But as part of that cover story, the first look at\u00a0<strong>Yahya Abdul-Mateen II<\/strong>\u00a0as the villainous Black Manta has been revealed. In the film, Black Manta is a high-seas pirate and mercenary named David Kane, which puts a spin on the character\u2019s comics origin story.<\/p>\n<p>Director\u00a0<strong>James Wan<\/strong>\u00a0isn\u2019t ready to reveal too much about Black Manta, but he offered\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/2018\/06\/14\/aquaman-black-manta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a tantalizing tease<\/a>\u00a0while also confirming that Black Manta is not the main antagonist of\u00a0<em>Aquaman<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe\u2019s part mercenary but full-time pirate who in his suit will look like some crazy alien from outer space\u2026 Black Manta is a really interesting character who is somehow factored into this story but our main story is about Jason and Patrick.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jason and Patrick meaning\u00a0<strong>Jason Momoa<\/strong>\u2019s Aquaman and\u00a0<strong>Patrick Wilson<\/strong>\u2019s King Orm, who is Aquaman\u2019s half brother and may or may not have different ideas about what it means to rule Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Manta helmet looks quite nifty, however, and I like how Wan has found a grounded way for the character to make sense. But don\u2019t go expecting some full-blown\u00a0<strong><em>Batman v Superman<\/em><\/strong>-style grit.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/2018\/06\/14\/ew-aquaman-cover-jason-momoa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the cover story<\/a>, executive producer\u00a0<strong>Peter Safran<\/strong>\u00a0says to expect plenty of humor from the film:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRarely has a superhero character been married to the real-life actor as much as Aquaman and Jason Momoa. He\u2019s authentically from two worlds, he\u2019s this real physical specimen, he\u2019s got this humor which he\u2019s never been allowed to play before \u2014 in every regard he is Aquaman.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It sounds like we may get a\u00a0<strong><em>Thor: Ragnarok<\/em><\/strong>-style retcon of the character after his entrance in\u00a0<strong><em>Justice League<\/em><\/strong>, and indeed Wan reiterates in the cover story that\u00a0<em>Aquaman<\/em>\u00a0feels very distinct from the previous DCEU films:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe water world my movie takes place in is so separate and so far apart from previous DC movies it\u2019s like I\u2019m making my own sci-fi fantasy film. This is a whole new underwater world nobody has seen before in live action.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Distancing\u00a0<em>Aquaman<\/em>\u00a0from the DCEU that\u2019s come before was inveitable, as Warner Bros. and those involved don\u2019t want the\u00a0<em>Justice League<\/em>\u00a0stink\u00a0to stick around on\u00a0their upcoming slate. But it\u2019ll be interesting to see just how distinct\u00a0<em>Aquaman<\/em>\u00a0is, and if it signals a new direction for the DCEU in the vein of last year\u2019s hit\u00a0<strong><em>Wonder Woman<\/em><\/strong>.
