{"id":77285,"date":"2018-02-21T23:55:34","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T21:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/?p=77285\/"},"modified":"2018-02-21T23:55:34","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T21:55:34","slug":"annihilation-critics-saying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/en\/news-el\/entertainment\/annihilation-critics-saying\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Annihilation&#8217;: What the Critics Are Saying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe src=\"\/\/players.brightcove.net\/769341148\/r1La1160g_default\/index.html?videoId=5679226068001\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Alex Garland\u2019s\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0has been met with some skepticism pre-release, thanks to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/heat-vision\/groups-speak-whitewashing-alex-garlands-annihilation-1084077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">concerns<\/a>\u00a0about the movie whitewashing the racially diverse cast of the source material and Paramount\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/heat-vision\/annihilation-how-a-clash-between-producers-led-a-netflix-deal-1065465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">selling<\/a>\u00a0all international rights to the movie to Netflix. The reviews are in, however, and they promise a movie that is trippy, scary and above all, well worth watching.<\/p>\n<p>Calling the movie \u201ca ferocious, feral, female-centric update of fearsome monster classics like\u00a0<em>The Thing<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Alien<\/em>,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/review\/annihilation-review-1085770\"><em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2019s own Todd McCarthy wrote<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0\u201clooks fabulously verdant as well as threatening, just the right combination for a film that wants to welcome you into its world in order to shake you up. This is one classy serving of cinematic red meat \u2014 perfectly cooked on the outside, but\u00a0saignant\u00a0inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The movie drew a number of other comparisons from critics, especially to one filmmaker in particular. \u201cUnnervingly dream-like and unknowable, with a sinister undertow at its essence,\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0is some haunting, next level shit and a thoughtful meditation on the objective and subjective qualities of self-destruction,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theplaylist.net\/annihilation-alex-garland-review-20180221\/\">wrote Rodrigo Perez at\u00a0<em>The Playlist<\/em><\/a>, adding, \u201cA visionary experience with monumental dimension, [Stanley] Kubrick, his Starchild and his lasting sci-fi legacy would be proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That name popped up again\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/annihilation-is-mind-blowing-and-the-best-sci-fi-film-in-years\">from\u00a0<em>The Daily Beast<\/em>\u2019s Nick Schager<\/a>, who wrote, \u201cA journey into an alien heart of darkness,\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0feels like it\u2019s been fashioned from gene-splicing Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s\u00a0<em>Apocalypse Now<\/em>\u00a0with John Carpenter\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Thing<\/em>\u00a0(especially in a pool-set scene of blooming monstrousness) and, also, Stanley Kubrick\u2019s\u00a0<em>2001<\/em>, the latter\u2019s spiritual influence coming to the fore during a finale of such prolonged, mesmerizing surrealism that it made my eyes burn\u2014mainly because I didn\u2019t want to blink, lest I miss a moment of its insanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/02\/annihilation-review-natalie-portman-alex-garland-1201930892\/\">Eric Kohn from\u00a0<em>Indiewire<\/em>\u00a0had a similar take<\/a>, it seemed. \u201c<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0falls neatly into a familiar tradition of survival stories stretching from Joseph Campbell to Ridley Scott, but it carries those tropes with a degree of confidence that leads to more far-reaching results in its climax, a satisfying and sometimes brilliant dose of Kubrickian storytelling that digs deep and goes visceral at the same time,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>That climax drew commentary from many critics, not least of all\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2018\/02\/21\/best-thing-about-the-not-bad-annihilation-it-doesnt-spoil-the-book\/\">Alan Scherstuhl of the\u00a0<em>Village Voice<\/em><\/a>, who was taken with the ways in which it didn\u2019t try to recreate the novel\u2019s ending, but create something unique. Saying that the movie is \u201coften inspired in its cutting and composition,\u201d he wrote, \u201cHis\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0plays like it\u2019s\u00a0about\u00a0VanderMeer\u2019s rather than any kind of substitute for it. In that sense, it\u2019s a somewhat inspired adaptation: It will wig out many of the people who turn up to see it, but it spoils nothing of the source material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2018\/02\/annihilation-review.html\"><em>Vulture<\/em>\u2019s Emily Yoshida picked up that thread<\/a>\u00a0in her review. \u201cWhereas the book comes off as more of a portrait of an ecology in psychedelic decline, Garland\u2019s film is about a personality undergoing the same kind of breakdown,\u201d she suggested. \u201cMaybe that distinction feels traditional in the sense that Hollywood movies are financed because of movie stars, not radical biomes. But by its end\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0is anything but mainstream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that depends on your definition of mainstream, something that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/screenrant.com\/annihilation-movie-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Molly Freeman of\u00a0<em>ScreenRant<\/em><\/a>\u00a0briefly touches on in her review: \u201c<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0is an intellectual, complicated sci-fi offering,\u201d she concedes, \u201cbut genre\u00a0releases in recent years\u00a0have proved\u00a0a high-concept film like Garland\u2019s can be enjoyed by many kinds of\u00a0moviegoers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, however, the majority of critics agree that\u00a0<em>Annihilation<\/em>\u00a0offers Garland a chance to create a movie that nods to the past of horror and sci-fi movies, yet offers something entirely new, as incongruous as that might seem. \u201cTonally there\u2019s a lot here but it never feels overstuffed or incongruously meshed together.
