All Marvel Cinematic Universe movies these days are blockbusters, but they don\u2019t usually feel like\u00a0events<\/em>. As excited as people may have been for\u00a0The Avengers\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>, none of those films were preemptively held up as turning points for world cinema.\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>, on the other hand, is a landmark: The first superhero movie with an almost entirely black cast, and one that doesn\u2019t shy away from difficult questions about race and nationality.<\/p>\n

People have been going nuts for this picture for years at this point, so there\u2019s a good chance that, even if you don\u2019t usually watch spandex flicks, you\u2019ll want to see whether it lives up to expectations. If you haven\u2019t viewed all of the 17 (!) preceding Marvel Cinematic Universe installments, or if you feel like you\u2019ve forgotten what you saw within them, you may feel intimidated by the prospect of going into this sucker. Fear not, fellow traveler: We\u2019ll get you up to speed on the bare essentials of what you need to know about Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) before you enter the theater.<\/p>\n

The MCU Background<\/strong>
\nLucky for you, the Panther \u2014 real name T\u2019Challa \u2014 has only appeared in a single movie prior to this one: 2016\u2019s\u00a0Captain America: Civil War<\/em>. If you watch that, you should be fine. What, you don\u2019t have two hours and 45 minutes to spare? Fine, we\u2019ll go through the parts that are relevant for\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>.\u00a0Civil War<\/em>\u00a0follows a team of super-soldiers known as the Avengers and centers around a feud between their leaders, Tony Stark\/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers\/Captain America (Chris Evans), that splits the squadron in half.<\/p>\n

During a fight against super-terrorists in Lagos, Nigeria, the Avengers inadvertently cause the deaths of some civilians, including 11 citizens of Wakanda. That\u2019s a key term to remember, as it\u2019s the fictional African country that T\u2019Challa comes from. It\u2019s located in East Africa, right near the intersection of real-life Uganda and Kenya. It\u2019s known to the world as a reclusive, third-world backwater with a wealthy monarchy \u2014 but that\u2019s just the image the Wakandans want to spread to the world. In reality, they\u2019re secretly a technologically advanced civilization the likes of which cannot be seen anywhere in the world, real or fictional. The rest of the planet just thinks they\u2019re a source of a rare material called vibranium.<\/p>\n

Meet T\u2019Challa, T\u2019Chaka, and Klaue<\/strong>
\nAfter the lethal accident in Lagos, Wakandan king T\u2019Chaka (John Kani) appears before the U.N. and condemns not only the terrorists, but also the Avengers. The governments of the world come together to draft the Sokovia Accords, an agreement that would put the Avengers under the control of an international panel. The Avengers wring their hands over what to do: Iron Man thinks the accords are a decent idea, Captain America opposes them, and the various team members fall on either side. They bide their time, uncertain of their future.<\/p>\n

A U.N. meeting is held in Vienna to ratify the accords. It is there that we meet handsome T\u2019Challa, son of T\u2019Chaka and prince of Wakanda. He converses with one of the pro-accord Avengers, Natasha Romanoff\/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and tells her he approves of the accords, but doesn\u2019t like the bureaucratic politics of the U.N.: \u201cTwo people in a room can get more done than a hundred,\u201d as he puts it. T\u2019Chaka joins their conversation, accepts Natasha\u2019s apologies for Lagos, and expresses frustration that Captain America wouldn\u2019t come to the meeting. She walks away and T\u2019Chaka and T\u2019Challa have a sweet moment where the elder tells the younger that he\u2019s good at diplomacy and tenderly touches his son\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

Moments later, T\u2019Chaka briefly reminds the assemblage of an occurrence from the previous Avengers movie, 2015\u2019s\u00a0Avengers: Age of Ultron<\/em>. In that picture, we met sinister arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), who will show up in\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>. In\u00a0Age of Ultron<\/em>, Klaue sold stolen vibranium (how he managed to get it from Wakanda wasn\u2019t explained) to an evil robot named Ultron. The two of them got into a fight in which Klaue lost an arm and ran away. Ultron used the vibranium as part of his villainous plot and, at\u00a0Civil War<\/em>\u2019s U.N. gathering, T\u2019Chaka says the Wakandans regret their mineral\u2019s inadvertent role in evildoing.<\/p>\n

RIP T\u2019Chaka<\/strong>
\n<\/strong>T\u2019Chaka saw the Ultron incident as a wake-up call about the need to do good in the world, and plans to take Wakanda out of the shadows and make it more of a part of the world community. Just as T\u2019Chaka is telling the audience that Wakanda is proud to extend its hand in peace, a bomb blows up the building and kills him. T\u2019Challa cradles his father\u2019s dead body and weeps. The police suspect the culprit is Captain America\u2019s friend and former partner, a super-soldier named Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Bucky was a brainwashed assassin for decades and is trying to overcome his programming, but the world at large still thinks of him as a criminal\u00a0\u2014 and T\u2019Challa is inclined to agree.<\/p>\n

T\u2019Challa Hunts<\/strong>
\nAfter the bombing, T\u2019Challa and Natasha converse once again. He holds his father\u2019s ring and tells Nat that, in his culture, \u201cdeath is not the end. It\u2019s more of a stepping-off point.\u201d He talks about the Wakandan gods (derived from ancient Egyptian religion) Bast and Sekhmet. Nat says Bucky will be tracked down by the authorities, but T\u2019Challa gets up and walks away, saying, \u201cI\u2019ll kill him myself.\u201d He finds Bucky in Bucharest a little while later and, clad in a high-tech black costume, fights the runaway accused terrorist with aplomb. Cap shows up during the fight in order to save Bucky from the Panther (whose identity he as of then doesn\u2019t know). The authorities show up, stop the fight, arrest everyone,\u00a0and the Panther unmasks to reveal himself as T\u2019Challa.<\/p>\n

While riding in an armored car with Cap, T\u2019Challa says the mantle of the Black Panther has been held to protect Wakanda for generations. He says he\u2019s been the Black Panther for a while, but with T\u2019Chaka dead, he now has to be the king of Wakanda, too. At a secure facility, everyone meets government operative Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), who\u2019s helping to lead the task force that ensnares rogue superhumans. T\u2019Challa is given an office instead of a cell, but told to stay cooperative. Bucky breaks out and everyone chases after him, including T\u2019Challa, but he gets away.<\/p>\n

The Big Fight and Its Aftermath<\/strong>
\nEventually, all the Avengers, pro- and anti-accord alike, find themselves at an airport in Leipzig, and T\u2019Challa shows up to fight on the pro side. They all tussle for a while, but Cap and Bucky once again escape T\u2019Challa\u2019s claws. He and Iron Man track the pair down in Siberia and go after them yet again. However, they soon find out that the bombing was done by a man named Zemo (Daniel Br\u00fchl), who schemed to turn all the heroes against one another. T\u2019Challa confronts Zemo on a cliff and they have a calm talk about how vengeance can make people do terrible things. In that moment, T\u2019Challa realizes he needs to let go of his vendetta against Bucky, especially given that he now knows the latter didn\u2019t kill T\u2019Chaka. He prevents Zemo from committing suicide and carts him off to prison.<\/p>\n

However, he\u2019s not\u00a0entirely<\/em>\u00a0on the side of law and order. Cap and Bucky are still fugitives, and T\u2019Challa helps them escape to Wakanda, where he puts Bucky into an induced coma until a cure can be found for his mind control. \u201cYour friend and my father,\u201d he tells Cap, \u201cthey were both victims. If I can help one of them find peace \u2026\u201d Cap tells T\u2019Challa, \u201cY\u2019know, if they find out he\u2019s here, they\u2019ll come for him.\u201d T\u2019Challa says, \u201cLet them try\u201d while he gazes at a statue of a \u2026 black panther. Y\u2019know, like the movie he\u2019s about to be in. And now you\u2019re ready to hop into your tightest catsuit and slink into the cineplex like the jungle cat you know you really are.<\/p>\n
