{"id":84346,"date":"2018-06-21T23:05:07","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T20:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/?p=84346\/"},"modified":"2018-06-21T23:05:07","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T20:05:07","slug":"oscars-halfway-point-black-panther-leads-pack-heavy-hitters-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ngradio.gr\/en\/news-el\/entertainment\/oscars-halfway-point-black-panther-leads-pack-heavy-hitters-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscars at Halfway Point: \u2018Black Panther\u2019 Leads the Pack, With Heavy-Hitters Coming Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the 2018 awards race hits the halfway mark, there is one solid best-picture bet so far: \u201c<a id=\"auto-tag_black-panther\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/black-panther\/\" data-tag=\"black-panther\">Black Panther<\/a>.\u201d As usual, the year is bottom-heavy and impartial execs who have seen the upcoming films say it could be one of the most fun awards years in memory.<\/p>\n<p>Disney-Marvel\u2019s \u201c<a id=\"related_article_link_black-panther\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2018\/tv\/news\/2018-mtv-movie-tv-awards-tiffany-haddish-1202850587\/\" data-tag=\"black-panther\">Black Panther<\/a>,\u201d directed by Ryan Coogler, has enough originality and goodwill to overcome any \u201csuperhero\u201d resistance from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters. The film\u2019s artists (above and below the line) deserve Oscar attention \u2014 and TV viewers would love the adrenaline jolt to the Oscarcast.<\/p>\n<p>The July-December period offers an adventurous lineup. That includes new works from recent Oscar winners: the Damien Chazelle-directed \u201c<a id=\"auto-tag_first-man\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/first-man\/\" data-tag=\"first-man\">First Man<\/a>\u201d about Neil Armstrong (Universal),\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_alfonso-cuaron\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/alfonso-cuaron\/\" data-tag=\"alfonso-cuaron\">Alfonso Cuaron<\/a>\u2019s 1970s-set \u201cRoma\u201d (Netflix), Barry Jenkins\u2019 \u201cIf Beale Street Could Talk\u201d (from James Baldwin\u2019s book, via Annapurna), \u201cBackseat\u201d (Adam McKay\u2019s Dick Cheney movie with Christian Bale, also Annapurna); and Steve McQueen\u2019s \u201cWidows\u201d starring Viola Davis (Fox).<\/p>\n<p>Also getting enthusiasm are Paul Greengrass\u2019 look at modern terrorism in \u201cNorway\u201d (Netflix) and Warner Bros.\u2019 \u201cA Star Is Born\u201d (starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, in case you hadn\u2019t heard).<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood is challenging the traditional notion of \u201cOscar bait,\u201d taking more chances. Witness the eclectic range in bios, including films about Scotland\u2019s Robert the Bruce, Sen. Gary Hart, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Oscar Wilde, and Queen Anne.<\/p>\n<p>The year is also \u201cBoy\u201d crazy, with Amazon\u2019s \u201cBeautiful Boy\u201d (director Felix Van Groeningen; Timothee Chalamet, Steve Carell); \u201cBoy Erased\u201d (Joel Edgerton; with Russell Crowe, Lucas Hedges, Focus Features); and \u201cWhite Boy Rick\u201d (Yann Demange; Matthew McConaughey, Bruce Dern; Sony TriStar). That\u2019s OK. Audiences last year had \u201cWonder,\u201d \u201cWonder Woman,\u201d \u201cWonderstruck,\u201d and \u201cWonder Wheel,\u201d but everyone survived.<\/p>\n<p>Plan B (Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Brad Pitt) has three year-end films (\u201cBackseat,\u201d \u201cBeale Street,\u201d and \u201cBeautiful Boy\u201d) and a possible fourth (\u201cAd Astra\u201d). Given their track record with \u201c12 Years a Slave\u201d and \u201cMoonlight,\u201d these are films to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<p>This could also be the year that Hollywood finally embraces Netflix. The industry is always wary of innovations (talkies, TV, videocassettes, et al.) so Netflix\u2019s business plan seemed unsettling. But the lineup is especially strong.<\/p>\n<p>Industry conversations about diversity\/inclusion may finally be paying off. Aside from a formidable group of black directors (Coogler, Jenkins, McQueen, and Spike Lee, with \u201cBlacKkKlansman\u201d), there is Cuaron representing Latino-Hispanics; it\u2019s a step forward.<\/p>\n<p>It could be a good year for women. Aviron Pictures (from execs David Dinerstein, William Sadleir, et al.) has \u201cA Private War,\u201d with Rosamund Pike as war correspondent Marie Colvin, directed by Matthew Heineman. Sony Pictures Classics has \u201cCapernaum,\u201d Jury Prize winner at Cannes directed and co-written by Nadine Labaki. In addition, Bleecker Street has two female-directed movies \u2014 Debra Granik\u2019s \u201cLeave No Trace\u201d and Elizabeth Chomko\u2019s \u201cWhat They Had\u201d \u2014 plus female-centric movies like \u201cCollette,\u201d with Keira Knightley and director Wash Westmoreland, and recent opener \u201cDisobedience\u201d starring the two Rachels, Weisz and McAdams.\u00a0Also directed by women: Josie Rourke\u2019s \u201cMary Queen of Scots\u201d (Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan, Focus); and Mimi Leder\u2019s \u201cOn the Basis of Sex\u201d (Ginsburg bio starring Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, also Focus).<\/p>\n<p>Still under-represented are Asian-Americans, Muslims, disabled people, plus many others. But one lives in hope.<\/p>\n<p>Two very different period pieces offer timely tales, with \u201cOutlaw King,\u201d Netflix\u2019s story of 14th century Scotland from David Mackenzie (\u201cHell or High Water\u201d); and Sony TriStar\u2019s \u201cThe Front Runner\u201d from Jason Reitman starring Hugh Jackman as Gary Hart.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from \u201cPanther,\u201d the January-June commercial launches offered some terrific work worth considering in various Oscar categories, such as Paul Schrader\u2019s \u201cFirst Reformed\u201d (A24), Hugh Grant in \u201cPaddington 2\u201d (WB), Toni Collette in \u201cHereditary\u201d (A24), and Fox Searchlight\u2019s Wes Anderson film \u201cIsle of Dogs,\u201d to name a few. For more notable work during the first six months, see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p2WgDE-1joYbp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accompanying story<\/a>\u00a0by Jenelle Riley and Kris Tapley.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, the season moves into high gear with the fall film fests (Venice-Telluride-Toronto). First disclaimer: When names are mentioned here, it\u2019s to jog readers\u2019 memory, not as a prediction of who has the best Oscar chances. Second disclaimer: This is an overview of what\u2019s out there. Every year, the majority of these films don\u2019t cut it Oscar-wise, for whatever reason. But if even a fraction of films pay off, it looks like a good year.<\/p>\n<p>Other upcoming films:<\/p>\n<p><strong>July:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cSorry to Bother You\u201d (director, Boots Riley; Annapurna)<\/p>\n<p><strong>August:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nLee\u2019s \u201cBlacKkKlansman\u201d (Focus); \u201cThe Little Stranger\u201d (director Lenny Abrahamson, written by Lucinda Coxon, with Domhnall Gleeson; Focus); \u201cThe Wife\u201d (Bjorn Runge; stars Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce; Sony Classics)<\/p>\n<p><strong>September:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cThe Old Man and the Gun\u201d (David Lowery; Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek; Searchlight); \u201cThe Sisters Brothers\u201d (d. Jacques Audiard; Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix; Annapurna); \u201cLife Itself\u201d (Dan Fogelman; Olivia Cooke; Amazon).<\/p>\n<p><strong>October:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cCan You Ever Forgive Me\u201d (Marielle Heller; Melissa McCarthy; Searchlight); \u201cThe Happy Prince\u201d (written-directed by Rupert Everett, who stars as Oscar Wilde; Sony Pictures Classics); \u201cThe Hate You Give\u201d (George Tillman Jr.; Amandla Stenberg; Fox)<\/p>\n<p><strong>November:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d (Bryan Singer; Rami Malek; Fox); \u201cThe Favourite\u201d (Yorgos Lanthimos; Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman; Searchlight); \u201cPeterloo\u201d (Mike Leigh; Rory Kinnear; Amazon); \u201cSuspiria\u201d (Luca Guadagnino; Dakota Johnson; Amazon); \u201cThe Women of Marwen\u201d (Robert Zemeckis; Steve Carell; Universal).<\/p>\n<p><strong>December:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cCold War\u201d (Joanna Kulig; Pawel Pawlikowski; Amazon); \u201cMary Poppins Returns\u201d (Rob Marshall; Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep; Disney).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Undated:<\/strong><br \/>\nMaybe 2019, but possible for 2018: \u201cAd Astra\u201d (James Gray; Brad Pitt; Fox New Regency); \u201cAt Eternity\u2019s Gate\u201d (Julian Schnabel; Willem Dafoe as Van Gogh; CBS Films).<\/p>\n<p>Shifted to 2019: \u201cWhere\u2019d You Go Bernadette\u201d (Richard Linklater, Cate Blanchett; Annapurna)<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 fests offered interesting films that may seem like Oscar question marks, but all they need are a few year-end critics\u2019 honors and they\u2019re players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sundance:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cBlaze\u201d (director Ethan Hawke; stars Ben Dickey; Sundance Selects); \u201cCome Sunday\u201d (Joshua Marston; Chiwetel Ejiofor, Netflix); \u201cEighth Grade\u201d (Bo Burnham; Elsie Fisher; A24); \u201cJuliet, Naked\u201d (Jesse Peretz; Chris O\u2019Dowd, Rose Byrne, Lionsgate\/Roadside Attractions); \u201cMonsters and Men\u201d (Reinaldo Marcus Green; Neon); \u201cSearching\u201d (Aneesh Chaganty; John Cho; Screen Gems)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cannes:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cGirl\u201d (Belgium\u2019s Lukas Dhont; Netflix); \u201cArctic\u201d (Joe Penna; Mads Mikkelsen; Bleecker Street); Hirokazu Kore-eda\u2019s \u201cShoplifters\u201d Palme d\u2019Or winner, Magnolia Films.<\/p>\n<p>This is also a powerhouse years for documentaries, with Neon\u2019s \u201cThree Identical Strangers,\u201d Magnolia Pictures\u2019 \u201cRBG,\u201d Roadside Attractions\u2019 \u201cWhitney,\u201d Focus\u2019 \u201cWon\u2019t You Be My Neighbor,\u201d Kimberly Reed\u2019s \u201cDark Money\u201d and Sony Classics\u2019 \u201cAmerican Chaos,\u201d plus many more. They will be covered more in a future column, but, fingers crossed, could this be the year a docu finally gets a best picture nomination?
