After all, this is one of the most storied film franchises in movie history; a premium brand with few equals. Moreover, it\u2019s not an ideal start for a film with a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/features\/solo-a-star-wars-story-directors-reshoots-ron-howard-1202817841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">budget over $250 million,<\/a>\u00a0and it\u2019s a launch that potentially means that this installment could fall short of previous films in the series, most of which end their runs with over $1 billion globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the bar is set this high, there\u2019s a lot of Chicken Little [syndrome] going on,\u201d box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian said of reports already labeling the newest \u201c<a id=\"related_article_link_star-wars\" href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/solo-a-star-wars-story-darth-maul-jonathan-lawrence-kasdan-1202822960\/\" data-tag=\"star-wars\">Star Wars<\/a>\u201d installment as a flop. \u201cThat\u2019s not the case, but when you have a franchise that\u2019s been this successful, any misstep becomes a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Analysts are pointing to timing for \u201cSolo\u2019s\u201d soft debut. Instead of sticking to the standard plan of rolling out a new \u201cStar Wars\u201d film every year, Disney and Lucasfilm opened \u201cSolo\u201d a mere five and a half months after \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi.\u201d The second installment in the sequel trilogy launched in December of 2017 and ended its impressive run this April with $1.3 billion worldwide, including $620 million in North America.\u00a0A year earlier, \u201cRogue One: A Star Wars Story\u201d premiered with $155 million and went on to make $532 million domestically and $1 billion globally.<\/p>\n<article class=\"c-content\">\u201cOversaturation is always a concern,\u201d box office analyst Jeff Bock said.\u00a0\u201cYou can\u2019t make an inferior \u2018Star Wars\u2019 film. Audiences will call it out. It makes them hesitant to buy a ticket to the next film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Han Solo standalone film certainly had a bumpy gestation. After\u00a0producer Kathleen Kennedy fired directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and replaced them with Ron Howard, almost 85% of the movie was reshot and\u00a0Michael K. Williams\u2019 role was recast with Paul Bettany due to scheduling conflicts. It\u2019s hard to say how much behind-the-scenes turmoil impacts moviegoing, Dergarabedian said, though it\u2019s definitely something \u201cStar Wars\u201d aficionados were aware of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have fans that are that religiously enthusiastic about the \u2018Star Wars\u2019 property, any change can cause a shift in the force,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018Star Wars\u2019 fans have a high standard of what they expect. The type of things that most audiences wouldn\u2019t really care that much about, \u2018Star Wars\u2019 fans care about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the bar for success set in the billions of dollars, it was only a matter of time until a new \u201cStar Wars\u201d movie stumbled. But perhaps \u201cSolo\u2019s\u201d opening weekend gross doesn\u2019t mean disaster for Lucasfilm \u2014 instead it could be an opportunity to look at smaller movies for this cash-flush franchise.<\/p>\n<p>It may be time to start reframing the anthology movies not as lucrative standalone flicks for legacy characters (a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/star-wars-boba-fett-movie-1202821798\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boba Fett adventure is also in the works<\/a>), but as rare opportunities to break out of their own cumbersome canon. However, Lucasfilm may not be ready to deviate too far from the \u201cStar Wars\u201d look and feel to keep directors like Lord and Miller employed.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cStar Wars\u201d films of the past five years have attracted notable directors, including\u00a0J.J. Abrams (\u201cThe Force Awakens,\u201d \u201cEpisode IX\u201d), Gareth Edwards (\u201cRogue One\u201d), Rian Johnson (\u201cThe Last Jedi), and Ron Howard (\u201cSolo\u201d). But they\u2019ve also battled a perception of being filmmaker-unfriendly. Kennedy\u2019s team brought in Tony Gilroy to oversee reshoots on \u201cRogue One\u201d and Lord and Miller reportedly ran afoul of management by employing too much of an improvisational spin on the material. \u201cSolo\u201d may be a sign that audiences want something fresh, but that can only happen with buy-in from the top.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s become obvious there\u2019s problems within Lucasfilm,\u201d Bock said. \u201cYou don\u2019t see that in a lot of big name franchises. There is something that\u2019s not working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cStar Wars\u201d brain trust may want to borrow a page from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These superhero films have been hailed for embracing a range of genres \u2014 from spy thriller (\u201cCaptain America: The Winter Soldier\u201d) to comedy (\u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d) to sci-fi (\u201cDoctor Strange\u201d) without missing a beat. That\u2019s allowed the studio to release multiple films a year. That\u2019s also why \u201cAvengers: Infinity Wars\u201d could premiere just a few short months after \u201cBlack Panther\u201d with no sense of MCU fatigue. Both earned over $1 billion globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much possibility within the \u2018Star Wars\u2019 franchise,\u201d Bock said. \u201cIt seems to me [Disney and Lucasfilm] are cutting their own hand off in terms of creativity. They\u2019re playing it much too safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It may be time to move beyond Luke, Leia, and Han Solo. Future \u201cStar Wars\u201d films that exist separate from the originally trilogy sage might allow bold casting choices and could attract a variety of directors and writers who could stretch narrative possibilities and take chances (<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/film\/news\/star-wars-han-solo-kathleen-kennedy-director-fired-1202473919\/\">though maybe not too many chances<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole point is to mix it up. The anthology opened up a nice opportunity to bend the rules a bit,\u201d Dergarabedian said.\u00a0\u201cIf every movie looked the same and it didn\u2019t do well, we would say it\u2019s because it\u2019s the same old thing. They would be accused of being cookie cutter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that could be something audiences see with the upcoming series from \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/film\/news\/star-wars-game-of-thrones-new-films-david-benioff-db-weiss-1202689489\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss<\/a>, as well as the separate\u00a0Rian Johnson-helmed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/biz\/news\/star-wars-tv-series-disney-streaming-service-1202611408\/\">saga that was announced last year<\/a>. Neither is expected to deal with the Skywalker family saga, and that presents an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Next time instead of rebooting Han Solo with a younger actor, Disney might try creating some new iconic characters.
