Sony picked up the\u00a0<em>Sicario\u00a0<\/em>sequel and (the terrific)\u00a0<em>Only t<\/em><em>he Brave\u00a0<\/em>after Lionsgate decided not to release them domestically. Lionsgate will still distribute\u00a0<em>Sicario 2<\/em>\u00a0in some overseas territories, but I digress. The relative success of\u00a0<em>Day of the Soldado\u00a0<\/em>is a win for Sony Entertainment in two specific if admittedly contradictory\u00a0ways. The &#8220;<em>First Blood<\/em>-to-<em>Rambo: First Blood Part II<\/em>&#8221; sequel\u00a0potentially turns\u00a0<em>Sicario\u00a0<\/em>into a genuine franchise at a bargain-basement price, while also giving the studio hope for the rest of its upcoming adult-skewing thrillers.<\/p>\n<p>First, that Black Label Media has released two\u00a0<em>Sicario\u00a0<\/em>movies that have both (barring a post-debut crash for the sequel) been relative hits means that Sony may have acquired a small-scale franchise. While the official story is that Taylor Sheridan may write one more story about the adventures of Benicio del Toro\u2019s morally unpredictable lawyer-turned-vigilante Alejandro and Josh Brolin\u2019s reckless DOJ agent Matt Graver, there is no law saying that this series must be a trilogy. There is no reason, presuming the grosses justify it, to make this into a \u201cWhat god-awful things will Matt and Alejandro do to fight America\u2019s War on Drugs today?\u201d franchise.<\/p>\n<p>That will make the \u201cno Emily Blunt\u201d thing make more sense in the broader picture. If\u00a0<em>Sicario<\/em>\u00a0is a somewhat episodic series of adventures featuring the vigilante and the soldier, then Blunt\u2019s disillusioned FBI agent will merely join Isabella Moner\u2019s kidnapped-daughter-of-a-drug-kingpin as (no spoilers) this episode\u2019s highlighted collateral damage as Matt and Alejandro break the rules to keep white Americans safe from scary brown people and their scary drugs. Sure, they can bring any of the previous two films\u2019 surviving characters back for the third go-around, or they can continue to make this series a bunch of stand-alone action thrillers featuring Del Toro and Brolin as Trumpian answer to John Rambo or Jack Ryan.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-0-inread\"><\/div>\n<p>The MCU and the\u00a0<em>Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>franchise got Hollywood addicted to explicitly connected long-term cinematic storytelling. We should remember that many of the biggest franchises (<em>Die Hard<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Lethal Weapon<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Indiana Jones<\/em>, the 007 films) were \u201cepisode of the week\u201d action flicks. A three-part, beginning\/middle\/end trilogy like\u00a0<em>Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>was the exception rather than the rule. We\u2019ve had few successful post-MCU cinematic universes, and stand-alone action franchises like\u00a0<em>Transformers\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Mission: Impossible<\/em>have been as successful as the comic book\/fantasy franchises. An open-ended structure means that\u00a0<em>Sicario\u00a0<\/em>can live forever. This means an Emily Blunt vehicle will have paved the way for a testosterone-powered he-man action series, but\u00a0even a franchise is a franchise.<\/p>\n<p>Second, even if\u00a0<em>Sicario 2\u00a0<\/em>is not the beginning of a franchise, it is an example of Sony successfully selling a star-driven, R-rated, adult-skewing action movie in the middle of the summer. It is essentially the third time they have pulled this off in late June, following Blake Lively\u2019s (PG-13)\u00a0<em>The Shallows\u00a0<\/em>in 2016 and Edgar Wright\u2019s acclaimed\u00a0<em>Baby Driver\u00a0<\/em>in 2017. While\u00a0<em>Ghostbusters\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Passengers\u00a0<\/em>got most of the ink, Sony had a solid run of small movies (<em>Don\u2019t Breathe<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Shallows<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Money Monster<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Sausage Party<\/em>) in the heart of a summer filled with awful tentpoles. More importantly,\u00a0<em>Sicario 2\u00a0<\/em>is just one of several mid-to-small budget action movies on tap for the next several months.<\/p>\n<div class=\"vestpocket\"><\/div>\n<p>They\u2019ve got Denzel Washington\u2019s\u00a0<em>Equalizer 2\u00a0<\/em>set for July 20, Tom Hardy\u2019s (possibly R-rated)\u00a0<em>Venom\u00a0<\/em>on Oct. 5, Claire Foy\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Girl in the Spider\u2019s Web\u00a0<\/em>on Nov. 9 and Gina Rodriguez\u2019s\u00a0<em>Miss Bala\u00a0<\/em>remake (courtesy of director Catherine Hardwicke) in January of 2019. Now the success of\u00a0<em>Sicario 2<\/em>, a politically topical sequel to an acclaimed hit, may not mean much to the rest of the adult-skewing genre flicks, but it shows that audiences will show up for these kinds of movies alongside the tentpoles and event movies. And every time Sony scores with a\u00a0<em>Baby Driver\u00a0<\/em>or a\u00a0<em>Sicario 2<\/em>, they are that much less reliant on the latest\u00a0<em>Spider-Man\u00a0<\/em>movie or the next animated sequel.<\/p>\n<p>There is long-term value in Sony establishing itself as a studio that puts out well-reviewed, adult-skewing, star-driven thrillers alongside kid-targeted fantasies like\u00a0<em>Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Goosebumps 2<\/em>. That strategy, coupled with accidental franchises like\u00a0<em>Sicario\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Peter Rabbit\u00a0<\/em>and unexpected mega-smashes like\u00a0<em>Welcome to the Jungle<\/em>\u00a0and expected juggernauts like\u00a0<em>Men in Black 4\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Spider-Man: Far from Home<\/em>, will allow Sony to survive (and possibly thrive) in a landscape dominated by Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. I kind of wish Fox was going to get bought by Paramount or Sony, but that\u2019s for another day.
