Following the change, skaters started to set their routines to songs like Ed Sheeran\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4zqijqa4Fm0\">\u00a0\u201cGive Me Love\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5FjZDgP1mCA\">\u00a0\u201cBlack Betty\u201d\u00a0<\/a>from Ram Jam. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PV8XZe7iVqc\">performance by Jimmy Ma\u00a0<\/a>went viral when he took to the ice with a shotgun spin and DJ Snake and Lil Jon\u2019s super-catchy club mix \u201cTurn Down for What\u201d at this year\u2019s U.S. Championships. Ma didn\u2019t make it to this year\u2019s Winter Olympics, but he did\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/crossthefingers\/status\/949130221747290112\">win over<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/crossthefingers\/status\/949130221747290112\">the crowd<\/a>. But because we know you still have questions about who gets to play what when and for how long, we\u2019ve broken down everything you need to know about figure-skating music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdnmkof3001f3b6913i2zbdy@published\" data-word-count=\"90\"><strong>A rule change now allows figure skaters to use music with lyrics\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThe International Skating Union\u2019s (ISU) decision to allow music with lyrics was taken way back in 2012, but the change only came into effect after the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. The new rules now also allow single skaters and pairs to use music with lyrics and vocals in their programs \u2014 in the past, this led to an automatic deduction of points. Even if the music had no lyrics, but did contain vocals, skaters were still penalized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdqa15u8001s3b69o4ghtbpp@published\" data-word-count=\"120\"><strong>The music rules for ice dancing changed a decade ago<\/strong><br \/>\nIce dancing has allowed music with lyrics since the 1997\u20131998 season. Competitors are, however, a bit restricted in their choice: For the short program, the ISU picks a different type of dance every season, and the music choices have to complement the type of dance. For the Pyeongchang Olympics, the ISU chose Latin American rhythms that include the rhumba, salsa, and the cha-cha. Skaters have to give expression to the rhythm and feeling of the music, as well as show\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pyeongchang2018.com\/en\/game-time\/results\/OWG2018\/resOWG2018\/pdf\/OWG2018\/FSK\/OWG2018_DT_BCK__FSK-------------------------------_1263_ENG.pdf\">finesse<\/a>. According to the rule book, this partly refers to \u201cpersonal ways of bringing subtle variations to the intensity, tempo and dynamics of the music made by the composer and\/or musician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdqa0h29001f3b69pa0ww6e1@published\" data-word-count=\"69\"><strong>The International Skating Union\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isu.org\/isu-statutes-constitution-regulations-technical\/special-regulations-and-technical-rules\/52-2016-special-regulation-sandp-and-ice-dance-and-technical-rules-sandp-and-id-final\/file\"><strong>regulations<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0make no mention of whether explicit lyrics are allowed<\/strong><br \/>\nGuess everyone\u2019s cool with a li\u2019l Lil Wayne then? Canada\u2019s Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford\u2019s winning performance in the team free skate at this year\u2019s Olympics, for instance,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/pop\/8099107\/adele-olympics-figure-skating-meagan-duhamel-eric-radford-canada\">was set to Adele\u2019s \u201cHometown Glory.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The song includes an expletive in the chorus (\u201cShows that we ain\u2019t gonna stand shit\u201d) and was broadcast as is on NBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdvx12cb00173b69lsz0wx5x@published\" data-word-count=\"49\"><strong>There is no mention of any restrictions on original music either<\/strong><br \/>\nBefore skating to Rihanna\u2019s \u201cDiamonds\u201d in Japan last year, Adam Rippon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pW5bjCXSnhg\">sang a cover of the song<\/a>. Rippon was planning on skating to a recorded version of his cover at the Olympics this year, but ultimately decided against it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdvwd50w000z3b69myvtlx1f@published\" data-word-count=\"103\"><strong>The music isn\u2019t free<\/strong><br \/>\nAs the New York<em>\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/14\/arts\/music\/olympics-figure-skating-songs-copyrights.html?mtrref=t.co&amp;mtrref=undefined\">reports<\/a>, artists are afforded royalties that are funded by the standard licensing fees that broadcasters pay to use music. For a live event like the Olympics, additional permissions aren\u2019t needed to be able to use the song as it is covered by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2018\/02\/16\/business\/beatles-beyonce-now-part-olympic-figure-skating-who-pays\">blanket performing rights<\/a>\u00a0that allow its use in a commercial, public setting. It works a little bit differently than, say, when a Beyonc\u00e9 song is used in a TV show. Then permission to use the song has to be brokered ahead of time and fees negotiated for what is called a synchronization licence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdq9p1i9001g3b690g32y5xa@published\" data-word-count=\"108\"><strong>The time limits for performances stay the same for the skating events<\/strong><br \/>\nThe music-rule change has no effect on the allowed duration of performances. These differ according to event. For men, women and pairs, the time limit for the short program is two minutes and 50 seconds. Women\u2019s free skate is capped at four minutes, while men\u2019s and pairs free skate is limited to four minutes and 30 seconds. The time limit for ice dance is two minutes and 50 seconds for the short dance and four minutes for the free dance. For all the events, a leeway of ten seconds more or less than the limit is given.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdqaclad00273b69i8svecb3@published\" data-word-count=\"143\"><strong>Figure skaters\u2019 choice of music forms part of the Program Component Score<\/strong><br \/>\nThe scores for both the short program and the free skate are calculated by adding the Technical Elements Score (the difficulty and execution of, for instance, a skater\u2019s footwork and jumps) and the Program Component Score (artistry and presentation) of each routine together. Music plays a role especially in the latter\u2019s focus on the interpretation of the music\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pyeongchang2018.com\/en\/game-time\/results\/OWG2018\/resOWG2018\/pdf\/OWG2018\/FSK\/OWG2018_DT_BCK__FSK-------------------------------_1263_ENG.pdf\">\u201cphysically, emotionally and intellectually as they deliver the intent of the music and composition.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The composition element of this is about the choreography of the performance \u2014 the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pyeongchang2018.com\/en\/game-time\/results\/OWG2018\/resOWG2018\/pdf\/OWG2018\/FSK\/OWG2018_DT_BCK__FSK-------------------------------_1263_ENG.pdf\">\u00a0\u201coriginal arrangement\u201d<\/a>\u00a0of different movements to the music form part of the scoring process, as well as the idea, concept, vision, and mood as it relates to the music. An overall winner is determined by adding the scores of the short program and the free skate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdqbr0b1001b3b69z3v2zqyz@published\" data-word-count=\"94\"><strong>There is no rule prohibiting skaters from choosing the same songs<\/strong><br \/>\nThis has led to a lot of overlap and quite a few \u201cWho Wore It Better?\u201d situations since figure skating\u2019s introduction to the Olympics in 1908. This year is no exception \u2014 the\u00a0<em>Moulin Rouge<\/em>\u00a0soundtrack is the firm favorite and has even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/02\/2018-olympic-ice-skating-increases-moulin-rouge-music-sales.html\">boosted its sales<\/a>\u00a0on iTunes. Canada\u2019s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, American Vincent Zhou, and pair skaters Alexa Scimeca-Knierim and Chris Knierim, as well as Michael Christian Martinez from the Philippines and Australia\u2019s Kailani Craine, all included it in their programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdnmn9k9001x3b69u5ni72hd@published\" data-word-count=\"85\"><strong>The music-rule change came as interest in the sport dwindled\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/19\/sports\/olympics\/rhapsody-in-blue-or-rap-skating-will-add-vocals.html\">The New York\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>previously reported that there were multiple past attempts to upend the rule, but it took years before the ISU approved the change with a two-thirds majority, motivated in part by low ratings and diminishing interest among kids to take up the sport. Let\u2019s face it: The majority of kids aren\u2019t just randomly listening to Tchaikovsky \u2014 music with lyrics and popular songs make the sport more relatable to a younger audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdqbhqtf002m3b69pbsz9cqj@published\" data-word-count=\"154\"><strong>Despite the change, classical music and soundtracks are still the most popular choice among figure skaters<\/strong><br \/>\nAn analysis by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/graphics\/music-in-figure-skating\/\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>\u00a0showed that classical music and soundtracks are still top choices for American contenders. Ma seems to think that a possible negative reaction from the judges may play a role in the continued preference for golden oldies and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ma_jimmy\/status\/949851791436390400\">tweeted<\/a>that his choice of music was \u201ctoo intense for the judges.\u201d The use of classical music in the current season, however, dropped to 25 percent from 47 percent in the 2009\u20132010 season. Rock and pop choices among American skaters have steadily increased, with more than 20 songs being used\u00a0this season. In this year\u2019s Olympics, the Canadian team chose the most rock and pop songs. Skaters also often switch between genres for their performances, sometimes performing to a classical number in the long program and then to a more upbeat song in their short program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cjdnmnn5b00273b69ui3e31ye@published\" data-word-count=\"109\"><strong>The music choices at the Pyeongchang Olympics include everything from C\u00e9line Dion to heavy-metal band Disturbed<\/strong><br \/>\nNotwithstanding figure skating\u2019s current obsession with\u00a0<em>Moulin Rouge<\/em>, some of the other pop and rock song choices at the Olympics include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RachelRoseGold1\/status\/962526424472211456\">France\u2019s Ma\u00e9-B\u00e9r\u00e9nice M\u00e9it\u00e9<\/a>\u2019s \u201cRun the World (Girls)\u201d and \u201cHalo\u201d by Beyonc\u00e9, and her teammates\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCOlympics\/status\/963984176365166592\">Vanessa James and Morgan Cipr\u00e8s<\/a>\u00a0beautifully performed to Disturbed\u2019s cover of \u201cThe Sound of Silence.\u201d South Korea\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Minoru79\/status\/962498020779544576\">Yura Min and Alexander Gamelin<\/a>\u00a0skated to a medley that included \u201cDespacito,\u201d by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, while Team USA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NBCOlympics\/status\/962862710835875841\">Adam Rippon<\/a>\u00a0slayed to \u201cO (Fly On)\u201d by Coldplay.
