Maybe! The DC film universe over at Warner Bros. has been struggling lately, but the future looks bright. The films coming up, including\u00a0<em>Wonder Woman 1984<\/em>, look to be dead set on bringing some light to the darkness. A new\u00a0<em>Shazam<\/em>\u00a0image has surfaced along with some new info about the upcoming film, and all signs point to a much more enjoyable DC superhero movie.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not overly familiar with\u00a0<em>Shazam<\/em>\u00a0the comic book character, but I\u2019ll admit that everything I\u2019ve seen and heard about the\u00a0<em>Shazam<\/em>\u00a0film has been promising. The project basically sounds like someone said, \u201cWhat if we remade\u00a0<em>Big<\/em>\u00a0as a superhero movie?\u201d, and that has a lot of potential. It also promises something much, much lighter for Warner Bros.\u2019 DC slate, and we could all use that right about now, especially after the exhausting\u00a0<em>Justice League<\/em>.\u00a0EW\u00a0has a new image from the film, featuring\u00a0Shazam (<strong>Zachary Levi<\/strong>) and his friend Freddy Freeman (<strong>Jack Dylan Grazer<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slashfilm.com\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/image-1-4.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-496523\" src=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/image-1-4-700x467.jpeg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/image-1-4-700x467.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/image-1-4-360x240.jpeg 360w, https:\/\/d13ezvd6yrslxm.cloudfront.net\/wp\/wp-content\/images\/image-1-4-768x512.jpeg 768w\" alt=\"shazam image\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<em>Shazam<\/em>, young\u00a0Billy Batson (<strong>Asher Angel<\/strong>) is given superpowers by a mysterious Wizard (<strong>Djimon Hounsou<\/strong>). These powers enable Billy to transform into the adult superhero Shazam (Levi).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/2018\/07\/17\/shazam-cover-ew\/\">EW<\/a>\u00a0also has a\u00a0<em>Shazam<\/em>\u00a0cover story, where Levi opens up about playing the part, while playing up the part that Shazam is one of the few superheroes who seems to\u00a0<em>like<\/em>being a superhero:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s complete wish-fulfillment \u2014 if you scour all of DC and Marvel there are very few characters that are actually stoked to be a superhero,\u201d Levi enthuses. \u201cThey\u2019re not brooding, they\u2019re not put out, like \u2018Oh dammit, I gotta save the world again!\u2019 Billy Batson is like Peter Parker, they\u2019re thrilled to have these powers and can\u2019t wait to try them out.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Producer\u00a0<strong>Peter Safran<\/strong>\u00a0adds that\u00a0<em>Shazam<\/em>\u00a0is the next step in DC\u2019s film evolution:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFrom my perspective,\u00a0<i>Shazam!<\/i>\u00a0represents the next step in the evolution of the DC brand,\u201d producer Peter Safran notes. \u201cYou had\u00a0<i>Wonder Woman<\/i>, then\u00a0<i>Aquaman\u00a0<\/i>[coming Dec. 21] is another big step, then comes\u00a0<i>Shazam!<\/i>\u00a0\u2014 all different movies, but all have a unique tone that moves away from the darkness of the prior DC movies.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"SlashFilm_300x250_In_Post_2\" align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<p>Again, all of this sounds pretty damn good. If director\u00a0<strong>David F. Sandberg<\/strong>\u00a0and writers\u00a0<strong>Henry Gayden<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Darren Lemke<\/strong>\u00a0can knock this one out of the park,\u00a0<em>Shazam<\/em>\u00a0might end up being one of the more memorable superhero films in recent memory. DC has already devoted millions upon millions of dollars on established heroes like Batman and Superman \u2013 it\u2019s time to give some lesser-known figures a try.
