Spotify\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0today the launch of a new tool called\u00a0Line-In<\/a>\u00a0that will allow its community members to offer input about the music data it has on file, like genre, mood, explicitness and more. The goal is to leverage the wisdom of the crowds in correcting and expanding Spotify\u2019s data over time, which could give it a competitive advantage against rival services like Apple or Pandora, for example.<\/p>\n

Notes Spotify in its FAQ, by confirming the data describing music, the company will be able to improve the experiences of the users and artists on its service. Users will also benefit from the feature because they\u2019ll be able to learn more about the music than what\u2019s available in the app today, thanks to community participation.<\/p>\n

The tool is currently only available to desktop users, and is accessible by clicking on the three dots next to Artist, Album or Song, then choosing \u201cSuggest an Edit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Users can offer edits on a variety of data categories, including\u00a0explicitness, genre, aliases, languages, mood, tags, artist roles and external URLs. However, they won\u2019t be able to correct song or album titles, even if they\u2019re wrong or contain \u201cextra messy information,\u201d Spotify says. Instead, the content partners have to fix this sort of metadata. But the company notes it\u2019s building an interface to gather this feedback as well, so it can be sent \u201cup the chain\u201d to the label or artist to fix.<\/p>\n

In addition to correcting erroneous information, Spotify users also can confirm the data already on file is correct.<\/p>\n

Beyond contributing data by searching for artists from the Line-In homepage, users also can opt to take quizzes to share their knowledge or track mood or explicitness, while contributing data. The surveys are presented as multiple choice, with \u201cnone of the above\u201d as the default selection and an option to skip questions you don\u2019t know. (You don\u2019t know if you get the questions \u201cright\u201d at the end, or how your answers compare to others\u2019.)<\/p>\n

The company also is crowdsourcing for information on whether or not an album has been added to the wrong artist\u2019s page, or when albums from different artists have been mixed together on a single page. To fix this, you\u2019ll go to the \u201cArtist Roles\u201d section on the album page and correct the \u201cmain artist\u201d by marking an \u201cX\u201d next to the wrong item, and clicking \u201cAdd Credit\u201d to add anyone who\u2019s missing.<\/p>\n

Broadly, Line-In will appeal more so to hardcore music fans \u2014 particularly fans of a given artist or genre who want to ensure the data is accurate and complete.<\/p>\n

The tool itself was publicly announced today, but\u00a0had been in testing since last fall<\/a>. Spotify says more features will come to Line-In over time.<\/p>\n

Though there are some comparisons to a service like Wikipedia, which also relies on user contributions from editors, Spotify says Line-In is not a wiki, but rather a crowdsourced editing tool. It\u2019s a nuanced difference, perhaps, but it doesn\u2019t appear that a single user\u2019s input would change the metadata on its own.<\/p>\n

The launch of the tool comes ahead of\u00a0Spotify\u2019s IPO<\/a>,\u00a0set for April 2nd<\/a>.<\/p>\n
