They just keep coming and coming.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/i>universe shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon (for better or worse) as Disney and Lucasfilm have just unveiled that the minds behind HBO\u2019s epic\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/i>\u2014 David Benioff and D.B. Weiss \u2014 have been hired to write and produce a new series of films set in a galaxy far, far away.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the summer of 1997 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we\u2019ve been dreaming of it ever since,\u201d Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement via\u00a0Entertainment Weekly<\/a>. \u201cWe are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/i>is complete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This series of films are not the same as the\u00a0series<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0Star Wars: The Last Jedi\u00a0<\/i><\/a>director Rian Johnson will be developing in the future. That\u2019s right, we\u2019ve got two separate spin-off series on the way \u2014 along with\u00a0Episode IX<\/a>,\u00a0Solo: A Star Wars Story\u00a0<\/a><\/i>and a handful of other one-offs and spinoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDavid and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,\u201d said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, via\u00a0Entertainment Weekly<\/a>. \u201cTheir command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new group and boldly push\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/i>in ways I find incredibly exciting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/i>, Benioff has also written\u00a025th Hour, Troy, The Kite Runner,\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0X-Men Origins: Wolverine\u00a0<\/i>(we won\u2019t hold that last one against him, though). Weiss has almost strictly worked on\u00a0Game of Thrones.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m of two different mindsets on this news. On one hand,\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/i>is about to become over-exposed to the point of exhaustion. The episodic trilogy is great and all, but this\u2026.this seems like a lot of\u00a0Star Wars.\u00a0<\/i>If we spend too much time in this galaxy, that magical grip the world has on us begins to fade. I\u2019m of the opinion that even making a Han Solo spinoff was unnecessary \u2014 but having two separate\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/i>series after that? That might be too much.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s also disappointing that, with all these announcements, Disney has mostly failed to add some diversity into their directors. Fans have long been clamoring for Ava DuVernay to be handed a\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/i>film, and this seems like it could have been the perfect opportunity. Instead, it ends up going to two more white guys (not white walkers, mind you).<\/span><\/p>\n

That being said, we\u2019ve all seen\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/i>and know how exciting of a show it is. The idea that\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/i>could get a similar treatment \u2014 one with all kinds of mythology and climatic battle scenes \u2014 is an intriguing one, making it understandable why Kennedy would have gone after Benioff and Weiss.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no release date for these new\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/i>films as of yet, but it will likely be after\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/i>wraps their\u00a0final<\/a>\u00a0season in\u00a02019<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
