We\u2019ve reached the halfway point of 2018, believe it or not, which can only mean one thing: It\u2019s time to check in on the Oscar race! I know, I know\u2014it\u2019s super early. But given how significantly the Academy has changed over the last few years, and the kinds of contenders we\u2019ve seen arise in the major categories, a film doesn\u2019t necessarily\u00a0have<\/em>\u00a0to be released between September and December to be considered a major Oscar contender. It certainly helps, and it\u2019s true that the large majority of the big awards contenders won\u2019t be released until the fall, but films like\u00a0Get Out<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Dunkirk<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Mad Max: Fury Road<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Hell or High Water<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are proof positive that it\u2019s foolish to discount the first eight months of the year.<\/p>\n

So as we enter July, have we seen any major Oscar contenders yet? Well, one of the biggest question marks at this point continues to be\u00a0Black Panther<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. With\u00a0Logan<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s screenplay nomination last year, the superhero genre appears to be inching closer to finally scoring a Best Picture nod, and Marvel Studios\u2019 critically acclaimed February release could be the film that breaks that invisible barrier that\u00a0The Dark Knight<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0came so close to cracking a decade ago.<\/p>\n

Indeed, after the massive success of\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>\u2019s release, Disney quietly started putting the pieces in place for a longterm Oscar campaign, and we\u2019ll see just how seriously they are as we get closer to the end of the year. The film is likely a shoo-in for a nomination (at least) for Best Costume Design, but I genuinely think a Best Picture nomination is quite possible, along with the requisite technical categories (Sound, VFX, Makeup & Hairstyling) and maybe even a Best Supporting Actor nomination for\u00a0Michael B. Jordan<\/strong>\u00a0or a Best Director nod for\u00a0Ryan Coogler<\/strong>. Again, it depends on how successful (and aggressive) Disney\u2019s Oscar campaign is, and how crowded the field will be this year, but at least one \u201caction\u201d movie has made it into the Best Picture field every year for the last three years in a row.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t necessarily foresee\u00a0Deadpool 2<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0having the same success on the awards circuit that\u00a0Deadpool<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0did\u2014critical reaction was a bit more muted in its praise this time around\u2014but in terms of blockbusters,\u00a0Ready Player One<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0could be below-the-line players in the Visual Effects and Sound categories.<\/p>\n

Aside from blockbusters, there are two other genre films that could make a splash later this year: the horror hits\u00a0A Quiet Place<\/em><\/strong><\/a>and\u00a0Hereditary<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0A Quiet Place<\/em>\u00a0was a critical and commercial smash when it was released in April, with many praising director\/co-writer\/star\u00a0John Krasinski<\/strong>\u2019s emotionally grounded take on the material.\u00a0I wrote about how the film\u00a0should<\/em>\u00a0be considered<\/a>\u00a0Best Picture material, but its chances in the top category will no doubt depend on how crowded the field is later this year. A near-certainty, however, are nominations for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, as sound is vital to the overall effect of the horror drama.<\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s A24\u2019s\u00a0Hereditary<\/em>, which has proved somewhat divisive for audiences, but which garnered Oscar buzz as far back as Sundance in January for\u00a0Toni Collette<\/strong>\u2019s tour de force performance. Indeed, A24 should put some major backing behind getting Collette a Best Actress nomination here, because the performance has the goods and I could absolutely see her cracking the field. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for another horror film,\u00a0The Sixth Sense<\/em><\/strong>, so it\u2019s not exactly unprecedented, and\u00a0Daniel Kaluuya<\/strong>\u00a0scored a Best Actor nod last year for\u00a0Get Out<\/em><\/strong>. As for the film itself, it may be a bit too \u201cfeel-bad\u201d to crack the Best Picture field, but I would certainly not be angry at a nomination for\u00a0Ari Aster<\/strong>\u2019s meticulous screenplay or\u00a0Grace Yun<\/strong>\u2019s gorgeous production design.<\/p>\n

There are also a number of indies and dramas that could crack the awards race if their studios play their cards right.\u00a0Lynne Ramsey<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0You Were Never Really Here<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is one of the best-reviewed films of the year, with plenty heaping praise on\u00a0Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong>\u2019s performance. There\u2019s also\u00a0Ethan Hawke<\/strong>\u2019s terrific turn in\u00a0Paul Schrader<\/strong>\u2019s critically acclaimed\u00a0First Reformed<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and recent Academy invitee\u00a0Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0The Rider<\/em><\/strong>, which has garnered immense acclaim on the arthouse circuit.<\/p>\n

And of course in the Best Animated Feature category,\u00a0Wes Anderson<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Isle of Dogs<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is probably a shoo-in for a nomination after his 2009 animated effort\u00a0Fantastic Mr. Fox<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0also earned a Best Animated Feature nod, and Pixar\u2019s box office juggernaut\u00a0Incredibles 2<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will almost certainly earn a nomination as well. The Best Documentary Feature race is also off and running with the critically acclaimed\u00a0RBG<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Won\u2019t You Be My Neighbor?<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, both of which have been massive box office hits. Although the Documentary arm of the Academy is notoriously fickle when it comes to actually nominating the films that dominate the circuit leading up to the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Obviously it\u2019s still early, and there are plenty of potentially hefty contenders on the horizon for the fall like\u00a0First Man<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0A Star Is Born<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0Widows<\/em><\/strong>, but as we saw with this year\u2019s new invitees, the Academy is getting younger and more diverse, which could absolutely result in a more varied lineup of films that get nominated. We\u2019ll have a better idea of the chances of films like\u00a0Black Panther<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Hereditary<\/em>\u00a0in a few months, but for now, it\u2019s wise to keep an eye on them as potential contenders.<\/p>\n
