episodes.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

For the purposes of this list, we’re looking specifically at episodes of\u00a0Star Trek: The Original Series<\/em>.\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0is a prequel to the original series, taking place about a decade before Captain Kirk’s five-year mission aboard the\u00a0Enterprise<\/em>. Because of that closeness chronologically, the events of\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/a><\/em>\u00a0can be seen reverberating most clearly in the events of\u00a0Star Trek: The Original Series<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Discovery<\/em>\u00a0even borrows a few characters first introduced in\u00a0Star Trek:\u00a0<\/em>The Original Series<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Some of those shared characters will be the focus of the episodes on this list. Some other themes these episodes look at include the ever-tense relationship between the Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire, since the Federation-Klingon War has been the major story arc of\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/a><\/em>‘s first chapter, as well as some of the things we expect to factor in the show’s second chapter, and episodes that are important to some popular\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0fan theories.<\/p>\n

Here are the five episodes you should revisit during the\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0break.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

SLIDE 1\/5 \u2013 “ERRAND OF MERCY”<\/header>\n

Season 1, Episode 26<\/strong><\/p>\n

With the Klingons being such a massive part of\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>‘s first season, we had to find at least one classic\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0episode that shows the Federation and Klingon rivalry in its original form, and “Errand of Mercy” perfectly fits the bill.<\/p>\n

\n

“Errand of Mercy” begins with war officially being declared between the Federation of Planets and the Klingon\u00a0Empire. The\u00a0Enterprise<\/em>\u00a0is immediately sent on a mission to the planet Organia, a relatively primitive planet that occupies a strategically vital section of space. However, after Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock beam down, the Klingons\u00a0also arrive and occupy the planet under the orders of the newly proclaimed governor Kor.<\/p>\n

“Errand of Mercy” is a great episode for seeing how relations between the Klingons and the Federation have progressed a decade after\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0Season One. Plus, Kor\u00a0is a fantastic antagonist for Kirk who reappears years later in\u00a0Star Trek: Deep Space Nine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

SLIDE 2\/5 \u2013 “MIRROR, MIRROR”<\/header>\n
\"Star<\/figure>\n

Season 2, Episode 4<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you only watch one classic Star Trek episode while you’re waiting for\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0to return, “Mirror, Mirror” should probably be the one.<\/p>\n

\n

Why? Because we know that the mirror universe will be featured in a multiple-episode arc during\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>‘s first season, and with only six episodes left, that arc is likely going to start very quickly when the series returns. In fact, it’s possible that the arc began at the end of the fall finale.<\/p>\n

“Mirror, Mirror” is the episode that introduced Star Trek fans to the mirror universe, and basically created the mirror universe trope in popular culture. This darker timeline\u00a0is home to mirror versions of Starfleet’s\u00a0greatest heroes,\u00a0who instead serve as members of the Terran\u00a0Empire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

SLIDE 3\/5 \u2013 “I, MUDD”<\/header>\n

Season 2, Episode 8<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rainn\u00a0Wilson stole the show in guest-starring as the scoundrel antagonist Harcourt Fenton\u00a0“Harry” Mudd in two episodes of the first chapter of\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>, “Choose Your Pain” and “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad.”<\/p>\n

Here’s a chance to see Mudd\u00a0as he first appeared in Star Trek lore, a decade after the events of\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>, sometime after Mudd\u00a0escaped the de facto house arrest of his wife and his father-in-law on Earth.<\/p>\n

Mudd\u00a0first appears in the Season One episode “Mudd’s\u00a0Women,” but the episode doesn’t hold up well these days. “I, Mudd” is far superior, with Mudd\u00a0luring Kirk and the\u00a0Enterprise<\/em>\u00a0crew to a planet inhabited by hundreds of androids who have proclaimed him king.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

SLIDE 4\/5 \u2013 “JOURNEY TO BABEL”<\/header>\n

Season 2, Episode 10<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sarek is one of the most important guest stars on\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>, having raised Science Officer Michael Burnham from a child. However, in addition to that, the\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0episode “Lethe” revealed some new information about Sarek’s relationship with his biological son, Spock.<\/p>\n

\n

In “Lethe,” Star Trek fans learned that Sarek\u00a0had to choose which of his children to allow to enlist in the Vulcan Expeditionary Group. Sarek\u00a0chose Spock, the younger of the two children, despite the fact that Michael wanted it so badly, only for Spock to choose to follow his foster sister into Starfleet Academy instead.<\/p>\n

This information casts “Journey to Babel,” the first appearance of Sarek\u00a0in Star Trek, in a new light. The episode lets us know that Sarek\u00a0has been distant from his son after Spock joined Starfleet, but the reason given is simply that Spock broke tradition. Knowing that Spock’s decision also meant that Sarek\u00a0hurt Michael Burnham\u00a0pointlessly adds a new layer to the relationship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

SLIDE 5\/5 \u2013 “THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES”<\/header>\n

Season 2, Episode 15<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The Trouble with Tribbles” is another episode to feature the Klingons, but in a much different context.<\/p>\n

Rather than having the Federation and the Klingon\u00a0Empire openly at war, the episode finds the\u00a0Enterprise<\/em>\u00a0crew and a crew of Klingons\u00a0both visiting an ostensibly\u00a0neutral\u00a0space station, but tensions nonetheless run high.<\/p>\n

The reason this episode is worth revisiting during the\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>\u00a0break – aside from the fact that it is one of the greatest episodes of Star Trek ever made – is that the twist ending serves as the basis for one of the biggest fan theories\u00a0currently circulating around\u00a0Star Trek: Discovery<\/em>, that Lt. Ash Tyler is actually the Klingon\u00a0Voq.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
