For users in six countries, Facebook moved nearly all non-promoted posts from pages and publishers out of the main News Feed into a secondary feed, called the Explore Feed. Predictably, people didn\u2019t want to have to bounce between two feeds, and in some countries the change appears to have had other, unintended consequences. Now Facebook says it\u2019s ending the experiment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"js_ad-dynamic\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"instream-native-video instream-native-video--mobile instream-permalink\">\u00a0\u201cYou gave us our answer: People don\u2019t want two separate feeds,\u201d Facebook\u2019s News Feed head Adam Mosseri\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/03\/news-feed-fyi-ending-the-explore-feed-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote in a blog post<\/a>. \u201cIn surveys, people told us they were less satisfied with the posts they were seeing, and having two separate feeds didn\u2019t actually help them connect more with friends and family.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>The social network tested the Explore Feed in Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Slovakia, Serbia, Guatemala, and Cambodia.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the obvious annoyance of having to toggle between disjointed feeds, relegating posts from brands and news sources to a seemingly lesser location apparently further contributed to Facebook\u2019s misinformation problem. According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/14\/technology\/facebook-news-feed-changes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0article from January<\/a>, some users and publishers found that the Explore Feed test ended up \u201camplifying the impact of fabricated and sensational stories\u201d in some countries. In areas where the feature was being tested, official accounts and non-governmental media sites were downgraded to the secondary feed unless they paid to promote their content in the main feed. This meant that users depended primarily on the credibility of the content shared by their friends and family.<\/p>\n<div class=\"js_ad-mobile-dynamic js_ad-dynamic ad-mobile-dynamic\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cPeople usually don\u2019t share boring news with boring facts,\u201d Filip Struharik, the social media editor of Slovakian news site Denn\u00edk N, told the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>. The Slovakian site reportedly experienced a 30 percent decrease in user engagement on Facebook after Facebook implemented the Explore Feed.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Facebook is reverting back to a singular feed, but the company is still doubling down on its effort to prioritize \u201cmeaningful\u201d interactions over other types of posts. \u201cWe concluded that Explore isn\u2019t an effective way for people to discover new content on Facebook,\u201d Mosseri wrote. \u201cWe think our recent changes to News Feed that prioritize meaningful social interactions better address the feedback we heard from people who said they want to see more from friends and family.\u201d But as we saw with the Explore Feed\u2019s failure, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/wistful-mark-zuckerberg-wants-to-bring-back-the-old-fac-1822020854#_ga=2.74488155.815079813.1519935821-1327286867.1501514582\" rel=\"nofollow\">meaningful<\/a>\u201d is not synonymous with credible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/video\/3485496?utm_medium=sharefromsite&amp;utm_source=Gizmodo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watch video<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source:\u00a0 gizmodo.com<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out, one of Facebook\u2019s biggest News Feed experiments last year only made the service worse.
