Because the line sums up perfectly what\u2019s been happening with \u201cAvengers: Infinity War<\/a>\u201d this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The latest Marvel installment has earned around $2 billion at the box office and ecstatic praise from its hordes of fans\u00a0\u2015 all serving as an incentive for the aforementioned haters. But there\u2019s one thing the critics keep coming back to, and it has to do with the movie\u2019s ending.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s ending wiped out half the residents of the universe \u2015 including a lot of your favorite superheroes like Spider-Man, most of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Black Panther \u2015 but many of those characters have sequels that are on the way.<\/p>\n

I loved \u201cInfinity War.\u201d I loved it so much I want to marry it. I too, however, can be counted among the ending-aggrieved haters; I previously wrote about how the Marvel masterminds basically lied to us about the permanency of the film\u2019s deaths.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeath is death,\u201d \u201cInfinity War\u201d writer Stephen McFeely told me in an interview before the premiere. \u201cIf we say goodbye to some characters, we will say it permanently,\u201d he added later.<\/p>\n

Uh, \u201cSpider-Man 2,\u201d \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3\u201d and \u201cBlack Panther 2\u201d beg to differ, dude. Plus, some of the actors whose characters supposedly died have already confirmed that they\u2019re coming back in \u201cAvengers 4\u201d and other sequel movies.<\/p>\n

My colleague Matt Jacobs laid out his beef with the deaths in an essay titled \u201cThe End Of \u2018Avengers: Infinity War\u2019 Is What Happens When Money Writes Movies\u201d:<\/p>\n

Marvel Studios is a business first (owned by Disney) and a story factory second. And because it\u2019s a business, we know how many movies certain actors are contracted for and which ones have sequels already in development. That includes some whose characters supposedly went bye-bye.<\/p>\n

\n

We said our piece, and now the \u201cInfinity War\u201d directors, Joe and Anthony Russo,\u00a0are responding.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I asked the Russo brothers for their thoughts on the criticism \u2015 and about the fact that we\u2019ll see dead characters coming back in sequels \u2015 but they stuck to their guns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHere\u2019s the thing, I think it\u2019s important to remember anything is possible in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe],\u201d Anthony said. \u201cJust because there\u2019s a sequel on the books doesn\u2019t mean … people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU.\u00a0That doesn\u2019t necessarily have to be the case. There\u2019s a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go from here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Joe agreed, reiterating the idea that the movies don\u2019t need to happen in chronological order.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThere\u2019s four years between\u00a0\u2018Guardians 2\u2019 and \u2018Infinity War.\u2019 That\u2019s a long time, and a lot of\u00a0\u2018Guardians\u2019 stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don\u2019t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

OK, some of what the directors said is going to come true sooner rather than later. Marvel\u2019s next two films, \u201cAnt-Man and the Wasp\u201d and \u201cCaptain Marvel,\u201d both take place before the \u201cInfinity War\u201d timeline. But according to some theories<\/a>, that\u2019s so both of those movies can establish ground rules for the Quantum Realm dimension \u2015 which could bring back dead characters in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If this were the D.C. universe, we could have used Wonder Woman\u2019s Lasso of Truth on the Russos. But also, if it were D.C., Captain America and Iron Man would\u2019ve probably stopped fighting in \u201cCaptain America: Civil War<\/a>\u201d because their moms have the same name<\/a>. So we might just be better off waiting.<\/p>\n
