Prepare yourself for the year to come with 52 highly anticipated new movies to watch in 2018.<\/h3>\n
\u201cWhy 52?\u201d That\u2019s the first question we hope gets dropped on Twitter in response to this year\u2019s list. It\u2019s one we get every year, as we\u2019ve done this now\u00a0since 2013<\/a>. The reasoning is simple: the average moviegoer sees 8.5 new movies per year. For us, that\u2019s way too low. Now, we understand that people are busy and the world is constantly falling apart these days, so expecting anyone to match pace with our staff critics (who see 200-400 new movies per year) is insane. But one per week? That\u2019s doable. We believe in you. That\u2019s why our list has 52 entries. The equivalent of one film per week, listed in chronological order, that can serve as your roadmap to the year in film.<\/p>\n Of course, no list is perfect. We hope not to have to answer the \u201cWhy didn\u2019t\u00a0Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom<\/em>\u00a0make this list?\u201d That should be obvious at this point. But we fully recognize that there will be films in 2018 that come out of nowhere. Notably absent from\u00a0our 2017 most anticipated list<\/a>\u00a0were films such as\u00a0Lady Bird<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Call Me By Your Name<\/em>. Unless you\u2019re just going to list every movie listed for a particular year on IMDB, you\u2019ll never get them all. Even then you still might not nail it, as several of the films on last year\u2019s list (Annihilation, The Commuter,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Mute<\/em>) were also on last year\u2019s list. We\u2019re aware of our limitations, so we stick to the films we are confident will capture our attention this coming year.<\/p>\n These 52 feel like the best bets.<\/p>\n James Wan\u2019s\u00a0Insidious<\/em>\u00a0franchise may not have the cache or reach of his\u00a0Conjuring<\/em>\u00a0films, but he and Leigh Whannell have delivered more than a few fantastically scary set-pieces and scenes over the previous three installments. The fourth film sees a new butt in the director\u2019s chair with Adam Robitel, but rather than be a cause for concern it\u2019s actually a reason for horror fans to rejoice as his last feature was the terrifically creepy\u00a0The Taking of Deborah Logan<\/em>. A certain third-act scene from that film sits among the most unsettling of 2014, so I\u2019ll happily follow him into a whole new nightmare. \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/em><\/p>\n The more things change the more they stay the same, and by that I mean\u00a0Liam Neeson<\/strong>\u00a0has once again joined forces with\u00a0Jaume Collet-Serra<\/strong>\u00a0(Unknown<\/em>,\u00a0Non-Stop<\/em>,\u00a0Run All Night<\/em>) who\u2019s perhaps even better known now for that weird shark movie with Blake Lively that a lot of people liked. Per the trailer,\u00a0The Commuter<\/em>\u00a0is basically the perfect knockoff\u00a0Non-Stop<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 Neeson\u2019s trapped in a mode of transport, somebody on there knows what\u2019s up, and it\u2019s a game of Clue between a m\u00e9nage of pained faces. And after I finally catch that very serious and must-see movie about fabric that P.T Anderson has cooked up, I think I\u2019ll respond the conductor calling me to sneak onto the Neeson train for an hour and a half to watch ol\u2019 Irish guts yell dramatically in a phone. Never, never, never, never change, keep messing with trains, cause trains pay. \u2013\u00a0Andrew Karpan<\/em><\/p>\n Taraji P. Henson<\/strong>\u00a0plays the title role in\u00a0London Has Fallen<\/em>\u00a0director Babak Najafi\u2019s action-thriller about a hit-woman under the payroll of a Boston crime family. When one of her jobs goes wrong, Mary accidentally orphans a young boy changing both of their lives. Set for a January release,\u00a0Proud Mary<\/em>\u00a0also stars Danny Glover, Billy Brown, and Jahi Di\u2019Allo Winston as the orphaned boy. \u2013\u00a0Farah Cheded<\/em><\/p>\n 2015\u2019s\u00a0The Scorch Trials<\/em>\u00a0was a surprising step up from the franchise\u2019s fairly flat first entry and delivered one of that year\u2019s best action films on top of a fun, twisty storyline. It elevated the\u00a0Maze Runner<\/em>\u00a0films well above most other dystopian YA adventures, and with the same principal cast and crew returning for part three I\u2019m hoping for more thrilling set-pieces, solid performances, and entertaining narrative beats. \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/em><\/p>\n Directed by\u00a0Michael and Peter Spierig<\/strong>, this looks likes it\u2019s going to be a chilling ghost story anchored by\u00a0Helen Mirren<\/strong>\u2019s performance as Sara Winchester, a wealthy widow driven by grief, madness or ghosts (or all the above) to endlessly renovate her home. I\u2019ve been fascinated with the Winchester house since I was a kid as there is something about the nonsensical mansion that piques my interest. It feels unsettling when you are on the premises, and I can\u2019t decide whether it\u2019s the surrealist construction or the fact it\u2019s allegedly haunted as they kind of play off each other.\u00a0Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built<\/em>\u00a0looks to be a bit of spooky mayhem and scares constructed to unsettle your sense of place. \u2013\u00a0Francesca Fau<\/em><\/p>\n T\u2019Challa, the Black Panther, ruler of the unconquerable nation of Wakanda and King of the Dead. Ten years ago, when Sam Jackson\u2019s Nick Fury invited Robert Downey Jr\u2019s Tony Stark into the Avengers Initiative, I teetered at the possibilities. However, I never imagined that the films would actually succeed in bringing a character as obscure, or downright mishandled in the comics, to the blockbuster arena. Why should I have faith? I had found ways to appreciate previous awkward adaptations of\u00a0The Punisher<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0X-Men<\/em>, but they rarely embraced their source material, and often appeared to apologize for their origins. By embracing the farthest reaches of their universe, Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige changed everything. T\u2019Challa can and will be as recognizable as Clark Kent.\u00a0Ryan Coogler<\/strong>is the perfect man to bring Black Panther to the screen. As he showed in\u00a0Creed<\/em>, Coogler will reach deep into the mythology of his franchise, geek out, and still manage to concoct something wholly original. With cinematographer Rachel Morrison (Mudbound<\/em>,\u00a0Fruitvale Station<\/em>) and costume designer Ruth E. Carter (Selma<\/em>,\u00a0Malcom X<\/em>) on board, the first trailers have already declared\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>\u00a0to be the most visually striking entry in the MCU. As king,\u00a0Chadwick Boseman<\/strong>\u00a0leads a cast of titanic talent that could conceivably revolutionize pop culture representation.\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>\u00a0is more than just another link in the MCUs chain of films, it offers genuine hope for the future. \u2013\u00a0Brad Gullickson<\/em><\/p>\n Based on the first book of\u00a0Jeff VanderMeer<\/strong>\u2019s Southern Reach Trilogy,\u00a0Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0promises to be a lush and creepy showing. The trailers hint that it might be a little more in-your-face scary than the deliberately obscure novels, but with a strong cast (Natalie Portman<\/strong>,\u00a0Jennifer Jason Leigh<\/strong>,\u00a0Tessa Thompson<\/strong>,\u00a0Oscar Isaac<\/strong>\u2026) and a richly spooky setting, it\u2019ll likely be good no matter what. Having read the trilogy, I\u2019m so excited to see how this adaptation goes. \u2013\u00a0Liz Baessler<\/em><\/p>\n It\u2019s Russia vs USA in the game of spies.\u00a0Jennifer Lawrence<\/strong>\u00a0plays ballerina turned Russian spy Dominika Egorova who\u2019s recruited the Sparrow School, a Russian intelligence service that trains young women to use their bodies as weapons and to get whatever they need at all costs. The novel is a very interesting cat and mouse game between the agents. Interestingly enough, Lawrence\u2019s ex-boyfriend, Darren Aronofsky, was originally attached to direct the feature before it landed with her\u00a0Hunger Games<\/em>\u00a0director,\u00a0Francis Lawrence<\/strong>\u00a0(I Am Legend<\/em>). \u2013\u00a0Max Covill<\/em><\/p>\n David Oyelowo<\/strong>,\u00a0Charlize Theron<\/strong>, and\u00a0Joel Edgerton<\/strong>\u00a0are more than enough reason to want to dive into this blackly comic thriller, but it also marks the first feature from director Nash Edgerton since 2008\u2019s nifty little suspense tale,\u00a0The Square<\/em>. All of that should be more than enough to outweigh the presence of Sharlto Copley. \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/em><\/p>\n 2011\u2019s\u00a0The Intouchables<\/i>\u00a0is a somewhat straightforward tale from France of a wealthy but unhealthy white man who forms a friendship with the black man hired as his caretaker. It shouldn\u2019t work really, but it does a terrific job with its characters and the empathy that builds between them. This is the inevitable American remake, and while it can still go either way the pairing of\u00a0Bryan Cranston<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Kevin Hart<\/strong>\u00a0holds promise. \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/i><\/p>\n There\u2019s a lot of buzz around\u00a0Ava DuVernay<\/strong>\u2019s adaptation of\u00a0Madeleine L\u2019Engle<\/strong>\u2019s beloved 1962 children\u2019s book. (If you haven\u2019t noticed the buzz, start with the cover of this week\u2019s Time Magazine). As the biggest-budget live-action film to be directed by a woman of color, and with a female-driven, racially diverse cast, the buzz is good and deserved. But all that aside, it looks awesome.\u00a0Mindy Kaling<\/strong>,\u00a0Reese Witherspoon<\/strong>, and\u00a0Oprah Winfrey<\/strong>\u00a0as Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which are sure to be amazing, and Storm Reid, at only 14, looks like she\u2019s holding her own in the trailer. I for one am rereading my childhood copy of the book in excited anticipation. \u2013\u00a0Liz Baessler<\/em><\/p>\n Video game adaptations always unease critics and audiences alike, but as someone who spent many hours playing\u00a0Tomb Raider<\/em>\u00a0in its various sequels and reboots I am more than ready for this take on Lara Croft. Based on the 2013 reboot of the gaming franchise this film is about a younger, greener Croft venturing out to finish what her father started. It\u2019s a reboot and an origin story all in one. While that\u2019s a tall order for any film, let alone a video game adaptation, I have the utmost faith in\u00a0The Wave<\/em>\u00a0director\u00a0Roar Uthaug<\/strong>. Furthermore, if anyone new is going to breath live-action life into this character it\u2019s\u00a0Alicia Vikander<\/strong>. Some early posters had people shaking their heads, but all I needed to know that Vikander was right for this is her competently toting duel pistols and watching her tackle some action activities with gusto. If this is the start of a video game cinematic universe, as promised by producer Adrian Askarieh, my ever-optimistic heart is predicting it will be a good one. \u2013\u00a0Francesca Fau<\/em><\/p>\n Little is known about\u00a0Steven Soderbergh<\/b>\u2019s latest aside from it was shot on an iPhone and stars\u00a0The Crown<\/i>\u2019s\u00a0Claire Foy<\/b>. Those two things cancel each other out in my eyes leaving us once again in the dark, but Soderbergh\u2019s a talent whose films are always worth watching at least once. Okay fine, I turned off\u00a0Bubble<\/i>\u00a0twenty minutes in, but my point stands in general! \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/i><\/p>\n Since the credits rolled on my first viewing of\u00a0Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/em>\u00a0I\u2019ve been itching for\u00a0Wes Anderson<\/strong>\u2019s next foray into stop-motion animation.\u00a0Isle of Dogs<\/em>\u00a0is therefore at the top of my list in 2018. I cannot wait to dive into a meticulously crafted pastel world where a little boy searches for his dog in a futuristic Japan.\u00a0Isle of Dogs<\/em>\u00a0promises to be a whimsical and enchanting storybook come to life with a stellar voice cast including\u00a0Ken Watanabe<\/strong>,\u00a0Bryan Cranston<\/strong>,\u00a0Edward Norton<\/strong>,\u00a0Greta Gerwig<\/strong>,\u00a0Bill Murray<\/strong>,\u00a0Jeff Goldblum<\/strong>, and\u00a0F. Murray Abraham<\/strong>\u00a0among many others. (Honestly, I can\u2019t tell if this is the cast or my fantasy dinner party guest list.)\u00a0Isle of Dogs<\/em>\u00a0is going to be a fun time at the movies this year and I am so, so ready. \u2013\u00a0Francesca Fau<\/em><\/p>\n A new\u00a0Steven Spielberg<\/strong>\u00a0film would get anyone excited, but what if I told you this one was based off one of the best page-turners around?\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em>\u00a0gets knocked around a lot for its incessant usage of pop culture, but honestly, that\u2019s half the fun. The story is about Wade Watts, a young man who\u2019s deep into the online world of OASIS which has taken the place of much of society. Now Wade has a chance to become the administrator of that world if he can only find the creators\u2019 Easter Eggs. It\u2019s a futuristic Willy Wonka mixed with a whole lot of pop culture. \u2013\u00a0Max Covill<\/em><\/p>\n John Krasinski<\/strong>\u00a0hasn\u2019t exactly set the world ablaze with his previous directorial efforts, but his third film looks to dip into the horror genre in fascinating ways. He stars alongside\u00a0Emily Blunt<\/strong>\u00a0as a couple attempting to elude \u201csomething\u201d deadly that finds its prey through sound. The initial teaser is fantastic, and it combined with these two leads is enough to leave me hooked and hopeful that the monstrous threat is an actual monster (he said, throwing shade at\u00a0It Comes at Night<\/em>). \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/em><\/p>\n Jason Reitman<\/b>\u00a0burst onto the scene in 2005 and just got better and better until he peaked with 2011\u2019s brilliant\u00a0Young Adult<\/i>. It\u2019s been a downhill slide with the two films since, but I\u2019m thinking he\u2019s ready to shine again. His latest reunites him with\u00a0Charlize Theron<\/b>\u00a0and writer\u00a0Diablo Cody<\/b>\u00a0for a tale of motherhood, and this is a power trio to believe in. \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/i><\/p>\n I\u2019m not the biggest fan of\u00a0Cloverfield<\/em>\u00a0as despite my love of monster movies it\u2019s a found footage suck fest. Bland characters, nonsensical camera use, and minimal wonder make for a dull time. The barely related follow-up,\u00a010 Cloverfield Lane<\/em>, is wholly my jam with terrific suspense, strong performances, and a killer ending. What I\u2019m saying is who the hell knows what to expect with the third film as it\u2019s once again a standalone tale that\u2019s been massaged into this shared universe. We do know it stars\u00a0Daniel Br\u00fchl, Elizabeth Debicki, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, though, and that trio along with its rumored title (The God Particle<\/em>) are more than enough to have us excited to discover its secrets while sitting in a darkened theater. \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/em><\/p>\n It\u2019s all been building to this.\u00a0Joss Whedon<\/strong>\u00a0teed up a massive cosmic promise to fanboys when he had the mad titan, Thanos, turn his smile towards them during\u00a0The Avengers<\/em>\u2019 mid-credits stinger. Many may have scratched their heads at the sight of that purple, bumpy chin, but for those in the know it was a pledge to take Earth\u2019s Mightiest Heroes to the final frontier. Since then we\u2019ve seen Rocket Raccoon, the astral plane, and the mirror dimension. Wanna get nuts? Let\u2019s get nuts. And yet\u2026has Thanos even risen from his chair? Do we have any reason to fear him? As a comic book obsessive, currently re-reading Jonathan Hickman\u2019s epic Infinity saga, I know that Thanos could be another game-changer for the MCU. He\u2019s a beast, a homicidal nightmare. Forget the memes, Josh Brolin\u2019s ultimate bad will not fall into the long line of wonky CG villains under the guidance of the Russo Brothers. These guys delivered two of the franchise\u2019s strongest entries, juggling myriad characters and plot points, and I believe they\u2019ll succeed on that titanic tease from 2012. \u2013\u00a0Brad Gullickson<\/em><\/p>\n Do we need a Han Solo origin story or even a young Han Solo adventure? No. But we\u2019re getting one, and it will make a ton of money, and then we\u2019ll get even more unnecessary prequels to keep this cash train moving through space ad nauseam. All of that said,\u00a0Ron Howard<\/b>\u00a0has made some good movies, and this cast is pretty killer, so sure\u2026 we\u2019re looking forward to it. \u2013\u00a0Rob Hunter<\/i><\/p>\n Ryan Reynolds<\/strong>\u00a0was born to play the Merc with the mouth. His venom-soaked delivery of razor-sharp one-liners is unmatched. Like most superhero sequels we\u2019re still getting our favorites back including the return of Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus, but newcomers Zazie Beats as Domino and Josh Brolin as Cable shake things up. Also, did I mention\u00a0how awesome the trailer looked<\/a>? Anyone of those shots in the Bob Ross-themed trailer could have been on One Perfect Shot.
