You couldn\u2019t really blame the typical action-flick junkie from walking out of the theater underwhelmed. The movie\u2019s very title was a red herring. Based on Thomas Harris\u2019 novel\u00a0<em>Red Dragon<\/em>, the film received its more generic crime-movie handle to either\u2014depending on which story you want to believe\u2014mollify producer Dino De Laurentiis (who apparently wanted to steer clear of any serpent-themed titles after his 1985 epic,\u00a0<em>Year of the Dragon<\/em>, flopped) or avoid people mistaking it for a martial-arts movie.<\/p>\n<p>Audiences expected a movie called\u00a0<em>Manhunter<\/em>\u00a0to be a serial-killer thriller that conformed to the multiplex standards of the day\u2014car chases, buckets of blood, and an unimpeachable protagonist who could take down flagrantly evil bad guys with a perfect shot and a cool catchphrase. Instead, they were greeted with a hyper-stylized, meditative film where the most horrific violence happens off-screen, much of the plot is given over to studious forensics analysis, the nominal hero (William Petersen\u2019s FBI agent Will Graham) is a psychologically tormented shell of a human, and the villain (Tom Noonan\u2019s fearsome Francis Dolarhyde) elicits our sympathy as much as our revulsion. Five years after its release,\u00a0<em>Manhunter<\/em>\u2019s ignoble fate was seemingly sealed forevermore when one of its tertiary characters\u2014Hannibal Lecter\u2014became the center of another, infinitely more popular film adaptation of a Thomas Harris novel,\u00a0<em>The Silence of the Lambs<\/em>, with Anthony Hopkins\u2019 scenery- (and face-)chewing, Oscar-winning performance all but erasing Brian Cox\u2019s icier, more deadpan turn in\u00a0<em>Manhunter<\/em>\u00a0from collective memory.<\/p>\n<p>But the blockbuster success of\u00a0<em>The Silence of the Lambs<\/em>\u00a0proved to be the catalyst that mobilized a cult of\u00a0<em>Manhunter<\/em>\u00a0fans who prefer Mann\u2019s austere vision of Harris\u2019 world to Jonathan Demme\u2019s operatic grotesquerie (much like the sect of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/3319-pink-floyd\/\">Pink Floyd<\/a>\u00a0fans who\u2019ll take the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/298-syd-barrett\/\">Syd Barrett<\/a>\u00a0era over the more famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/9990-roger-waters\/\">Waters<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/12366-david-gilmour\/\">Gilmour<\/a>\u00a0iteration). Over the years,\u00a0<em>Manhunter<\/em>\u00a0has been salvaged from the 99-cent VHS bargain bin to become the sort of film that\u2019s inspired\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shoutfactory.com\/product\/manhunter-collector-s-edition?product_id=4594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deluxe DVD reissues<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/manhunter1986.com\/manhunter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obsessive fan sites<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consequenceofsound.net\/2016\/08\/manhunter-turns-30-how-michael-mann-chased-down-cinematic-dreams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thinkpiece retrospectives<\/a>.
