The Force dominated at the box office as Disney-Lucasfilm\u2019s\u00a0\u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0opened with a stellar $220 million weekend at 4,232 North American sites \u2014 the second-highest opening weekend of all time.<\/p>\n

\u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi<\/a>\u201d trails only the $248 million launch of 2015\u2019s \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tentpole opened with $104.8 million on Friday (including $45 million from Thursday night previews) for the second-best opening day of all time, followed by $64 million on Saturday and a projected $51.3 million on Sunday. With international grosses hitting $230 million, \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi\u201d totaled $450 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi\u201d<\/a>\u00a0has become only the fourth movie to top $200 million domestically in its opening frame, joining 2015\u2019s \u201cThe Force Awakens,\u201d 2015\u2019s \u201cJurassic World\u201d with $208.8 million, and 2012\u2019s \u201cThe Avengers\u201d with $207.4 million. It will finish the weekend 29% above the \u201cStar Wars<\/a>\u201d spinoff \u201cRogue One,\u201d which opened with $155.1 million on the same weekend a year ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cTruly in a class by themselves, the movies of the \u201cStar Wars\u201d franchise continue to re-write the\u00a0history books as to what is possible in terms of box office performance,\u201d said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Star Wars: The Last Jedi\u2019 posts the second biggest preview gross, the\u00a0second\u00a0best\u00a0single day gross ever recorded\u00a0and if that were not enough, the second biggest\u00a0opening weekend\u00a0ever in North America,\u00a0joining the elusive $200 million club with a knockout of a movie that is proving to be both catnip to the critics and moviegoers alike\u00a0over what has become the\u00a0strongest moviegoing weekend of 2017,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Audiences surveyed by comScore\u2019s PostTrak gave stellar marks to the tentpole with 66% calling it \u201cexcellent\u201d and another 23% rating it \u201cvery good.\u201d A total of 79% said they would \u201cdefinitely recommend\u201d the movie.<\/p>\n

The stellar performance comes three days after Disney announced it was\u00a0spending $52.4 billion to acquire 21st Century Fox<\/a>\u00a0assets \u2014 a move that will make the company the undisputed leader in box office share in coming<\/p>\n

Domestic tracking for \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi<\/a>\u201d has remained in the $200 million range since Nov. 22, when first estimates emerged. \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d wound up its domestic run with a record-setting $936.7 million and $2.07 billion worldwide. \u201cRogue One\u201d went on to gross $532.2 million by the end of its domestic run and $1.03 billion worldwide.<\/p>\n

Directed by\u00a0Rian Johnson<\/a>, \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi\u201d picks up where \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d left off. It stars returning cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Andy Serkis. New stars include Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio del Toro.<\/p>\n

Fox\u2019s counter-programming foray with animated family comedy \u201cFerdinand<\/a>\u201d finished a distant second with $13.3 million at 3,621 locations in North America amid expectations of a $15 million debut. The movie is based on the children\u2019s book \u201cThe Story of\u00a0Ferdinand<\/a>\u201d and directed by Carlos Saldanha, with John Cena voicing the Spanish bull who doesn\u2019t want to fight.<\/p>\n

Disney-Pixar\u2019s fourth weekend of \u201cCoco\u201d led the rest of the pack with about $9.7 million in its fourth frame, enough to lift the animated musical to past $150 million domestically.<\/p>\n

With the holiday season getting into full swing, \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi\u201d should dominate moviegoing before a pair of new entries arrive on Dec. 20 \u2014 Sony\u2019s \u201cJumanji: Welcome to the Jungle\u201d and Fox\u2019s \u201cThe Greatest Showman.\u201d<\/p>\n
