{"id":73050,"date":"2017-12-27T20:18:09","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T18:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/?p=73050\/"},"modified":"2017-12-27T20:18:09","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T18:18:09","slug":"true-story-behind-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/en\/news-el\/entertainment\/true-story-behind-post\/","title":{"rendered":"The True Story Behind The Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe src=\"\/\/players.brightcove.net\/293884104\/SJa0Thl7_default\/index.html?videoId=5664675558001\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The feverishly debated decision behind The Washington\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u2018s 1971 publication of top-secret information in the Pentagon Papers comes to life in the new movie\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5073510\/the-post-movie-review\/\"><em>The Post<\/em><\/a>, in which Meryl Streep plays legendary publisher Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks takes on the role of the gruff but brilliant executive editor Ben Bradlee.<\/p>\n<p>As Graham, Streep plays a leader who decides to publish the incendiary information about the Vietnam War amid great pressure, in both directions, from government officials, her lawyers and her own employees.<\/p>\n<p>The papers fell into the Washington\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u2018s hands at a delicate time. The New York\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>, which first reported on the papers, had been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/vault\/issue\/1971-07-05\/spread\/40\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">temporarily banned<\/a>\u00a0from publishing the information, which exposed that the government had repeatedly lied to the public about progress in the Vietnam War. Editors at the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0had a small window of time to jump on the story. President Nixon and his administration fought hard to keep the information from going public, even taking the case to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u00a0<em>The Post<\/em>\u00a0gets right (and wrong) about the newspaper\u2019s role in the publication of the Pentagon Papers.<\/p>\n<h3>Daniel Ellsberg was working for the RAND corporation when he decided to leak the Pentagon Papers.<\/h3>\n<p>Ellsberg, played in the movie by Matthew Rhys, worked as a military analyst for the RAND corporation, where he repeatedly snuck out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/world.time.com\/2013\/06\/10\/10-notorious-leakers-and-how-they-fared\/slide\/daniel-ellsberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">classified military documents<\/a>\u00a0to photocopy over three months in 1969. He would copy the documents and return the originals the next day, and in 1971 he sent 7,000 pages exposing the government\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2013\/06\/10\/times-1971-cover-stories-on-daniel-ellsberg-and-the-pentagon-papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lies about the Vietnam War<\/a>\u00a0to the New York\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For this, Ellsberg became the first person to be prosecuted under the 1917 Espionage Act and faced 115 years in prison. Charges were dropped, however, in a mistrial when it came to light that the government had illegally spied on the whistleblower.<\/p>\n<p>Ellsberg has since gone on to become an activist decrying government secrecy. He recently published the book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ellsberg.net\/doomsday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Doomsday Machine<\/em><\/a>, a revealing account of America\u2019s nuclear program in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<h3>The Washington\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0was in the process of becoming a publicly traded company at the time of the leak.<\/h3>\n<p>Katharine Graham noted in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/12\/15\/571106581\/how-katharine-graham-defied-a-federal-judge-to-publish-the-pentagon-papers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1997 interview with NPR<\/a>\u00a0that The Washington\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0was in a vulnerable position during the time she decided to publish the Pentagon Papers because it was in the process of going public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had announced our plans and not sold the stock,\u201d Graham said. \u201cSo we were particularly liable to any kind of criminal prosecution from the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the film, this fact weighs heavily on Graham, who has taken leadership of the paper following her husband\u2019s suicide. On top of the legal risks, publishing the papers posed a potentially existential threat to the newspaper.<\/p>\n<h3>When\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0journalists received the papers, they were out of order with no page numbers.<\/h3>\n<p>As depicted in the movie,\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0reporters really did camp out in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/retropolis\/wp\/2017\/12\/23\/fact-checking-the-post-the-incredible-pentagon-papers-drama-spielberg-left-out\/?utm_term=.7b1c89e7d3cf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Bradlee\u2019s library<\/a>\u00a0to go through the papers \u2014 which were not exactly organized efficiently. The complete Pentagon Papers were declassified in 2011, making them fully available online for the first time. The Washington\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/national-security\/pentagon-papers-to-be-declassified-at-last\/2011\/06\/08\/AGA0VuOH_story.html?utm_term=.90359f0403e3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0in 2011 that the leaked versions of the papers that it and the New York\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0received were heavily redacted, incomplete or illegible.<\/p>\n<h3>Katharine Graham was hosting a party on the night she decided to publish the Papers.<\/h3>\n<p>In her 1997 memoir<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Personal_History.html?id=jkxz77hC_48C&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=kp_read_button#v=snippet&amp;q=party&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>\u00a0Personal History<\/em><\/a>, Graham wrote that she was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5069599\/katharine-graham-meryl-streep-the-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hosting a party<\/a>\u00a0for a departing employee and was in the middle of delivering a toast, just like in the movie, when she was called to the telephone to make the call on whether to publish the papers. After much debate \u2014 and, as in the film, finally realizing the decision lay with her alone \u2014 Graham said, \u201cGo go ahead, go ahead. Let\u2019s go. Let\u2019s publish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham was known for throwing great parties, attended by friends including high-ranking government officials like Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. (Whether she was wearing a gold caftan as fabulous as the one Streep sports in the movie is difficult to ascertain.)<\/p>\n<h3>The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the\u00a0<em>Post.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The Supreme Court sided with the news when it ruled in favor of the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0and the New York\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0publishing the top-secret information in the Pentagon Papers. In a six-to-three vote, the court ruled that the government did not adequately prove that it had the right to bar the newspapers from publishing the classified history of the Vietnam War on the claim that it was a national security risk.<\/p>\n<h3>President Nixon did not ban the Washington\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0from the White House after the newspaper published the Pentagon Papers.<\/h3>\n<p>While the publication of the Pentagon Papers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/retropolis\/wp\/2017\/06\/22\/like-trump-nixon-was-obsessed-with-leaks-it-led-to-watergate-and-ruin\/?utm_term=.3088d1133ee1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">angered Nixon<\/a>\u00a0after his national security adviser Henry Kissinger told him the leaks made him seem like a \u201cweakling,\u201d the former president did not ban\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u00a0reporters from the White House for reporting on them. Later, when the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em>\u2018s reporting on the Watergate scandal gained steam, Nixon began barring reporters from covering\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/complicated-history-between-press-and-presidency-180959406\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social events at the White House<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 although the journalists still had their press credentials.
