One of the biggest\u00a0surprises<\/a>\u00a0on Oscar-nominations morning was the omission of\u00a0James Franco.<\/strong>\u00a0The multi-hyphenate, who directed and starred in the critically lauded comedy\u00a0The Disaster Artist,<\/em>\u00a0was well on track to get a best-actor nod for his kooky portrayal of cult filmmaker\u00a0Tommy Wiseau.<\/strong>\u00a0But just days before Oscar voting wrapped up, allegations of inappropriate and sexually exploitative behavior\u00a0surfaced against Franco<\/a>, derailing his awards-season campaign. (Franco, via his attorney\u00a0Michael Plonsker,<\/strong>\u00a0denied the accusations.) According to at least one source in the know, though, Franco is content with the Academy\u2019s decision not to nominate him.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames is disappointed in not getting an Oscar nomination, but also very understanding and somewhat relieved,\u201d an unnamed source told\u00a0E! News<\/em><\/a>\u00a0following the announcement. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t want it to look like the snub is correlated with the allegations against him.\u201d (Oscar-nomination voting opened January 5 and closed January 12; the first public allegations against Franco came January 7, the night of the Golden Globes.)<\/p>\n

The source added that Franco is currently \u201ctrying to get through this rocky patch and hopes everything will blow over appropriately. He is really leaning on his family right now and trying to stay under the radar as much as possible.\u201d Per\u00a0TMZ<\/a>, the actor has also been out and about in Hollywood, recently grabbing lunch with comedian\u00a0Jeff Garlin.<\/strong>\u00a0Representatives for Franco have not yet responded to\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

Before the\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/em>\u00a0published details of the allegations against him on January 11, Franco tried taking a more public route toward damage control. After murmurs about his alleged behavior took over social media during the Globes (where Franco won best actor), he spoke openly about the rumors in a\u00a0late-night interview<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0Stephen Colbert.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI pride myself on taking responsibility for things that I\u2019ve done,\u201d Franco said. \u201cI have to do that to maintain my well-being. I do it whenever I know that there is something wrong or needs to be changed. I make it a point to do it. The things that I heard that were on Twitter are not accurate, but I completely support people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn\u2019t have a voice for so long. So I don\u2019t want to shut them down in any way. It\u2019s, I think, a good thing, and I support it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also spoke about\u00a0Ally Sheedy,<\/strong>\u00a0who\u00a0tweeted about Franco<\/a>\u00a0on Globes night, vaguely insinuating that he had done something sinister. \u201cI have no idea what I did to Ally Sheedy,\u201d Franco said. \u201cI directed her in a play Off-Broadway. I had nothing but a great time with her. Total respect for her. I have no idea why she was upset. She took the tweet down. I don\u2019t know. I can\u2019t speak for her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, Franco has kept a low profile, but the stories about him have only grown louder. Two\u00a0of his accusers<\/a>\u2014Violet Paley<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Sarah Tither-Kaplan<\/strong>\u2014spoke to\u00a0Good Morning America<\/em>\u00a0on Oscar-nominations morning, while\u00a0Scarlett Johansson<\/strong>\u00a0called him out\u00a0during a speech<\/a>\u00a0at the second Women\u2019s March after the nominations were revealed. \u201cI want my pin back,\u201d she declared, referencing the Time\u2019s Up pin he wore to the Globes. Meanwhile, Franco\u2019s sister-in-law,\u00a0Alison Brie,<\/strong>\u00a0gave this\u00a0diplomatic response<\/a>\u00a0when asked about his situation at the SAG Awards on Sunday: \u201cI obviously support my family and not everything reported has been fully accurate. But of course now is a time for listening and that\u2019s what we\u2019re all trying to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
