The image she\u2019s best remembered is her turn in a man\u2019s tux with top hat and white tie in Josef von Sternberg\u2019s 1930 film\u00a0<em>Morocco<\/em>. Google is remembering Marlene Dietrich\u2019s 116th birthday\u2014and her gender-defying tuxedo\u2014with today\u2019s (Dec. 27) doodle.<\/p>\n<p>Her boundary-pushing performance\u2014Dietrich, playing a cabaret singer, kisses a woman in the audience\u2014stunned and titillated audiences,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/story\/20140710-smoking-hot-the-womans-tuxedo\">according to the BBC<\/a>. Dietrich\u2019s big-screen appropriation of the men\u2019s tuxedo was a long leap at a time when women wearing trousers was still far from accepted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qzprod.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/12\/colorcorrected-7.jpeg?quality=80&amp;strip=all&amp;w=985\" alt=\"colorcorrected (7)\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The era of her widest fame included the World War II years when women stepped into factories and manufacturing to support the US war effort, events that helped set in motion the ongoing struggle for greater equality between the sexes. As the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/costumesociety.org.uk\/blog\/post\/its-a-mans-world-marlene-dietrich-and-her-cross-dressing-wardrobe\">Costume Society wrote<\/a>\u00a0wrote last year of her wardrobe, \u201cat times, Dietrich looked far better in suits than men themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was also a bisexual star when\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/history-of-gay-rights\">homosexuality was a crime<\/a>\u00a0in many jurisdictions, and elevated drag to a new level. Today\u2019s doodle was illustrated by Sasha Steinberg, who was a winner of\u00a0<em>RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race,\u00a0<\/em>performing as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sashavelour.com\/\">Sasha Velour<\/a>. \u201cDespite the pressures of the time, she followed her own course, especially in terms of politics and gender,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sasha_velour?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Velour<\/a>\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>Her film career extended into the 1970s, as did her international cabaret appearances. Decades after Dietrich\u2019s pioneered her signature look, Yves Saint Laurent designed \u201cle smoking,\u201d the first tuxedo for women. It came to symbolize \u201cfemale liberation,\u201d according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/museeyslparis.com\/en\/exhibitions-foundation\/yves-saint-laurent-smoking-forever\">statement for the 2005 exhibition Yves Saint Laurent Smoking Forever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dietrich, who died in 1992, is remembered as a symbol of liberation in various forms. After Hitler\u2019s Nazi regime took control of Germany, she became an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/05\/17\/world\/dietrich-buried-in-berlin-and-sentiment-is-mixed.html\">exile<\/a>, went to war zones to encourage American troops and traveled widely to promoting the sale of war bonds.
